Please note we use www.parrrotalert.com WHO ARE WE? South West Avian Foster and Rescue is based in Sydney, NSW Australia. We are a rescue and foster service for found tame pet birds- both native and none native. We are also part of the Helping Wings NFP which assists bird owners with emergency vet bills. WHAT DO WE DO? We assist in rehoming for owners who are no longer able to care for their birds, we also rescue neglected and unwanted birds for re-homing as well as try and reunite lost birds with their owners. We make every effort to reunite birds and their owners, often holding onto birds for a year on average before we begin the adoption process. Some birds remain in permanent care with us for various reasons. We check all incoming birds for micro chips and also check all parrotalert lost posts for matches and put them on as found too. We also post on gumtree and check there for lost posts, as well as all the pages, especially those local to where the birds were found REUNITING BIRD AND OWNERS One of the best parts of the rescue is our ability to reunite birds with their owners! Depending on the breed of birds we will hold onto them for 9 months to a year (sometimes even longer) as it is harder to track down bird owners and we want to exhaust all possibilities before we put birds up for adoption. If you think we may have your bird, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Please be aware that some people do make attempts to claim birds that are not theirs, so the more detail you can provide about your birds markings, behaviours and personality the better. We do not charge a fee for reuniting birds and their humans; however a donation would be appreciated. FOSTERING Our Foster Carers are wonderful people who help us care for the birds and assist us in re-homing. Fostering is an unpaid position, with the cost of vet bills covered by us. If you wish to foster a bird please get in touch. Please note that a police check will be required and the process to become a foster carer is quite stringent. A number of our birds have issues due to past neglect and we do not wish to traumatize them again. Should you be successful, you will be matched with a bird that is within your capabilities. ADOPTING First of all, thank-you for considering adopting a bird! Our adoption process is also quite stringent as we want to see our birds go to a home where they can live out the rest of their lives in happiness. Birds are quite high maintenance, and we will support you while you learn how to care for not only birds in general, but also the specific bird you wish to adopt. All birds are vet checked at our expense. It is a condition of adoption that all birds are micro chipped before being released and this cost is included in the adoption fee. If you would like to be considered for adoption, please request an adoption form. If your adoption application is approved, an Adoption Coordinator will undertake a home visit to ensure that your home is properly set up for a rescue bird. If it is not, we will make recommendations on what you will require and work with you to ensure your home is ready for your new family member. Please note that there is an adoption fee when you adopt a bird from us, this fee goes directly towards caring for the other birds that are still in care. HELPING WINGS Helping wings is a not for profit organisation that assists bird owners with emergency vet bills. If you require assistance please head to http://www.helpingwings.org.au/ and complete a form which we will review, and then decide if we can help you. You can also donate to our cause through the website as well. Please note that we are only a small organisation with limited funds and support, and while we would love to help every bird, we can only assist in true emergency situations
