Do you ever feel overwhelmed with all the feed advice you get for your horse?

You rock up to your Agistment centre and you’re making up your horse’s feed and a fellow agistee walks past and says “oh you should try XYZ feed, it’s literally transformed my horse”. You’re in a dressage lesson and your instructor suggests you try XYZ supplement to build your horse’s top line. Your horse is starting to drop condition and your friend recommend 3 different feeds that you should mix together to “bulk him up”. Your horse is spooky and the person you’re riding with recommends a calming paste that “changed her horse”. You’ve got a metabolic horse and your aunty recommends that you feed “white hay and chaff”. Ever been here? I know I have.

You walk into a feed store, there are supplement choices galore, bags of feed to boot, myriad hay types to choose from - but how do you make the right choice of what to get for your horse in their current environment?

That’s where our next Neigh Night comes into its own. We’ll be hosting Sophie from Integral Equine Nutrition where she will be talking you through the nutrition basics to help you build a healthier horse. She’ll help you understand basic nutrition principles and arm you with knowledge to help make the right decisions when you’re in the situations listed above. Better yet, she’s staying for longer to do individual custom consults so you can really cater your horse’s diet to their needs - contact Integral Equine Nutrition to book as these spots are filling fast.

But why have we chosen Sophie for this talk? Apart from being an exceptionally intelligent, experienced and qualified nutritionist - she’s independent. So what’s this B Grade teff about? Well, it’s tested, it’s low sugar and it’s clean, but it’s not as green as our A Grade and the stems aren’t as fine. Is it palatable? Yep, for normal horses it is, but if you have a fussy Queen - order what you know 👌

Dr. Butler will delve into the causes of stringhalt, immediate actions to take, and crucial rehabilitation strategies. Even if you think your horse is safe, this presentation is invaluable – with horses, you never know what might happen.

But you have a laminitic prone horse and you've been told you need to feed "low sugar hay" - but what does that even mean? How do you know the "tested" hay that you've bought is indeed low sugar? 🤯

We've decided to make a series of short videos to help you read these feed tests, so you can be equipped with knowledge when purchasing hay for your beloved equine friend.

In this first video we talk about sugars and starch - what numbers you need to pay attention to, what thresholds those numbers should be under and the reasoning behind it!
