Nosing about leads to a sore nose 🦔💔
He wasn't under arrest, but this Short Beaked Echidna came into our Wildlife Hospital under the watchful eye of a Police Constable.

Sadly, he had been found with an injured beak and a few abrasions to his face and body after what was most likely a run in with a car while sniffing out his dinner.

With some delicate stitches our Wildlife Vet Team stitched up his nose and monitored him closely to ensure he could once again rely on his sensitive snout to sniff out food.

After just over two weeks in hospital, he was ready to start the next stage of his rehabilitation with one of our amazing wildlife carers, and will soon be able to be released back into the wild ❤️

With today, Monday 3rd March, being World Wildlife Day 🐨 it’s a reminder of how important it is for us all to do our part in protecting our native wildlife. How can you help? 👇

‼️ Be alert while driving and aware of where wildlife are located – be extra careful when driving at dusk and dawn as these are the times wildlife are most active.

🚮 Cleaning up and disposing of rubbish appropriately – if you spot any rubbish while out on a walk or in waterways, please place it in a bin to avoid wildlife becoming entangled with it or eating it.

🚗 Sadly, there may be times when you cannot avoid an animal when driving. When it’s safe to do so, stop, pull over and check your vehicle, as sometimes animals can get caught in car grills and engine bays. Call1300 ANIMAL (264 625) or your local wildlife rescue group for assistance.

🦘 Pouch checks can save lives – if you come across an injured animal, if they have a pouch please check for any young.

An up-to-date microchip leads to a happy reunion 🐱❤️
What started off as a normal day at school quickly changed when lessons were interrupted after a cat was found stuck down a drain!

Staff at the school sprung into action, quickly rescuing a very thin and shaken from her adventure cat, and brining her to RSPCA.

Luckily, when the RSPCA Team scanned her for a microchip, not only did they find her name to be Nancy but her owner's contact details were up to date!

Our Lost and Found Team had the pleasure of reuniting Nancy with her family, who were shocked and overjoyed to receive the call she had been found. Having gone missing over a month ago, Nancy's family had searched high and low fearing the worst had happened to their beloved pet.

And as it turns out, the drain was on the same street Nancy went missing and she might have been stuck down there unable to get out for several days. Thankfully with the return of kids to school, she was found in time!

Nancy's family couldn't wait to have her back home safe and sound, quickly jumping in the car to pick her up from our Animal Care Centre where many a happy tear was shed when the family reunited ❤️

Speaking of microchips... is your pet's microchip updated? 🤔 With the closure of HomeSafeID, it's the perfect time to check your pet's microchip is up-to-date to maximise your chances of being quickly reunited should they go missing.

Caught with no way to escape 💔
Brought into our Eumundi Rehabilitation Centre, this poor squirrel glider had been found caught in barbed wire and unable to escape.

The barbed wire had damaged the skin between his front and back legs that helps him glide, so a little TLC was needed to get him back in the air. Thankfully, our team were able to fix up the minor injuries that were sustained from his ordeal.

Now named Latte, his wounds soon healed it was off to the RSPCA Aviary. A flight assessment showed while he could move fast, his right arm was a little restricted. So, our dedicated Wildlife Team worked with him every day to help him regain the movement he needed.

After almost 50 days in care, Latte the Squirrel Glider was back to full flying form and was ready to be released back into the wild in Bundaberg.

🚑 Our RSPCA teams are rescuing 27,000 animals, just like Latte, every year in Queensland. To continue to save lives, we need to improve our capacity to care.

❤️ You can help protect the future of wildlife by helping build a Centre that can support proactive wildlife care through education, training and research, as well as emergency care. Find out more 👉 bit.ly/4hMYblL

Meet Hugo 👋
Don't let his grumpy face fool you, Hugo can be quite the affectionate (on his own terms!) little soul! 😻

This 6-year-old independent gentleman is searching for a loving furever family. And on his wish list is a low-key indoor home with lots of comfy sleeping spot where he lounge and watch the world go by (one of his favourite things to do) 🌞🪟

Hugo is currently sporting a not so great haircut, after making his way into our care as a stray in desperate need of a very big grooming session. But don't worry, his luscious locks are growing fast and he'll have his fluffy furry coat back soon. To keep this distinguished gentleman looking stunning, regular grooming is a must 🪮❤️

His dislikes include 🎉 loud noises (they're scary!), and 🙌 people who don't respect boundaries - cuddles are great, but too much handling can be overwhelming!

If you're looking for a fluffy companion who appreciates peace and quite, Hugo might be your purrfect match 👉 https://www.rspcaqld.org.au/adopt/search/animaldetails?AnimalId=995091

A very lucky escape 🦎❤️
In summer as the temperature rises, our wildlife can be found trying to cool off in the closest water source they can find – even pools!

But our pools are a hazard for wildlife...

A recent patient at our RSPCA Wildlife Hospital served as a timely reminder of the importance of giving our wildlife a helping hand when it comes to water safety, including checking around your pool.

This Eastern Water Dragon found himself in a spot of bother when looking to cool down and found himself stuck under a pool filter. Luckily, he was spotted by a member of public who gave us a call for help. Our RSPCA Rescue Team jumped into action, and with a bit of maneuvering and some lubrication he slipped free!

A trip was in order to our RSPCA Wildlife Hospital for a check-over. Thankfully, he was excellent health and was able to be released back to the wild ❤️

ℹ️ It’s important for us to make sure our pools are safe, not just for us but for them as well. Provide a lifeline by draping something over the pool’s edge, like a heavy duty rope, that animals can grab onto to help them out. Pool steps can also be too high for some animals to exit the pool easily. By placing bricks or large rocks alongside the steps will give them that extra boost they need to climb out. And it's always best to make it a routine to check your pool for wildlife.

❤️ You can help protect the future of wildlife by helping build a Centre that can support proactive wildlife care through education, training and research, as well as emergency care. Find out more 👉 bit.ly/434EUHQ

Bodie's honourable tail 🐶❤️
We're so happy to hear just how well Bodie is settling in with his new family.

"He is currently being crate trained at night and has quickly become part of the family. Yesterday he completed some puppy training at our local vet (5 sessions total). In my humble opinion, he was the valedictorian of the class!"

"Although he has been a little challenging to potty train, he is getting better each day. He is a very intelligent dog. He is slowly learning how to “heel” during walks and he is HIGHLY motivated by food and treats."

"I just wanted to say thank you for allowing us the opportunity to adopt Bodie."

Thank you Kristin for sharing your Tails of Honour. We are so grateful you and your family opened your heart to Bodie and that he is now living his best life with you 🥰🐾

This Valentine’s Day ❤️ put your health first and your pets’ too by keeping up-to-date with heartworm prevention.

Just one mosquito, just one bite, that's all it takes for your pet to develop the deadly disease.

Known to be notoriously difficult to treat, the damage to your pets heart and lungs can be permanent. Not only can recovery take months and be costly, it can take months or years for symptoms to appear.

Prevention is better than cure 🙋‍♀️ Ensure your pet is protected year round.

‼️ IMPORTANT UPDATE: PET MICROCHIPPING‼️
Microchip Pet Registry company, HomeSafeID, will soon cease to operate online.

What does this mean? 👇
If you know your pet is registered with HomeSafeID, you will need to change your microchip registration to another company 📝

If your pet's registration isn't updated, should they go missing or are found, vets/councils/animal shelters will no longer be able to view your pet’s ownership details listed on their microchip when it is scanned, making it difficult to reunite you!

ℹ️ Find out how to check your pet’s microchip and change to a new registry 👉 bit.ly/3Qe3ZbT

If you don’t know your pet’s microchip number or have lost their paperwork with their registration details, contact your veterinarian, council or animal shelter. They can scan your pet and provide the microchip number.

If you adopted a pet from RSPCA with a HomeSafe ID registry or had a microchip implanted at a RSPCA Community Day, while we cannot update your pet’s microchip details for you, we can help you find your adoptee’s microchip number and answer any questions you may have on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) or your local shelter.

We are aware of posts on social media about a particular person alleged of being cruel to animals and accusations that RSPCA Queensland is not acting. This is simply untrue. We can confirm that the situation is under investigation by our Inspectors and being acted upon in accordance with the Animal Care and Protection Act (2001).

RSPCA Queensland investigates all animal welfare concerns.

Naming people on social media before investigations are complete can have a detrimental outcome on the situation and can result in trial by media.

If you have a concern for an animal’s welfare you can report firsthand information to our team via 1300 ANIMAL (265 624) or by lodging a complaint on our website.

However, social media sharing and harassment of named individuals can become detrimental to cases. If this takes place in the lead up to sentencing, or if it is apparent in court that there will be significant media coverage of the case, then a court will often take account of this ‘extra curial’ punishment dealt out to the offenders by the community via social media. If this happens, courts reduce the penalty they would otherwise impose, on the basis that the offender has already been punished, or is likely to be further punished, by the embarrassment and harassment in the public arena. We have seen this happen with past investigations.

Do not give the courts any excuse to lessen the penalty for the offenders by engaging in online harassment.
