This afternoon Buddy presented to the clinic after ingesting multiple Ferrero Rocher chocolates. Chocolate ingestion in dogs can cause them to become extremely ill so this is a reminder as Christmas approaches to ensure you have all human treats out of reach from your pets.
We induced vomiting immediately and counted all of the wrappers to ensure there was none left in his stomach.
Can you guess how many chocolates Buddy actually ate? πŸ™ˆ

As the warmer weather approaches and more people travel to the coast please remember to treat your pet with a tick preventative prior to travelling. Paralysis ticks can be fatal to your pet without the correct treatment.
When travelling to the coast make sure to check your pet all over every night. Ticks love to get in the nitty gritty places such as in between the paws, in the ears, around the eyes.
Symptoms of tick paralysis are:
* Lethargy
* Vomiting
* Reduced appetite
* Panting
* Trouble swallowing
To avoid tick paralysis we highly recommend that you give your pet a preventative such as nexgard or bravecto prior to travelling.

If you suspect that your pet may have been affected by a tick please call the clinic on (02) 4821 1881.

We have a veterinarian on call 24/7 every day of the year for your small and large animal emergencies.

This week is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Week!

We are so grateful for our amazing nurses that continue to put their heart and soul into caring for all of our beautiful patients and ensuring that they get the special care that they deserve. Our nurses do so much behind the scenes that clients do not see, from helping to take radiographs and pathology samples, monitoring anaesthetics, medicating your pets, to helping feed new born puppies, and most importantly, ensuring all our patients have cuddles and are feeling comfortable when they are in our care, just to name a few things.

Thank you to Karen, Hannah, Chelsea, Skye, Claire and Fiona who are all superstars behind the scenes and continue to ensure that the clinic runs smoothly and efficiently.

If you see any of the nurses in the clinic this week, please say a special thank you to them for everything that they do. We don’t know what we would do without you all!

🐍 Snake bites 🐍
In the last week we have treated 5 snake bites with another 2 suspected today.
Here in clinic we have the ability to measure your dog or cats clotting times with a quick simple blood test (clotting times are often prolonged after being bitten by a snake).
This simple test is so helpful because it can help us diagnose a snake bite even before the animal is showing obvious clinical signs.
Symptoms your dog or cat has been bitten by a snake are:
* Vomiting
* Sudden collapse sometimes followed by apparent recovery
* Excessive drooling
* Dilated pupils
* Weakness/unsteadiness/trembling
As the warmer weather approaches if you suspect your pet has been bitten please call the clinic on (02) 4821 1881 and bring your pet in immediately. Snake bites can be fatal without prompt treatment.

We have a veterinarian on call 24/7 every day of the year for your small and large animal emergencies.

Nesting season has begun!
As nesting season is here please be mindful that just because you see a baby bird on the ground it does not mean it’s injured. So many baby birds are bought into us when they’re not injured they are just learning how to fly.
If you see a baby bird that is not injured and is in a safe place, please leave it there if it doesn’t look obviously sick or hurt.
We love treating wildlife but so often their mothers are close by watching over them as they learn how to fly πŸ₯°πŸ’–

Equine dentals 🐴

One of the most common questions we get asked when enquiring about our equine dental procedures is, why do we use a crush and sedation?

Why use the crush?
The portable crush provides a safe form of restraint when completing a wide range of procedures, including dental examinations.

Why sedate?
Sedation is used to help relax and calm the horse allowing us to perform an accurate and thorough examination of their mouth and teeth both safely and efficiently. We provide your horse with a comfortable level of sedation, so they aren’t reacting to our exam, but are still alert enough for us to be able to look. The sedatives we use also provide some pain relief for horses in discomfort.

At Clinton Street Veterinary Clinic we aim to provide high quality dental care, using sedation and our portable crush allows us to do so.

If your horse requires a dental examination or procedure, please give our friendly team a call on (02) 4821 1881.

It is officially the first week of Spring!
As the warmer weather approaches we want to remind everyone to be aware of snakes! We have had multiple clients in the last week mention to us that they have seen a snake out and about already.
Snake bites can be fatal to your pets without prompt treatment so it is important if you suspect your pet has been bitten that you seek veterinary care immediately.
Signs/symptoms of snake bites in dogs and cats are:
* initial collapse and vomiting (sometimes this is followed by apparent recovery)
* Dilated pupils
* Drooling
* Excessive panting
* Weak and wobbly legs
We have a veterinarian on call 24/7 every single day of the year for your small and large animal emergencies. Please call us on (02) 4821 1881 and listen to the message if you require after hours assistance.
