🍃During a professional development training last weekend, with the amazing team at Equine Assisted Therapy Australia RTO no:41482, I had a glimmer moment that left a lasting impression on me.

As part of the training, we took turns stepping into the roles of both therapist and client, giving us the opportunity to explore therapeutic approaches from both perspectives. One of the experiential activities invited deep reflection, and it was during this session that I experienced something profound.

As I reflected on the idea of contentment and satisfaction, I began questioning myself. Was I, perhaps unknowingly, chasing perfection? And if so, why, when perfection doesn’t even exist? In the midst of this thought process, I did what I often do: I looked up to check in with the horses. That’s when I saw two of them grooming each other.

Their connection was a quiet, unspoken agreement, a safe and beautiful expression of trust and mutual understanding. It was as though they were reminding each other, “I see you, and you matter.” In that moment, it struck me: this was the essence of contentment and satisfaction. These horses weren’t striving for anything beyond what they already had; they were fully present, meeting their needs and connecting with one another.

This simple act of grooming carried a humbling lesson. It reminded me that contentment and satisfaction don’t have to be grand or extraordinary. They can be found in the smallest of moments, in the everyday acts of connection, if only we pause long enough to notice them. I realised that we can experience a sense of fullness and richness in life by simply being present, tuning into our internal state, and appreciating the beauty around us.

I paused the session to take a photo, wanting to capture this moment, not just to remember it visually, but to hold onto the feeling it gave me. Watching the horses, I felt contentment and satisfaction in its purest form.

🐴Equine-assisted therapy has a way of creating these moments of clarity and connection. Horses, in their authenticity and simplicity, remind us of what it means to truly be. Through their actions, they teach us to slow down, to notice, and to embrace what is already here. For me, this glimmer moment was more than a therapeutic exercise; it was a humbling reminder that contentment and satisfaction are available to us every day, if we choose to pay attention. 🍃

🍃Why Horses & Nature are Part of our Counselling Approach🍃

Traditional room-based therapy works for many, but I understand it’s not for everyone. Opening up can feel intimidating, whether due to fear of judgement, past experiences of shame, or the belief that vulnerability is a weakness. These feelings are valid and don’t just disappear overnight.

That’s why I’ve integrated horses into my therapeutic approach. Horses don’t judge, criticise, or carry expectations. They meet you where you are, offering a sense of presence and connection. Their authenticity invites you to be present as well, without the need for the “right” words or explanations.

Research supports the benefits of this approach. Equine-assisted therapy has been shown to improve emotional well-being and reduce behavioural problems, particularly in adolescents facing mental health challenges. Additionally, interacting with horses can lower blood pressure, alleviate stress, and reduce symptoms of anxiety.

The natural setting further enhances the therapeutic experience. Spending time outdoors has been linked to improved mood, reduced stress, and better mental health outcomes. Exposure to green spaces can decrease anxiety and promote relaxation, making it easier to engage in the therapeutic process.

The truth is, the work isn’t about me as your counsellor or the horses, it’s about you. It’s your decision to show up, your willingness to face discomfort, and your courage to explore what’s holding you back. I’m here to walk beside you, offering guidance and support. Your equine partner is there too; a non-judgmental presence reflecting your feelings and providing space for you to step into your own strength.

This process isn’t about erasing scars or “fixing” pain. It’s about moving forward with self-compassion, understanding your experiences, and learning to navigate life differently. The hardest part, the openness and willingness is where the real work happens. That’s all you!

As Brené Brown wisely said, “Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.”

If traditional therapy hasn’t felt right for you or expressing yourself is a struggle, this might be a space worth exploring. The journey is yours, and it begins with your decision to take that step.

🌿 What If You Could Truly Understand Your Responses? 🌿

Have you ever wondered why you react the way you do in certain situations? Maybe there’s a moment when your heart races, or you feel like shutting down, or you struggle to find your words. These responses aren’t random, they’re your nervous system at work, doing its best to protect you.

What if we could take a closer look at these patterns together? By understanding where these responses come from, we can uncover their roots, begin to regulate, and approach ourselves with compassion and curiosity rather than judgment.

In my counseling approach, I incorporate tools like Polyvagal Theory to help clients make sense of their experiences. It’s not just about managing symptoms, it’s about creating a deeper understanding of the nervous system and opening the door to connection, nurturing, and growth.

Imagine stepping into a space where it’s safe to be curious about your journey. A space where small, meaningful steps can lead to big changes.

🍃As the year comes to a close, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has connected with my practice throughout 2024. Whether it was through social media, my website, or even a simple message sparked by curiosity about equine-assisted therapy, your support has meant the world to me.

Thank you 🙏

To end the year, I’d like to share a special photo of Willow and her human, my daughter. For those familiar with my journey to becoming a licensed and registered equine-assisted mental health practitioner, you’ll know it all began with these two.

In July, we said a heartbreaking goodbye to Willow, just a week before returning home to Sydney from Tasmania. I’m deeply grateful I was able to bring her ashes back for my daughter, preserving the memories they shared from childhood to young adulthood. Willow’s spirit and presence continue to inspire me every single day. 🌈

As we look forward to 2025, I’m excited to share some exciting new areas, including:

🍃Tailored programs and workshops for youth.

🍃The official launch of our spring camp journey.

🍃A mix of big and small projects I can’t wait to unveil.

🍃Expanding my services to include groundwork in natural horsemanship; an area I’m deeply passionate about.

I’m also eager to continue learning from professionals I admire, growing under their guidance, and refining my practice in meaningful ways has truly been a privilege.

🙌Wishing you all a safe and joyful New Year! Thank you for being part of this journey.

🍃I can’t wait to see what we’ll create together in 2025.🍃

🍃Anyone who works with horses knows that fly season is, to say the least, the most challenging part of working in a nature-based setting. 🪰 That’s why we use fly masks on our horses; not just for their comfort, but also, in my herd’s case, to help prevent irritating puffy eyes caused by flies.

Today, we took it a step further and trialed fly nets over our own helmets and hats… and it worked! Looks like the humans are finally catching on. 😉🐴

🎄As we approach the end of 2024, I want to take a moment not only to reflect on the journey we’ve all been part of but also to wish you all Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The holiday season can look different for everyone. Wherever you find yourself, I hope you’re able to take this time in a way that feels meaningful for you.

Think about everything you’ve experienced this year; the lessons you’ve learned, the growth you’ve embraced, and the connections you’ve made with people, animals, environments, and experiences that have shaped your journey. Reflect on the individuals who have crossed your path, the places and decisions that have supported you, and even the attachments you’ve lost or chosen to let go of.

Carry gratitude for everything that has served its purpose, and trust in the unfolding path ahead. Change can be challenging, but life is a constant progression, creating space for new opportunities, connections, and moments to thrive.

As we prepare to step into 2025, remember that life is a path always unfolding. Be gentle with yourself as you navigate it. Stay curious, compassionate, open your heart and mind to the possibilities ahead. My herd of horses reminds me daily of the beauty in patience, presence, and connection.
I hope you find moments to embrace those qualities too as you move forward.

🎄Merry Christmas and Happy New Year🎄

🍃Words often deceive, acting as masks for our subconscious, covering up feelings and desires that we may not have fully explored or embraced.

🍃They are protective layers that prevent us from being vulnerable, which in turn suppresses our courage and authenticity. In contrast, energy and intuition are what speak our true language, untouched by the distractions of our senses. They are pure expressions of our deepest intentions and emotions, and they carry no deceit. When we share space with horses, it is this energy, our unspoken intention that they truly attune to.

🍃Horses sense what words cannot express, tuning into the authentic presence we project. They respond not to the masks we wear or the shields we carry, but to the truth we embody in the space we share with them.

🍃Do you give yourself the same compassion, empathy, and forgiveness that you so freely offer to others?

This question stayed with me after listening to a recent podcast. It stirred something deep inside, making me reflect not only on my bond with my horses but on how often I neglect to nurture myself the way I nurture them.

Horses (or any animals, really) teach us so much about living in the moment, resilience, and unconditional love. They don’t dwell on mistakes or the past. Instead, they return to balance and continue living fully. What would life feel like if we did the same?

I’ve shared my thoughts in a new blog where I explore this idea further—how animals anchor us, how we can honour ourselves, and why self-compassion is essential.

🍃Testimonial🍃

“My daughter has been attending Brumby’s for several months.

In this time, Pari has shown a high level of dedication to planning her appointments, engaging her, and being highly flexible to ensure she feels comfortable and in control.

She has been keen to attend every therapy session, which is fantastic as she often doesn’t enjoy participating in other forms of therapy.

From the very beginning, my daughter felt comfortable enough to talk to Pari, allowing me to step away from the session — something that rarely happens with other appointments.

I commend Pari for her professionalism and dedication to her work.”

🍃Mindful grooming is one of our core activities in equine-assisted therapy, offering clients a unique opportunity to engage with their equine partner in a calm and intentional way.

🍃Grounded in principles of Polyvagal Theory, this practice supports nervous system regulation while fostering a deep connection and bond with another mammal. It invites clients to pay attention to their equine partner’s needs and wants, listening to their subtle facial expressions and body language—a process of attunement that communicates through our shared nervous systems.

🍃This dynamic reflection between horse and human, grounded in conscious awareness, creates a profound sense of connection. It unfolds in a safe, forgiving, and non-judgemental space, allowing clients to experience trust, emotional regulation, and authentic relationship on a whole new level.
