Vale for Richmondlea Delia RID 2002 - 2024
With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to Richmondlea Delia RID, a mare whose legacy transcended borders and whose impact will forever be cherished by those fortunate enough to have been part of her journey. Delia was not just a superbly bred Irish Draught mare but a cornerstone of the Irish Draught herd in the Southern Hemisphere and a true ambassador of the breed.
Born in 2002, by the accomplished Crosstown Dancer and out of Richmondlea Dara, Delia was imported from Ireland to Australia, becoming a foundation mare for Tullow Stud. She embodied everything that makes the Irish Draught breed so exceptional—strength, athleticism, grace, and a nurturing spirit.
Bred by Mrs. J M Doherty in Ireland, Delia produced outstanding foals that have made their mark in eventing across Ireland and Australia. She was spotted at the Royal Dublin Show by Chris and Sue Tufnell, who brought her to Australia, where she earned the title of Supreme Champion Irish Exhibit at the Melbourne Royal Show, further cementing her legacy.
As a broodmare, Delia contributed greatly to the future of the breed in Australia, producing exceptional progeny including Tullow's Hero, Tullow's Live the Dream, Tullows Trevalda Dream, Tullow's Rich 'n' Royal, and Tullow's Final Fling.
When Chris and Sue retired from breeding, Delia was offered a new chapter at Trevalda Stud, where she lived out her days alongside her daughter, Tullows Trevalda Dream (Tommi), who too was exported to New Zealand. At Trevalda, Delia continued to shine, crossing beautifully with Ballineen Blue Mountain to produce more exceptional offspring. Two of her babies, Trevalda Mountain Dancer and Trevalda Mountain Damask, remain cherished at Trevalda, while her son, Trevalda Mountain Duke, is now starting his stud career in Canterbury.
Delia’s grandchildren, both in New Zealand and Australia, will carry her legacy forward. Her influence on the Irish Draught breed will continue for generations to come. Delia was more than a mare—she was a cherished companion, a mother, and a living testament to the best qualities of the Irish Draught breed. Her contribution to the purebred herd in the Southern Hemisphere has been nothing short of extraordinary, and the joy she brought to so many lives will never be forgotten.
Sue has lovingly shared photos of Delia, which are deeply appreciated by all who were connected to her and whose lives she touched. These memories will remain a treasure for years to come. ☘
