๐ฅโผ๏ธEMERGENCY๐ฅโผ๏ธ
Well done Dr Damien for making it to this emergency calving in a very busy schedule todayโฆ
This calf is super lucky the owners recognised a heifer not progressing normally with birth and called for advice straight away.
In this case, the heifer showed no progression after 15 mins of active pushing.
The job is not over yet as we try and get this first calving heifer to mother up, not an easy task!
Well done owners and fingers crossed the heifer takes to this calf or itโs time for the bottle!
Some take home messages:
1. Observe your pregnant cattle and recognise any deviation from normal progression, itโs still a judgement call but take a look at link below:
https://www.bovinevetonline.com/news/education/when-assist-calving
2. Better to be over cautious than not
3. Have good facilities including a crush
4. Be careful with breeding too early, a heifer needs to be adequate size so there is room in her pelvis to expel calf. We normally advise to join a heifer at approximately 5/8ths mature body weight.
Thanks everyone! See you on the road!
Hey MRVS folks!๐๐๐ฅณ Itโs good news story time.. WELCOME HOME BLUE! Its been a long road to recovery for Blue the Droughtmaster calf who sadly lost his mother at an early age. It was crucial to the survival of Blue that we got him to a stage where he was strong enough to feed independently and survive in nature. Thanks to the long weeks of dedicated nursing from Peta, our incredible large animal vet nurse, Blue was re-united with a couple of very happy owners and back home where he belongs. Together, Dr. Damien, Peta and Blues owners went above and beyond and itโs great to able to celebrate the pay off. Well done to the MRVS road crew and Blues owners and welcome home Blue โ. See you on the road from the MRVS Team ๐๐๐๐ด๐ด๐๐๐ค ๐ค
Aww CHECK THIS OUT!!โฆTWINNING!!
What a way to start off the new year. Dr Damien and Peta rushed off at the end of the day to assist with a breech calving on farm to deliver two for the price of oneโฆTWINS!!
Peta was focused on resuscitating the first calf while Damien happily presented a surprise second package to the farmers and Petaโs delight! Great job!

THIS IS A MUST WATCH AND SOMETHING YOU DONโT GET TO SEE EVERYDAY!!!!This cow had a severe vaginal prolapse which meant her cervix was completely closed and damagedโฆat best it would of taken a week for the cervix to heal enough to pass and because this cow was at due date we couldnโt take the chanceโฆso to try and save cow and calf we performed a caesarean in the field. The calf had a very difficult start, but with our help and of course, mums, this bull calf is now up and drinking off mum. A great outcome for all!
We love our working dogs ๐๐๐

SNAKE VERSUS MRVS VEHICLEโฆ.!!! ๐ณ
We encounter all types of wildlife scenarios while on the road but check this brave guy tackling the MRVS vehicle today ๐ฎ unreal and I wouldnโt have thought typical behaviour of what looks like a python?
Snake 1โฆDr. Damien nilโฆheโs outta there.
Snake was keen to show Dr. Damien who was boss of the road thatโs for sure..or perhaps he was furious that someone was disturbing his sun-baking on the nice warm roadโฆ๐๐
Have a safe weekend everyone..see you on the road ๐โ

Hey there MRVS community!
It's been a while since we posted and apologies for this! We are working on getting on top of our facebook engagement because we love sharing stories that are interesting and educational! This video we just shared was a horse castration under anaesthesia performed today.
We'd love to hear from you about what sorts of information you enjoy...
Send us your thoughts in the comments section about what you'd like to see more of, we'll do our best to make sure it's included in our future posts!
Dr. Damien will be donating his time to be on call for the Gympie Show. If you see the Mary River Vet vehicle or Dr. Damien, feel free to come over for a chat - we'd love to catch up with you.
A big thanks to the Gympie District Show for all of their hard work making the show what it is today. Thankfully the weather is permitting and lots of folks attending this year. Congratulations all. ๐๐๐๐
