Rawhide Chews
Rawhide Chews - made from dried animal skin, seems natural right? 🤨
What’s important to know is where & how rawhide chews are actually made…
Rawhide chews are made from the leather industry’s leftovers. Most hides are taken directly from slaughterhouses & placed into high-salt brines, which helps slow their decay.
Most rawhide chews are manufactured in China & can take weeks to months before making it to the tanneries. Once the hides arrive, they are soaked & treated with sodium sulphide lime to help separate the fat from the skin & the hair is stripped using harsh chemicals. The hides are then washed & whitened using a solution of hydrogen peroxide and/or bleach, followed by any colour dye they desire & finally, they’re chemically preserved before being shipped out to sell.
Not only are these treats so highly processed but rawhide is not easily digested, which is why when swallowed, pose such a high obstruction risk. Rawhide can last for weeks in the stomach, causing blockages & gastrointestinal upsets.
