12 days of Christmas! Day 12: New toys and battery dangers
🔫🧸Toys:
With Christmas around the corner, and presents that are being bought, it is important to keep any toys that can cause obstructions away from your pets. Small toys like cars, marbles, or little figurines are all perfect examples of toys that can easily be picked up and eaten by your pet.
🔋Batteries:
With new toys, you will find some will require batteries, and if left unattended they can be ingested by your pet. If your pet chews on a battery it can cause burns to their mouth, oesophagus, or stomach. And if they swallow the batteries it can be dangerous by causing an obstruction. It is important that we store batteries in a safe place away from your pets.
If you are unsure if your pet has ingested a toy or battery please contact the vet immediately.

12 days of Christmas! Day 11: New Year and noise
With the new year approaching, there tends to be lots of noise when celebrating new beginnings.
Whether it’s fireworks, laughing/screaming from big groups, or poppers and confetti, it can all get a bit too much for your pet.
🐾A safe place for your pet to go to, like a separate room with their favourite bed and toy away from the noise or snuggled up on the couch with you. It is super important to make them feel safe. Some pets require further assistance with anxiety around fireworks and loud noises, if this is the case for your pet, please don’t hesitate to contact the clinic and our friendly receptionist team can book you in to see the vet.

12 days of Christmas!
Day 10: Warmer Weather - With all the rain we have had, we can still get pretty hot days
☀️With the warmer weather starting to heat up, it’s important that we keep our pets safe and cool. If pets are outside, plenty of water and shelter is needed. If pets are inside, cooling is needed (fan/aircon/windows open) and water should be accessible.
🐾When exercising your pet, it is best to walk/exercise them in the cooler parts of the day, early morning and late evenings are the best. With that being said, it is important to acknowledge where you are walking when taking your pets out for a walk. It is important to check hot concrete, sand, and synthetic grass; they can all get very hot and could cause damage to your pets' paw pads.
🐾Some breeds can suffer a bit more than others in the hotter weather, please be mindful and aware of their conditions. For example the brachycephalic dogs and cats find it harder to breathe with their shorter noses.
🐶🐱LASTLY do not leave your pets in a car or vehicle - even with windows down pets can overheat very quickly!
Please don’t hesitate to ask our friendly staff for any further information!

Day 9: Keeping your pet’s entertained on Christmas Day
We all know how busy Christmas Day can be, and keeping your pet entertained while you prepare for lunch/dinner or gathering all your gift’s can be slightly tricky.
Interactive toys like food puzzles and food dispensers can be super helpful, and are great for all kinds of pets. Common ones that you may see are:
🐾Kong’s
🐾Licking matts
🐾Snuffle matts
🐾Food puzzles

Exercise is a great way to keep you pet entertained and quiet. Taking your pet for a big walk before lunch/dinner will keep them quiet and napping

Day 7: Christmas Pet Gift's 🐕🐈‍⬛🎄
It's amazing to include your pets into the Christmas gift giving. And with that being said, it is even more important that we keep
in mind what gifts we buy our pets.

Gifts to be mindful of:
🐾 Edible gifts to check what ingredients are inside. Healthy treats are best for your pet.
🐾 Chew toys/ropes - to be mindful of size of the toys we give and if they can cause damage when ingested.
🐾 Christmas pet costumes-to be mindful of choking and ingestion hazards

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask our lovely reception staff

12 days of Christmas! Day 6: Are your pets up to date? 🐶😻
With our pets being a major part of the family, they may be there celebrating with you. Or are you traveling and your beloved pets are boarding.
🐾 Are you heading to the coast, please remember to update your pets with tick prevention. It is ideal to give prevention at least 3 days before you go. And best to check your pets thoroughly when you are at the coast for any ticks that could be hiding.
🐾 In order to board at kennels or a cattery, vaccinations are essential and need to be up to date. And with Christmas being one of our busy periods, we ask to please book in early rather than late to get your pets up to date.

12 days of Christmas! Day 5: Christmas Decorations
🐾 Decorations may not be toxic to your pet, but they can cause a lot of damage if ingested and can be harmful if chewed on. It is best to keep any lights, tinsel, ornaments, candles, and any decorations out of your pet's reach.
🐾 Advent Calendars or any stockings filled with food should be kept away from your pet. Chocolate and sweets/lollies that contain xylitol (candy canes/ mints) are toxic to your pet when ingested.

If you have any further information about decorations that could be harmful to your pet or if they have ingested any, please give us a call ☎️

12 days of Christmas! Day 4: Holiday Guests
Although the holidays may be an exciting time of the year, your pets may find the holidays a little overwhelming. Even normally well-behaved pets can experience a little anxiety when their usual routines are disrupted.
Creating a guest-free space in your home will give your pets the opportunity to escape stressful situations. Here are some tips and tricks to help your pets during these holidays:
🐾 Adding a comfortable resting spot, food, water, litter, and a few toys to a quiet room in your home when you are expecting guests will make your pet feel nice and safe. 💙
🐾 Place your pets in the room before guests arrive, but be sure to check on them periodically throughout the visit or party.
🐾 Teach your guests to be aware of both cat and dog signals that may show they are scared and need space. Dog behaviour: growling, yawning, or tail tucking. And cat behaviour: growling, tail flicking, and hissing
🐾 Remind your guests to not feed your pet any dangerous foods. 🍖🥑🍫🦴

For any other information or if the simple tips that we have suggested don’t seem to be helping don’t hesitate to give us a call ☎️
