Say WHAAAT?

We are stoked to announce the launch of our fresh new mobile number for easy access and reach for all our clients ๐Ÿ“ฑ. Starting from, well, sometime last week (๐Ÿ˜†), our mobile number 0483 987 461 is in operation!!
We have taken this step to improve communications and offer another way of contacting us for NON-URGENT MATTERS. We are hoping this will make for a simpler way to stay in touch regarding patient updates, reminders, bookings, medication requests etc.

Similarly to our email and FB messenger options, we will monitor incoming messages daily and do our best to reply within a few hours. However, please keep in mind that we do not currently have a dedicated receptionist, so there will be some lag time in our correspondence, especially during busier periods. Please note this number is for sms/mms only, though if you call it you'll be able to leave voicemail as well.

For any URGENT matters (such as emergencies or same day appointments) please continue using our primary number โ˜Ž๏ธ 8388 1200 as that is the most reliable way of contacting us during hours. Our after hours emergency pager number remains the preferred method of contact for after hours emergencies.

We are hoping this is a welcome service and are open to any feedback you may have as we start utilising it more.

Meet the lovely Olga. At almost 38 years young, she is our oldest patient โ€“ and check out how fabulous she looks!! ๐Ÿ˜ Olga is here to remind us all that age is but a number. Of course, aging brings with it certain conditions and increased incidence of some diseases. But on its own, is ๐˜•๐˜–๐˜› a reason for horses to be unwell, dull, or skinny.

Olga has had PPID (Equine Cushings) for almost 20 years (longer than Iโ€™ve been her vet!) and also lacks any functional teeth by now. Regular health checks, including blood testing and dental exams, ensure that she is well managed on her medication and special diet (and doesnโ€™t have any mobile, painful or sharp teeth fragments that need removing!).

Olgaโ€™s condition is a true testament to her ownerโ€™s care and dedication, and we hope that she can serve as an example of how โ€œbut he/she is oldโ€ is no longer an acceptable excuse for older horses looking poorly.

If you have any concerns about your aging horse, or if itโ€™s been a few years since their last veterinary assessment, please contact us! We do have a soft spot for our seniors and want to help you care and manage them as best as possible, so they can enjoy their twilight years in the joy and comfort they deserve โค

The time has come to farewell Alex, as she moves on to pursue other interests outside the veterinary industry. Thank you Alex for all your help around the office and the care you provided to our clients and patients over the last year!

Today will be Alex's last day, so please be patient with us until we find a suitable person to fill her (somewhat big) shoes. Please note that in the interim, the office will not be consistently manned during our regular hours HOWEVER this will have no effect on our routine and emergency vet services, which will be available as usual.

17/07/2024

Dear clients, how is it mid-July already?! After what has turned out to be quite a hectic year, I will be taking much needed leave for a week from Sunday July 21st until the 28th. Alex will be able to help with any phone or email inquiries or bookings during our normal office hours, but if you have an after hours emergency please call another local vet or Roseworthy Veterinary Hospital on 8313 1999.

Please note Alex will be working off-site so if you think you may need any medication refills or supplements can you please contact us tomorrow, THURSDAY July 18th to get these dispensed before the weekend.

We are hoping to have some very exciting news to share with you when I get back.... so stay tuned ๐Ÿ˜

Sorry for the late notice, but we've had A LOT going on here and next thing I know, I'm sitting on a plane realising I haven't kept you in the loop! Well first thing's first; I'm on my way to Toothfest 2023 ๐Ÿฆท, a dedicated equine veterinary dentistry conference, to learn from some of the leading experts and pioneers in their fields. By now most of you would be aware of just how passionate I am about improving your horses' dental health, and with it both welfare and performance. And so I'm REALLY excited about this opportunity to continue developing my knowledge and skill set among such a high calibre of specialists (in a very nerdy way!! ๐Ÿค“). It does mean I'll be away and unavailable to handle any urgent cases until August 10th (sorry!).

Which leads me to the next thing; we have a new part time assistant at the clinic at last, yay!! ๐ŸŽ‰ We will officially introduce the lovely Erin when I'm back, but in the meantime, she will be manning the office on her own while I'm away on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am-12pm. So if you have any inquiries or wish to make a booking for when I return, please do not hesitate to give her a call. I've really thrown her in the deep end (timing could have possibly been a bit better haha!) so please make her feel welcome and be patient with her as she learns the ropes.

More big news to come.... but in the meantime keep warm, keep dry, and for our breeders out there keep those mares' legs crossed till I'm back ;)

Dear clients, after a fantastic but slightly longer than normal breed season I am taking a few days leave and will be away this weekend. The clinic will be closed from Friday March 3rd until Tuesday March 7th inclusive. For any emergencies please contact another local vet or the Equine Health and Production Centre at Roseworthy Uni.

๐Ÿด๐ŸดCHECK THIS OUT!!๐Ÿด๐Ÿด

Something pretty awesome is going to be happening down at Victor Harbor THIS Friday, December 2nd, at 6pm.

As some of you may know, Brooke enjoys lifting heavy weights in her spare time but it doesn't stop just there. She also does a bit of Strongman training too!!

On Friday, she will be pulling at least one of the Horse Drawn Tram carriages down at Victor Harbor to help raise money and awareness for Lincoln Park Horse and Human Rehabilitation Centre.

This isn't something that has been done before and we are super excited to see how she goes (and how many she can actually pull!)

Get behind her, it should be a fantastic event!

๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿด Does your animal actually need de-worming? ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿด

One of the most useful tools in a parasite control program is performing faecal egg counts to see if your horse or farm animal has a worm burden and requires anthelmintic treatment. We have moved away from blanket deworming with the gold standard now being to run faecal egg counts (FEC) to determine if deworming is really necessary.

By performing FECs, we can determine the level of infection present (if any) and devise a deworming protocol specific for your animal or farm. It is also essential for monitoring the effectiveness of the treatment being used by testing samples again 2-3 weeks after deworming.

Unfortunately, we are beginning to experience resistance to the common deworming compounds we have available which will only get worse if we donโ€™t change our ways.

What is causing parasite resistance to occur?
- High frequency of deworming
- Under-dosing
- Using anthelmintics that are ineffective against the parasite burden present
- Overgrazing/overstocking or poor pasture management

What can you do?
- TEST BEFORE DEWORMING
- Only give anthelmintics if the results suggest it is necessary
- Keep paddocks clean and free from manure
- Rest paddocks through paddock rotation
- Dose accurately according to bodyweight
- Use the right product at the right time

Whatโ€™s involved with a FEC?
Collect 2-3 manure balls (or a small handful) of fresh manure in a zip lock bag, remove the excess air and refrigerate until you can bring it into the clinic. Samples must be dropped off by 4pm on Wednesday afternoons. We recommend collecting the samples no more than 3 days prior to submission for testing.

If you have further questions about this topic, please donโ€™t hesitate to give us a call!

๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป Spring has sprung ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป
(although it certainly doesnโ€™t feel like it with this weather!!)

Weโ€™ve already had some foals hit the ground with many more still to come. This is a little reminder to make sure that you are giving the mare and foal the best chance for success with the following:
- Ensure your mare gets a 2in1 Tetanus & Strangles booster 4 โ€“ 6 weeks prior to foaling
- Does your mare need her caslick opened?
- Do you have a good quality torch/headlight to check pre/post foaling?
- Do you have a foaling alarm?
- Do you have a plan if things donโ€™t go as they should?
- Do you have your foaling kit ready to go? (and our number saved in your phone)

We recommend a neonatal check within 12-24 hours after every foaling (sooner if something doesn't seem right) to examine the health of the mare and foal. At this time, we would also check the foal's IgG levels which is the main antibody transferred via the colostrum to help fight off infection.

For a more in-depth article, check out the link to our website:
https://www.windarrapark.com/articles-info-sheets

We love this time of year - foal spam is also highly encouraged๐Ÿคฃ

Don't forget, we are here if you need us. ๐Ÿ“ž 8388 1200 (all hours)

Happy Foaling!! ๐ŸŽ

**** August Dental Month Special Offer!! ****

As most of our clients already know, we are super passionate about equine welfare and providing top quality dental care. From yearlings just starting to have new teeth erupt, to performance horses needing to be at the top of their game, from broodmares needing to hold weight during lactation and through to geriatrics starting to have more abnormal wear and dental disease. Every horse has teeth, and every horse can benefit from regular dental exams!

Our clients already know the benefits of equine dentistry being performed by a veterinarian. But we want to help even more horses, and what better time than Pet Dental Health Month!

If we have previously performed a dental on your horse(s) and you are SATISFIED with our service and the BENEFIT to your horse, please tell your horsey friends!! We want more clients like YOU who really care for their horsesโ€™ wellbeing and take dental health seriously. For every new client we see via your referral you will get $25 credit applied to your account towards any future professional services! If your referred friend books in 3 horses or more, we will double that and credit your account $50!

Referred clients will have the opportunity to see and understand how our dental exams and treatments differ from the simple โ€˜floatingโ€™ of sharp points. But if thatโ€™s not value enough, we are also offering 50% off a faecal egg count OR 20% discount on vaccination at the time of the dental.

To any existing clients who have used our routine, emergency or reproductive services but have not yet had a chance to see how we perform our dentals, we are offering an introductory 10% discount on your first dental. Satisfied? Refer your friends to accumulate additional credit on your account!

**Bookings must be made in August and subject to availability. All dentals to be performed at Windarra Park unless there are suitable facilities on property. Tโ€™s & Cโ€™s apply.

Happy Tuesday Everyone!!!

A slightly belated welcome to Brooke who started working with us a few months ago. It's nice to be able to put a face to the voice on the end of the phone!

Brooke has had horses for many years, mainly for pleasure riding, with her current horse being a giant 17.1hh grey Irish Draft Mare. She also dabbles in a bit of powerlifting with her next comp coming up next week in Melbourne.

We have had a very busy start the the year and we certainly are yet to slow down! We are very grateful for all of our amazing clients and continued support ๐Ÿ™‚

As we get to the tail end of breed season (literally!) we just wanted to let all our existing and prospective clients know that we are unable to accept any new mares for AI this season. Managing close to 70 mares is very demanding on any one person, and those who know me know that I put my 110% into my patients and will not compromise on my quality of care - even when that means 2am scans and full weekends spent at the clinic. This year was extremely challenging with an increased number of mares for frozen AI, prolonged and unpredictable cycles the first half of the season, delays in transport of chilled and frozen semen, staff changeovers and a few very naughty foals ;) Massive THANK YOU to our loyal regulars as well as many new clients who trusted us with their mare, stallion and foal care this season. Inquires and bookings for next season more than welcome. Pictured stallion Chalani Tempo of Kiahglenn Stud having a celebratory roll after his last collection for the season. We have a few last mares to finish off with then I'll be doing the same!

You may have heard a new voice on the phone this week... We are delighted to introduce Vet Nurse Sarah Nixon who has joined our team at Windarra Park. Sarah has achieved her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, a Bachelor of Science (Animal Science) and has almost completed her Honors project relating to Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome with The University of Adelaide Equine Health and Performance Centre.
Sarah has two horses named Bohdi & Trigger, 3 bullmastiffs named Lexi, Moose and Ellie & too many cats to countโ€ฆ all of whom she truly adores! Donโ€™t bring any rescues to her... she will take them home! She enjoys forest plods with her trusty standardbred while her companion thoroughbred keeps her on her toes (and on the ground)!
Her special interests are dentistry, reproduction and neonatal care. Sarah looks forward to getting to know all our wonderful clients & patients and continue doing what she loves ๐Ÿ˜„
