Some jumping today! This is our first session of our training plan. Once a week jumping. This time with focus and goals. And a different mindset and training methods. Still lots to learn and work on. But it’s a start and the biggest thing is to accept where you are and go from there.

Have been up to a few things. Training wise I’ve been working with my one and only ridden horse monster at this stage as most of you are aware Marzy is retired and has been full time retired for a while now. Monster is in and out of work due to work commitments and ongoing life events.

Lately have really been focusing on monsters knowledge gaps and working towards filling this in.

We will be dragging riders and carts and anything I can get my hands on, I will also be fake falling off and pretend “dragging” as you can never be to prepared for the unexpected. I will also hopefully be clipping him within the next week or two.

We have 2 clinics we’re aiming to attend, one is a library clinic with Josh Knight and the other a cow working clinic in October I believe for Anthony Desearuex and lastly a showjumping even in September.

I love to make my horses well rounded individuals so no matter what they are doing they can strive to being the best they can at that by utilising all walks of life training. True all rounders. I also find taking things from other disciplines gives you almost an advantage in the competition ring.

Monster is definitely a more challenging horse, we have also been working on relaxing our gaits and calm transition and sticking to one speed as this is some to ing he struggles with. We have also been working toward tackless riding though he is his own person and likes to remind me of his free will often by being “naughty” and taking charge rather than listening. So hopefully this will work out with more time and riding.

Let me know how you have been going with your horses in the comments, what’s your next training goal?

100% I’ve always been able to once horses have come to me and been retrained jump on whenever I want and have my horses behave without me having to be weary and cautious. 100% my horses are able to maintain integrity and have a great non eventful ride! Monster on the other hand is very spicy and opinionated but I can still get on after time off with no fuss

22/02/2024

100% my riders know this is very important and we always work on creating a feel with many on the ground exercises to help this connect to!

You Will Fall To Your Level Of Training.

Let's dig into this topic and discuss something that, to me, can make or break our relationship with our horses. Some of you know I had a nearly twelve year career in law enforcement before I went full time with horses. I taught in academies as well as in service personal as well. One if the things that I always was reminded of is that in high stress situations, we always revert to our level of training. If we train poorly we will perform poorly. If we train with a high expectation of ourselves and of our team, then when under stress, we will always perform at a much higher level. It's really that simple, of both human, and I believe, horse psychology as well.
This concept has been instrumental in shaping my thought process on the why and the how I train horses because there are so many similarities between the two.

Whenever I post a video asking a horse to cross something the horse doesn't want to cross, or maybe the horse is scared of, inevitably the comment wagon will get rolling.
The comments will typically fall the line of:
1. Why make them cross?
2. Trust their instincts.
3. Have another horse go first.

1. Why make them cross? I think it's important to look past the obstacle at hand, meaning that each and everything out there is a potential learning/teaching opportunity. If my horse doesn't want to cross something either out of fear or something else, I now have an opportunity to model good leadership to my horse, as I show them I will not stear them wrong. If I always allow them to avoid the momentary uncomfortable I will do them a disservice. This point also morphs us into answering #2.

2. Trust their instincts. Although this point can be beneficial to do, at times it can also cause problems. Ever been looking for stray cows? A horse will usually find them before a human will. However, I've also seen a horse spook at a mouse, or their own shadow, so to just totally trust their, flee from everything and ask questions later, instinct isn't without flaw either. Trust is built, maybe better, it's earned and it is a two way street.

3. Let another horse go first. This can be very beneficial, and I will, at times, do that. However, at some point a horse has to learn to trust our guidance and be independent from other horses. The same people that ride with, a, let another horse lead mentality miss an opportunity to build trust. Plus, if you are ever going to ride alone, how well will this plan work?

So what I am attempting to do everytime I cross that stream, bridge, tarp etc. is to learn to work through and process versus flee and run. To think about solving the problem as we work together towards solution. The biggest "high" moments I've had with horses is when we worked together as a team and concurred the troubling moments in life together.

If we ask nothing from our horse, or ourselves; we shouldn't be surprised when we get it.

Another great video with handy tips on introduction to flags. Again everything I do when introducing horses to flags

This is a good example of what I do also. Follow the feel, build the intensity until you ge the response and gradually drop the intesity down once the horse creates a better understanding of what’s being asked. One must always start with what the horse already knows and build on this. Work with the horse you have today

Anthony Desreaux from Reata Ranch horsemanship, talks about ‘feel’ and how important feel is while developing quality communication with your horse.

Super excited to attend this clinic! Unfortunately I won’t be able to take a horse or go for the full clinic but I will be fence sitting on the first day and then another clinic 40 mins down the road for animal communication and healing. This bloke is the closest you’ll get to riding with the famous Buck Brannaman. He’s hosting another clinic later in the year closer to my hometown that I’m hoping I’ll be able to have a stock saddle for to attend with my horse!

09/02/2024

I am excited to be investing more time, energy and money into my development. I will be attending a liberty workshop next weekend toward Melbourne and then an animal healing and communication course first weekend of march. 🙂 so fair I’ve completed my pranic healing level 1, my animal communication basic and advanced and do my healing practise each night. Onwards and upwards and expansions

04/02/2024

Due to current circumstances I do only take one horse at a time in a shared paddock to break or train . I offer mostly on the go services or absent healing/communication. Please enquire within. Cases treated as individuals.

I forgot to post on my page. MONEE (hezacruiser) plodding around grade 4 open for the first time. First xc course, first dressage but he has a few freshmen’s up his sleeve. He was a little naughty and sick of it as he didn’t know what was coming and how much he’d enjoy. I forgot part of the dressage test (my bad!) and he knocked one pole in showjumping (my bad again!) and I didn’t get to walk the xc course (my bad, ran out of time) that’s what happens doing these by yourself. Great learning experience for both and he really was a brilliant boy.
