With New Year’s celebrations just around the corner, this often includes fireworks. Sadly, they can be stressful and scary for your pets. You can help your pet during this time by
• giving them a safe and secure area to hide or bringing them inside
• playing some music to help reduce the noise of the fireworks.

If you know your pet is fearful of fireworks give us a call to have a chat about other options to help your pet, this may include a visit for some medication.

Tips to minimize an emergency vet visit and have yourself a furry Christmas and yappy New Year 🎄

Scrap the scraps
Holiday food is often rich, contains ingredients toxic to pets or is out of our pets’ normal diet. This can potentially lead to your pet becoming unwell and requiring vet attention.
Dangerous foods for pets can include chocolate, sultanas (that means mince pies & fruit cakes), grapes, cooked bones, fatty meat, gravy, stuffing, ham, alcohol, nuts, corn on the cob & xylitol (artificial sweetener).
If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic call your vet ASAP.

Watch out, snakes are about
Keep cats inside when possible over snake season and keep a close eye on dogs when out and about. Keep your grass and garden short to avoid giving snakes places to hide.

Stay cool!
Keep pets cool by giving them access to shade or indoors in the air conditioning and access to fresh drinking water

Put trash in its place!
Ribbon & string are often enticing to cats but can lead them to intestinal obstruction, requiring surgery. Lock your pets away during present opening and dispose of rubbish (& food scraps) carefully.
Keep batteries out of reach of pets (and kids). Pets like licking batteries. They can cause toxicities, ulcers and even obstructions.

Safety first
Pets don't often have the best road sense. Ensure your pets are kept away from vehicles whilst visitors are in & out.

Ruff and tumbles
Many dog fights occur over the holiday period when friends and family gather with their dogs. With heightened emotions, new surroundings and toys, dogs can become agitated and stressed.
Plan ahead if you have family and friends visiting that your pets have a quiet and secure area to retreat to. If your pet happens to get into a fight, they should be seen by your vet.

If you are concerned about your pet over the holiday period call your vet for advice.
