TFS held a field day on the 30th May thanks to support from Southern NSW Innovation Hub. There was some very interesting insight from Charlie as to how his trial of broadcasting corn to his lambing ewes has gone so far. If you missed the workshop, check out the video below!

Last Friday, TFS hosted an on farm workshop at Merrill focused on helping farmers navigate dry times. Matt from South East Local Land Services provided a seasonal outlook, discussed how to get the most out of your pasture this winter and looked at supplementary feeding options, including corn, which generated plenty of discussion. We then went into the paddock with Charlie Bell to see the broadcasting of corn in action to some ewes and lambs. To finish up, Charlie talked through his containment feeding process and the design of his pens. It was a very worthwhile day, with plenty of discussion and insight from local producers. Whilst times are pretty tough at the moment, it’s incredible to see producers thinking a bit out of the box and doing things a bit differently.
Big thank you to Southern NSW Innovation Hub for their funding support.

Some great totals around our region last week, bringing some relief for many of our producers. Slow and steady rain meant it has mostly all penetrated into our soils with soil moisture increasing by at least 10% across all of our of probe sites. To see more, check out www.farmingforecaster.com.au

Farmers are preparing for a tough winter ahead and one option to ensure ewes and lambs get their energy requirements is the broadcasting of corn and beans in the paddock. This will be a key focus of our upcoming dry times workshop on the 30th May. See below article as to how a Victorian farmer did this last year -

WESTERN Victorian sheep producers forced to lamb down ewes on rain-starved sub-optimal pastures have successfully spread grains and pulses in lambing paddocks as a substitute for the current lack of pasture...Read More

TFS are running an on-farm workshop to help producers prepare for a tough winter. The workshop will be held in Gunning on the 30th May at 9.30am. We will be looking at the option of broadcasting corn to ewes and lambs during winter and the success some farmers have already had with this option.

Guest speakers:
- Matthew Lieschke (South East Local Land Services)
- Charlie Bell (farmer)

Topics to be discussed:
- Stock confinement feeding options and decisions. This will include a walk around the farm's confinement lots.
- Alternative feed options, including broadcasting corn to lambing ewes

This project is supported by Southern NSW Innovation Hub, through funding from the Australian Government's Future Drought Fund.

South East Local Land Services has just released their South East seasonal outlook for autumn 2025 and can be viewed below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsL2iFbPy1I

Key points:
- Seasonal conditions over the last 3-4 months been extremely patchy due to storm rainfall. Unfortunately this patchiness continues – some areas received good rainfall in late March and have a start, while others areas are still eagerly waiting for an autumn break.
- Autumn lambing and calving systems will be under the most pressure at present. It is particularly important to ensure energy and protein requirements are being met in the lead up to lambing/calving and into lactation, especially for twin bearing ewes.
- Once the break occurs, try to avoid grazing key paddocks for 3-4 weeks to allow plants to establish some leaf area.
- Even though the new green feed might be short, it will be of high quality. A short green pick makes a big difference to the amount of supplement required.

Welcome to the South East seasonal outlook for autumn 2025. In this video, Senior Agricultural Advisor Matt Lieschke from Local Land Services provides an ove...
