Life in a beehive can be pretty brutal. There is very little honey in the area where this hive is, like much of the southern highlands, and the worker bees have decided the drones are too much of a drain of resources to stay. This means the boys have been kicked out of this hive including the pupae.

It is always interesting see the difference in the consistency and amount of propolis different hives produce. Most hives produce a pretty moderate amount that is a little bit tacky but not over the top. Then you get hives like this that produce a huge amount of toffee like propolis. Maybe I will have to collect some and think of what I would like to make with it.

The trees are saying spring is here. Our ornamental pear trees are just starting to bloom. They are always the first to flower in spring. Soon we will have enough of these flowers the bees will have a feast.

The NSW DPI are holding a one day varroa mite management workshops on the 19th and 20th July at Goulburn Golf Club. This is your chance to get informed on what you need to do to make age varroa mite in your hives.
If the DPI don’t get enough bookings it will be cancelled and the opportunity will be missed.
This is free, lunch and morning tea are provided along with a training workbook and a hive inspection diary.

Today was another day of learning about varroa mite management with . I highly recommend getting along to a varroa mite management workshop when they come to your area. Preparation is the key to getting ready for varroa mites.

I did a removal of a small hive from a water meter in Goulburn today. Hopefully I can build them up enough that they can get through winter fairly strong.
