There is currently a national shortage of tick anti-serum. This is due to a large surge in tick cases and product supply issues.
Our team is very concerned that if you bring your pet to us with tick poisoning we may not have enough anti-serum to get them out of trouble.
Please please make sure you have your pet’s tick prevention up to date. We stock a range of very effective products for a range of prices. If you have any concerns or need more information on tick prevention please, do not hesitate to call our team at Wooroolin Veterinary Services on 4164 2010 or Goomeri Veterinary Services on 4168 4064 or call in and see us.

Yes it’s SNAKE SEASON!

Over the past few weeks we have had an unusually high number of pets with snake bites.

Please make sure you take precautions and seek help immediately if your dog or cat is showing signs.

These sign or symptoms can be quite variable ranging from a complete collapse thru generalised weakness and even showing spasms. Bleeding episodes may even be seen with envenomation.

Snakes are attracted to potential food and water sources and safe, quiet places to hide.
To reduce the risk of snakes finding your backyard or property attractive, keep your grass mown, clear up any rubbish piles and clear away objects where snakes can hide. Unwanted materials, especially timber and iron, which retain the heat, will attract snakes. Make sure that stockfeed is stored securely so that snakes are not attracted by mice.

If you are walking your dog close to bushland, especially near water during the summer months, please keep your dog on a lead and avoid long grassy areas.

⚠️ WARNING ⚠️

Queensland vets are calling on all pet owners to ensure their pet's tick prevention is up to date now more than ever, as life-saving tick antiserum faces a national shortage.

The primary treatment for pets suffering from tick paralysis is the antiserum, without it the disease is likely to be fatal.

The shortage has been caused by the flood in Northern NSW, making it near impossible to collect ticks for producing the antiserum. This has then been exacerbated by one of our worst tick seasons in recent years.

Over the past three months our Animal Emergency Service hospitals have seen 710 tick paralysis cases, an increase of 27% on last year's numbers.

Our Animal Emergency Service team have been working with suppliers to secure sufficient levels of serum. However, this will depend on whether the tick season continues to worsen.

Many Queensland veterinary clinics are running short and likely to run out. The situation is only expected to become worse, with suppliers predicting another batch of the serum won't be available until early December.

There are two things you can do to keep their pet's safe from ticks:
🐾 Keep your pet's tick prevention up to date. Even the most reliable prevention won't work if it's overdue! Not sure which tick prevention is best for your pet? Speak with your vet today.
🐾 Search your pet regularly for ticks.

Paralysis ticks are life-threatening if not treated. If you do find a tick, see your vet or closest emergency vet immediately.

RAT BAIT POISONING IN DOGS & CATS
As rodent numbers increase, many people are putting down rat poison to control their populations. At our veterinary practices, we are seeing this reflected with higher numbers of patients being brought in for rat bait ingestion.

HOW DOES RAT BAIT WORK?
It contains compounds that block clotting factors in the blood from working. Animals usually have reserves that last them 2-5 days, in the meantime, the new clotting factors the body has made are faulty. This leads to uncontrolled bleeding in the abdomen, chest or under the skin, even sometimes in the brain or spinal cord. This leads to pets becoming weak from blood loss, and if this is left untreated, death may occur.

WHAT ARE THE COMMON SIGNS OF RAT BAIT POISONING?
Unfortunately, the early signs of rat bait poisoning are non-specific, but the most common ways these patients present are:
β€’ Lethargy
β€’ Pale gums
β€’ Vomiting
β€’ Weakness
β€’ Lameness
β€’ Coughing
β€’ Respiratory difficulty
β€’ Red urine

I WAS TOLD ABOUT RAT POISONS THAT ARE 'SAFE' WHEN CATS & DOGS INGEST POISONED RODENTS. IS THIS TRUE?
No rat bait is safe for mammals to ingest – this includes dogs and cats. Dogs particularly have a low lethal dose for these toxins, in fact only a quarter that of cats!
I THINK MY PET HAS INGESTED SOME RAT POISON OR EATEN A POISONED RODENT. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Please, give us a call at Goomeri Veterinary Services 24/7 on (07) 4168 4064, and we can discuss any concerns you may have, or arrange an appointment. The earlier, the better, as it gives us more options for treatment.

HOW ARE RAT BAIT POISONINGS TREATED?
Vitamin K supplementation is the main aspect of treatment, as well as supportive care. The only problem is the delay in response to treatment, so oftentimes blood or plasma transfusions are required in severe cases to save the patient.

Sam’s a Survivor!

Sam recently had a life saving surgery here at our Clinic, after eating cooked bones that caused major obstructions and damage to his bowel.

The cooked bones were unable to be digested, and formed a large obstruction in Sam’s bowel. The chunks of bone had actually bound together and formed a large unmoveable mass.

Surgery involved breaking down and removing chunks and splinters of bone that had compacted together to allow the blockage to pass.

After abdominal surgery was performed by Dr Steve, and several days of intensive care from our wonderful nursing staff, Sam was looking much happier.

We are very pleased to report that he has since made a full recovery, and we can’t wait for his next visit (hopefully social) to the clinic!

A timely reminder about feeding bones: Raw bones in Moderation! And Cooked bones NEVER :(

Yesterday we had a visit with Steve at Goomeri Veterinary Services for a vet check and dental on Chapel Road, our new gelding ("Chappie") - two of the things we do for every horse we purchase.

Why?
I always think of my vet checks like a roadworthy. It can help us pin point problems directly, and be suggestive of issues down the track. Where we pick up a weakness, we can then assess whether it is manageable with the right work / right treatment, whether we need to exclude or proceed with caution in certain areas of work. This knowledge can help us prevent further injury and make their ridden career a happy, long and successful one.

And dentals are one of the best investments you can make in your horses. I care a great deal for the comfort of my horses in general, and I also want them to be comfortable when we ask them to work. Further more, I'm a numbers gal. I want the best bang for my buck when it comes to feed because let's face it - feeding is expensive. The start of digestion is actually a lot to do with teeth.... if they aren't grinding their food down well, I'm not getting the best feed conversion I could be and the basic bargain girl in me 110% wants to get every dollar out that I put in. Improve performance, improve comfort, and get my moneys worth - sounds pretty darn good to me!
My horses get powerfloated by a vet every 12-24 months depending on their workload, diet and life stage.... and sometimes more often if we have an issue arise.

Chappies off now for a 10 day holiday while we have one of those ourselves yay!

Is your dog sounding a little β€œruff”?

Common causes of coughing include airway inflammation (e.g. allergies), or bacterial or viral infections of the airways or lungs. However, middle-aged to older pets may also suffer from coughing due to heart disease or masses in the chest.

Coughing pet? Best consult our vets!

To our wonderful Clients & Friends,
I just want to thank everyone for the well wishes after my small nail prick :) The injury was well flushed, and I am on antibiotics, and so hopefully won’t have any further complications.
I’ve had an easy day today, but will be working at Burrandowan Races tomorrow. So please don’t be offended, if you see me at the Races, and I don’t give any β€˜right’ hand shakes!
Once again – Thank you. I appreciate your thoughts.
Regards....Steve

We can’t thank our local community enough, for their wonderful support of Dr Steve after his altercation with a bovine patient yesterday!
Special thanks especially to the Murgon Ambulance for their rescue, Murgon Fire Brigade for removing most of the timber rail that was attached to his right hand and Dr Bek and her team at Kingaroy Hospital who removed the long, right angled rusty nail and the rest of the rail.
Your care and support was very much appreciated.
X-rays of Dr Steve’s right hand!
He might be taking it a bit easier for the next little while!

Our Beginnings.......

Goomeri Veterinary Services opened in January 2018 by Steve Kelly, and is an addition to the already established Wooroolin Veterinary Practice. Steve was a University of Queensland graduate and has worked in and owned various practices including time as a "flying vet" in the Kimberleys and Northern Territory, partnership in Redland Bay Vet Surgery and owned Esk Vet Surgery outright. Steve, his wife Wendy and two children Robert & Alexandra, moved to the South Burnett in 2004 and developed a Large Animal Veterinary Service based from his farm. This rapidly developed into a full time business. In 2010, a shop came available on the highway at Wooroolin and it was decided to open a practice at Wooroolin and return to some small animal work as well as continuing on with the large animal business already established. At that stage, Wendy became directly involved with the business by becoming the surgery nurse/receptionist/book keeper. However, today he has a team of dedicated staff who are passionate about their vocation! Our business has been developed along the lines of the old style traditional rural veterinary practices where we have tended to keep things simple. We may not have the absolutely latest in equipment but have the infrastructure to handle 99% of cases with the option of referral to specialist practices for the remaining 1%. By doing this, we are able to keep our overheads to a reasonable level which also equates to being able to keep our fees at a reasonable level for our clients. Our services include:

Small Animals Preventative Care (Vaccinations, Parasite Control etc.) Consultations for the unwell animal with full work up of cases as required Surgical Procedures (Desexings, orthopaedics, lump removals etc.) Dental procedures Radiography and Ultrasonography Cattle Pregnancy testing Breeding Bull Soundness Evaluation Fertility investigations and Artificial Insemenation programs Regular and Emergency Procedures as required Horses General Consultations for the unwell horse Lameness Examinations Dental Procedures, extractions etc (Power Float) Pregnancy Diagnosis including Ultrasound Scanning, and Artificial Insemenation Radiography & Ultrasonography Surgeries including geldings, rigs, wall strips, tendon surgeries etc.

An emergency after hours service is also supplied by ringing the surgery number at Goomeri (07) 4168 4064 or Wooroolin on (07) 4164 2010.
