2025 has been our most challenging breeding season so far. It was disappointing to have both Ischia and Bonadea slip (each has their own reason for doing so), but mares across the board (not just here) have been late to start cycling this year, and haven't been particularly reliable in how they are doing so.

Disappointingly, Ildi returned a negative after her first cycle with frozen semen, but she has now been inseminated again for a second attempt. Ischia and Bonadea are also now bred, and so we enter 2026 still awaiting our first positive scans.

Better late than never, and hopefully we will have some positive news and foals to look forward to for 2026...

All of our hay is now cut, baled and brought in with only an hour to spare before the next front arrives.

While yields have been good, it has been a nightmare for everyone in SA to actually produce hay with unseasonal amounts of Spring rain that hasn't let up. There won't be much horse hay available this year that hasn't had 20mm+ of rain on it while down.

Because of this, our paddocks produced varying end results from "this will be quite good horse hay" to "cows, I'm really sorry about this". Also, with the small window of opportunity to finish our hay rather than risk losing it as time was not on our side, we have chosen to put the entirety into round bales, and we can always turn a few of those into small squares at a later late.

Unfortunately, we will not be offering any hay for sale this year and we will probably not be the only ones. We would encourage horse owners to buy up their years supply however and wherever possible as the shortages experienced over the last year may continue into next year.

It has begun...
We got enough spring rain to eventually give us quite a good crop! The rain continues though which isn't going to be great for the hay, but are not complaining from the water perspective either.

After going straight into a hard dry summer last year, the longer we can stay green this year, the nicer it feels.

Last day out in the big paddock for Ischia and Bonadea before relocating to the foaling paddock. Ischia is still holding off... that forecast 10mm of rain keeps getting moved back and she is adjusting accordingly.

These are long overdue (after a false start a couple of years ago), but we have finally put the next bank of day yards in, giving us a total of five!

They are part of a much bigger ongoing project but will be a welcome addition for training, clinics, farrier visits and as a local evacuation point.

Quick and easy access from the road for floats and trucks.

Hopefully the trees will survive this time! 🤞🌧

Our hay paddock... looking much more promising this year. Not perfect, and still another season or two of TLC needed to get it back to what it was, but it's looking okay.
