, which is at a very good level due to this philosophy. We have new ultrasound equipment, extensive in-house blood testing and the capacity to perform both orthopaedic surgery and complex soft tissue surgeries. Our mobile horse trailer greatly improves the safety of both horses and people during procedures such as dental examination and treatment, standing surgery and re**al exams. Should your animal require specialist care we happily refer to several specialists we know and trust.

🚨 Blue-Green Algae Alert! 🚨
Our Macintyre River has had a recent blue-green algal bloom, posing a serious risk to pets. Dogs swimming in or drinking contaminated water may experience vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or, in severe cases, collapse and death. 🐕

To protect your pets, avoid letting them near affected water. If you’re concerned about exposure, call us at (07) 4671 3688.

🚨 PARVOVIRUS 🚨
The team at BVS have been seeing an increase in prevalence of Canine Parvovirus (commonly referred to "parvo") in the last few weeks. Parvovirus is a dangerous and highly contagious virus that primarily affects unvaccinated dogs, especially puppies under 6 months. It attacks rapidly dividing cells, primarily in the intestines, causing severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and lethargy. The virus spreads easily through contaminated surfaces, faeces, and even people’s shoes or hands.

As with most things, prevention is better than cure! Give the team at BVS a call on (07) 4671 3688 to schedule your dogs next vaccination

A few weeks ago Dr Mac and Xin had the privilege of heading out to vet the Tara Camel races! The pair had an absolute blast vetting the camel races, participating in the yabby races and consuming all the delicious food (and some drinks) that the Tara Festival had on offer 🐪

😴SNUG AS A BUG(s)!😴
We've recently had a new batch of beds, small or large, fluffy or not, square or round show up at Border Vets!
If you've got a little Goldilock pet that is looking for a bed that fits "just right" pop into the clinic to have a look! With limited stock of each size and colour way, the saying "you snooze you lose" really does ring true!

🫣MACS MONDAY MUCK FILES🫣(Claire & Xin addition)
Last week Dr Claire and Xin scooted off to Yelarbon for a young heifer calving.
With only two little feet presenting and a tight squeeze for the calf, an epidural was administered. Dr Claire then performed an episiotomy which allowed for the calf to be delivered va**nally (no side door exits!). An episiotomy is a small incision made under local anesthetic over the v***a to allow for more room for the passage of a calf.
A bag of min-bal as well as some anti-inflammatories and pain relief were administered post-partum and this heifer turned cow went off to chew some grass! 🐄

For those who guessed it, the previous eye was from none other than a Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides)! 🦉
Australia is home to approximately 14 frogmouth species, most of which boast beautiful large yellow eyes! Another interesting fact is these guys are monogamous, meaning they mate for life.
Obviously old mate Tawny wasn't elated with his pairing here...😳

Last week Dr Xin saw this Australian native with a peculiar love heart shaped iris! 💛
This ocular condition is known as a persistent pupillary membrane (PPM), and occurs throughout all species. Typically PPM causes no pain to the animal, however can impact their vision!

Back at it again with another 🫣MACS MONDAY MUCK FILES🫣
Here we have our gory loving Mac right in his element, with a case of bovine tracheal stenosis. Stenosis, from the Greek root 'Stenos' is a fancy way of saying narrow – so this is a case of a narrow trachea!
Tracheal stenosis occurs due to an overwhelming inflammatory process of the upper respiratory tract.
To breathe through that would be like breathing through a flattened straw 😮‍💨

Next off the ranks is one of our lovely nurses, Danielle! Dan first came to the clinic last year on placement and we're lucky enough that she decided to stay! When in the clinic Dan loves a bit of banter, helping with our interesting medical cases as well as cuddling cute puppies (see below!). When given the chance Danielle ventures out to give the vets a hand on farm!

🫣 MAC'S MONDAY MUCK FILES! 🫣
After a bit of a hiatus, and much anticipation, the MUCK FILES are back in action.
Starting off with this pretty prolapse of the cervix and va**na that Mac went and saw on his way home from the Inglewood run last Thursday.

Prolapses can occur due to a wide range of reasons, including (but never limited to): calving stress, nutritional deficiencies, genetics and high body condition score.
Replacement of a prolapse early prevent furthers trauma to this sensitive tissue!
In this case Mac was able to replace the prolapse with a bit of elbow grease and the cow went off as happy as ever.
