Valentines’ day is just around the corner, and it’s a time to show love to all those special beings in our lives- including our feline friends! ❣️🐱 As we plan to shower our someone special with love, let’s also remember the importance of keeping their furry family members safe. Did you know that some plants commonly associated with this romantic holiday can be toxic to cats? Take the time to educate yourself on what plants are harmful to your furry companions, and make sure to steer clear of giving them as gifts. Let’s celebrate Valentine’s Day responsibly by keeping our homes a safe and loving environment for our beloved pets. 💞

In particular, steer clear of lilies! Every part of the lily plant is toxic to cats and even the smallest lick or nibble can cause severe kidney damage, which can be deadly.

Visit the link in our bio to read up on more ways you can keep your cat safe-at-home.

Located at 8 Kemp St, this centre is open from 9 am to 4 pm daily, including weekends.

With WIRES wildlife vet Dr. Tania Bishop on-site, immediate assessment and treatment are provided. The need is critical—on the first day alone, 91 affected birds were attended to!

More than 200 birds with Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome have been taken in by wildlife carers around Grafton as researchers call on citizen scientists to help find the cause.

31/01/2024

ALERT: Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome (LPS) is affecting hundreds of wild lorikeets.

Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome is a seasonal disease primarily affecting Rainbow Lorikeet populations in Northern NSW and Southern Queensland.

LPS can cause afflicated birds to appear unbalanced and become unable to fly, despite not showing apparent injuries. As the disease progresses, birds will lose control of their limbs and beaks entirely.

Early treatment increases the likelihood of successful rehabilitation and release. Therefore, getting affected birds into veterinary care as soon as possible is vital.

If you find a lorikeet suffering from LPS symptoms, please transport it to the nearest vet or contact WIRES immediately at 1300 094 737.

Thank you to WIRES Wildlife Vet Dr Tania Bishop for providing this invaluable information.

There are currently reports of Cane Toads in the Clarence Valley showing signs of being ill or diseased – blackened, very dark in colour and/or sunning themselves during the day.

We are working with LLS (Local Land Services), who are currently looking into this via the scientific testing of specimens.

If you become aware of a toad or native frog exhibiting these signs, please contact us immediately, and we will assist in recovering the toad/s and notify LLS.

Please call our office on 02 6643 5009.

☠️Rat Bait Poisoning🐀

As the weather cools down & the rodent activity increases, please be mindful when using baits.

Rat baits are very dangerous to all animals. Although aimed to kill rats, baits are flavoured, making them enticing to not only rodents but other animals too.

Signs of rat bait poisoning may include:
- Bruising
- Bloody faeces or urine
- Nose bleeds
- Vomiting blood
- Coughing
- Shortness of breath
- Seizures
- Lethargy
- Increased thirst
- Weakness / Wobbliness
- Loss of appetite
- Pale gums

**PLEASE NOTE - after ingesting, your pet may seem fine & healthy. Often these signs & symptoms don’t occur till days later!

If you think your pet has had access to rat bait please DO NOT wait! Seeking veterinary treatment as soon as possible is critical.

Although bait poisoning can be treated, the chance of recovery depends on; the amount of bait consumed, what kind of bait they ate & how soon treatment is provided once ingested.
