Did you know that by 2 years of age 70% of cats and 80% of dogs have some form of periodontal disease? Making it the most common disease we see in practice! Often pet parents are totally unaware due to a lack of clinical signs (these are not usually present until end-stage disease).

Dental disease can be very painful, impacting the quality of life of our hairy kids. Prevention is certainly better than cure as only early dental disease is reversible.

Our experienced team of nurses are here to educate preventative home care methods and assess whether veterinary intervention is necessary. We offer this service for FREE to our clients so call us on 6156 8666 to book an appointment!

Meet Archie, a super-special boy that recently got himself into a spot of bother!

*WARNING - contains images some viewers may find disturbing*

16-week-old Archie came to us in May after sustaining a nasty fracture to his right front leg. His human mum, Joy, shares: “We had Archie for about a month or two when we saw him leap up for the laundry drying on the line… As he landed, he must have done so awkwardly and we heard his leg snap!”

Radiographs (X-rays) revealed a fracture of both bones in his forearm (radius and ulna), very low and close to his wrist – a very tricky location that requires surgical intervention for any chance of a good outcome. Occasionally, if just one of these bones breaks, the other acts as an internal ‘splint’ and surgery can be avoided. As Archie had done a proper job, our only options were surgical repair or amputation.

Dr Aaron from Small Animal Orthopaedics came to the hospital to perform the delicate surgery, whilst our team handled Archie’s analgesia and anaesthesia needs. Experience and care are essential when young animals undergo anaesthesia and we are fortunate to have skilled, fully trained nurses to support our vets. Surgery and anaesthesia went well for Archie, and the real challenge started once Archie discharged!

His mum, Joy, takes up the story again: “After his surgery his home care was HARD! He is a puppy with so much Jack Russell energy. He had to wear a huge bandage to protect his healing leg (because he identifies as a gazelle and doesn't stay still) and needed to be sedated for each change. We kept him in the laundry room and did our best to stop him from jumping around, which he loves! We gave him lots of toys and sniff walks for enrichment, but unsurprisingly he did need a medication called gabapentin to keep him calm too.”

Archie had his follow up radiographs several weeks after surgery which happily showed signs of good healing. A few more weeks of strict rest and amazing puppy healing powers, he was declared fixed!

Joy says: “Now he is doing amazingly well, you can barely tell he had his injury - the only clue is the surgical scar which you have to look very closely to see. We are so happy, we would strongly recommend Harrisdale vets to anyone and have done to all our friends! Archie loves the team and we were blown away by all their help. A family friend recommended Harrisdale as they had a great experience there, we have kept coming back because we did too!"

Well lets talk about worms....

Do you take your dog into high dog traffic areas?
Do you feed your dog raw food?
Does your dog ingest any grass or dirt?
Do you have kids in the family?

If you answered yes to any of these questions we highly suggest regular worming. Its as easy as a tablet and prevention is better than treatment 🪱

If worms are left untreated, they can result in coat issues, lack of appetite, poor nutrient uptake, poor growth, intestinal upsets and organ damage.
Not to mention you and your children can also become infected and leave you quite unwell.
