Introducing "Hannon's Persephone", or as we affectionately call her, Cora! 🐴 Our orphan filly has been shining bright in the show ring lately. She brought home Supreme Champion Heavy Horse at the Gympie Show in May and just secured first place in her class at the Mary Valley Show today! 🌟 We're beyond proud of how far she's come. Keep an eye on this rising star! "

Horatio came home to the farm today after a few months resting up ahead of the new breeding season. We're excited to be standing this horse in QLD for the first time. It appears he's also delighted to be back on the job!

Hi everyone, due to the interest received in our recent successful AI using chilled semen, I thought I would share some of the particulars involved. The process is really very simple. Mare owners will contact the stallion owner and advise that they wish to order semen and pay the service fee. The mare is then scanned by the veterinarian to assess where she is in her cycle and her breeding suitability. A decision can then be made to manipulate her to bring her forward if desired.
The vet will advise when to order the semen. You then phone the stallion owner and order it. The stallion is taken to the clinic and collected. The semen is then chilled and packaged ready for shipping. Collection fees are payable by the mare owner and paid directly to the clinic doing the collection. These will vary depending on the clinic but should be somewhere around $300.
Shipping costs are payable by the mare owner and will vary depending on the distances and locations involved. The collecting clinic will usually organise shipping and these costs can be paid directly to the clinic.
The chilled semen arrives at the insemeninating clinic and is placed in the mare. A rescan of the mare is then conducted 14-21 days post insemenination depending on your vets preference to confirm pregnancy.
These additional costs over live cover may seem off putting at first, but once you factor in transport and agistment as well as your mare being away and in someone elses care they start to become more attractive. There is also the benefit of access to stallions that are large distances away.

For those of you interested in the actual quality of the semen being shipped Horatio's semen on this particular shipment returned 75% progressively motile s***m (meaning they are heading somewhere) after 30 hours in the chilled shipper, a very good result. This was obviously assesed by the insemeninating veterinarian.

If anyone would like some more information or has any questions please feel free to contact me. I'll post in the near future about what's involved in training stallions to jump phantoms for collection. (It's part of my job!)
