ALERT ❗Heartworm in dogs on the rise in Central Coast ❗
Heartworm disease is a silent killer ☠️ transmitted by mosquitoes 🦟The disease causes a cough which progressively becomes worse ❗The dog 🐕 becomes inactive and lethargic due to the weakening of its heart❗By the time you notice the signs of the disease, the damage that has been caused is serious ❗
This is one disease that can be prevented with yearly heartworm prevention injection called Afilaria SR-12 for adult dogs✅ Given at the same time as your dog’s annual vaccination and health check. Can be used in puppies from 12 weeks.

KEEPING A SHORT NOSED BRACHYCEPHALIC DOG SAFE AND BREATHING EASY DURING HOT DAYS 🥵🌞
Panting is the primary way that dogs cool down. Brachycephalic dogs due to their facial structure do not breathe and pant efficiently making them unable to cool themselves down properly and at extreme risk for developing heatstroke or heat exhaustion ❗
Brachycephalic / short nosed dogs include: 🐾Pugs🐾Bulldogs🐾Maltese🐾Chihuahuas🐾Shih Tzus🐾Pekinese 🐾Boston Terriers🐾Boxer🐾King Charles Spaniel
PROTECTING SHORT NOSE PET DURING EXTREME HEAT ✅
✳️Keep them out of the heat ✳️Keep them indoors if possible ✳️If outside, keep in the shade as much as possible ✳️Water – Always have water on hand. Have a pool or bath of water on hand for a quick cool down after exercise ✳️Exercise – Walks and playtime should be short and at a slower pace. Exercise in the morning before sunset, or in the evening after sundown ✳️Weight – Make sure you keep your dog at a healthy weight ✳️Collar – Use a harness and not collar when walking dog. A collar can pull up on the throat lessening the airways.
DANGER SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR ❗❗
❌excessive panting or panting that looks or sounds laboured ❌difficulty walking or walking very slowly ❌vomiting.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT YOUR DOG MAY BE SUFFERING FROM HEATSTROKE OR HEAT EXHAUSTION ✅cool down immediately! ✅If you’re outside, bring them indoors where it’s cooler ✅Apply ice packs or cold towels to head, neck, and chest or run cool (not cold) water over pet. Drench the pet IMMEDIATELY with cool water for 5-10 minutes. Don’t pour water on the nose. DO NOT wrap the pet in towels, towels trap heat and make problem worse ✅Get a fan going to increase the airflow in the room ✅place them in some shallow, cool water in the bathtub, or spray with water from a water diffuser ✅give them water to drink but keep an eye on them as they drink brachycephalic dogs are at a higher risk of choking due to their smaller tracheas.
Contact your local family vet or emergency vet if you think your dog is suffering from heat exhaustion or heat stroke ❗
