Social walking g is about letting the dog be social and interact with the world whilst out and about.

Unlike a typical heel which should see the dog walking next to the handler and not allowed to sniff or interact etc.

It is more controlled but not exactly fulfilling for the dog.

Each have their place.

This is the 2nd time Slinky has joined us as there is work being done at his house.

They have all cqlmed down today and walked much nicer from the start.

Slinky made his second day easily.

A newbie joined us today.

So a little insanity ensued. Thankfully it was short-lived. The excitement was lingering though.

Overall they all did very well after I changed the game.

This is what happens when 2 puppies need a rest.

They now rest in their inside kennel - their crate. This is awesome as it means they are happy to feel.comfortable in their own space but also without being in our pockets.

Lead training and crate training.

Lewy often willingly goes into his cage or 'to bed when he wants time out.

Sailor is generally more reluctant.

Enter lead training. The puppies have to stay within the confines of the leash. This teaches them not to pull or lunge. They can do what they want as long as they don't breach the end of the lead.

Sailor didn't like this aspect of training today and put herself to bed in her safe place (their crate) twice.

Let's talk crate training.

There is MUCH more to it than simply caging your dogs.

The theory behind crate training is that generally dogs will not soil (urinate or deficate) where they eat or sleep. So the crate becomes the dog's 'den' or inside kennel or safe space - an area where the dog spends quiet time doing pleasurable things - chewing a bone or chew treat like a dental stick or rawhide/pig's ear etc or of course a chew toy.

They don't spend all day in their crate, but they are not allowed to roam free throughout the house until they have got the idea that they go outside to toilet.

To achieve this the pup spends time in the crate while inside and every hour or so they are taken outside to toilet. When toileting occurs outside the pup is praised and rewarded with pats and treats if you have them (don't forget praise is a reward too). And any accidents inside are thoroughly cleaned to remove any scent and of course mess. If the puppy is caught toileting inside, a verbal reprimand can interrupt the toileting and then the pup can be taken outside to an appropriate place and praised

The idea is then that the pup associates the good behaviour of toileting appropriately outside with good things like praise, pats and treats. And learns that toileting inside is inappropriate and will result in punishment such as a verbal reprimand and perhaps other aversive (unlikable) things such as loud noises that may startle the pup and assist in interrupting the toileting.

Toilet training using crate training can be quickly successful.

It also has the added bonus of giving your pup a safe place inside that they can retire to to decompress or simply to have a nap.

I have used crate training in the past with my older huskies with great success - to the point that Vader and Rylee both used to use the crate as their 'bedrooms'.

Crate training is not cruel, it can be a great and effective tool if used appropriately.

This is how I spent my Sunday.

Drove to Orange and back to collect Sailor the 10 week old German Shepherd puppy.

Did so with Lewy at my feet, and a 5.5 yr old qnd 6 yr old in the back.

Super proud of my son and my neice as well as the puppies. Barely a peep on the way down and less on the way home.

Welcome to the family Sailor.

So I have been fighting the desire to get a new puppy...

Life is busy enough as it is for my family qnd I really thought the extra food bills and vet bills and stress from extra animals etc wasn't something my household needed.

I spoke to my mum who lives with my son and I and she said 'If you want one then get one'...

So.long story short I.couldnt decide whether I wanted another Husky. . Or another German Shepherd.

So I got one of each.

So the newest members of our furbaby family (to go with the 2 older huskies, 3 aging cats, 4 budgies, 1 chook, 3 turtles, 1 guppy and a python) are Leeuwin the male husky - born Feb 18th. And Sailor the German Shepherd puppy born 16th Feb.

I found both puppies around ANZAC Day... they would have been so very much loved and adored by my late father who was a Vietnam Vet so we thought their names needed military significance.

Sailor because my parents were both navy people. And Leeuwin because my Dad was posted to HMAS Leeuwin in Perth which is how I was born and bred as a Sandgroper.

Can't wait to go and get little Sailor girl on the weekend.

I WILL have my hands full!

Meet Lewy (Leeuwin). I collected him.on Sunday so he has lived with us for nearly 3 days.

He is a purebred Siberian Husky. 9 weeks old.

He is settling in very well. I.may jinx myself here but he is also picking up toilet training very well. Fingers crossed that and his crate training continue to do well.
