Here I was this morning, minding my own business, and BOOM! Next thing I know Iโm getting triggered by a post in a breed specific group (I should know better ๐
).
The post was about a Stafford being clingy, crying when the owner goes out etc. That, I wasnโt triggered by. It was the amount of comments normalising โstage 5 clingersโ because, wait for it, โitโs a BREED TRAITโ. And I tried to forget it, I tried to consult my higher being and do some breath work ๐
, but hours later Iโm still thinking about it, so here we are.
โผ๏ธ So letโs be clear:
There are certain breeds that bond hard to their human, Staffords are a prime example of this. However, this shouldnโt replace healthy independence. And being unconfident and anxious is not โbreed traitโ.
If I cried every time Rob left the house, or the room for that matter, Iโd be considered to have an unhealthy attachment and I would need to seek professional help to rectify. It would be the same as me following him around 24/7 - again, not healthy.
โ
Do your dog a solid by building their independence and confidence. A sooky dog is not cute, itโs unhealthy.
A dog in that state is stressed. Prolonged stress affects the longevity of our dog.
This TED- Ed video explains how sustained periods of chronic stress can affect our brain. In fact, chronic stress can actually make it more challenging to learn and remember things.
๐๐ฝ Itโs not too uncommon to see highly stressed dogs make poor decisions. Long term stress can reduce the size of your dogโs pre frontal cortex, which is the part of the brain that regulates concentration, decision making, judgement and social interactions.

๐ Please donโt be like the Staffy group. Please build healthy independence on your dog.
