Our latest intake is just too cute not to share. Meet Mindy, our latest pound puppy. She's a sixteen week old mastiff cross (no, we don't know what she's crossed with) and it's anticipated she will be a large girl once she's grown up. She's utterly adorable and eager to please

Ash is a timid but sweet natured girl who simply needs a little time to radiate her warmth and affection. She requires a patient and understanding owner or family to guide her through a gentle transition. Ash is also somewhat skittish around sudden movements, but with time, love and patience, we are confident she will blossom into a fearless companion. Ash is best suited to a home with no small children, as she is easily startled by high pitched noises. While Ash enjoys the company of other dogs, she does require careful management around food. If you have the compassion and dedication to empower Ash to become a confident and integral part of the family, please make an enquiry today!

We had this gorgeous boy come in before Christmas.

Now this is a cautionary tale for those who think buying a pet off Gumtree is a good idea.

Bey here was purchased off gumtree and once his owners had had him a couple of weeks they determined that something wasn't right.

His vet said he had some kidney issues but they weren't sure what.

With one of his owners already caring for an unwell family member they approached us to take Bey on, which we did with no hesitation.

Upon taking him to our special vet Dr Sinéad (who was our Loki's personal vet) and after her running a series of tests and ultrasounds it was determined that Bey has renal dysplasia which has no cure but is managed in the palliative sense.

This gorgeous boy has such a sweet and gentle nature and the medication and diet he is on is definitely making him feel better in himself.

Despite and because of knowing he is palliative, our superstar vet and friend Sinead had no hesitation in putting her hand up to giving Bey the best life possible!!

We could not have asked for a better outcome for Bey (well unless there was a cure for renal dysplasia of course).

Thank you Dr Sinéad for having a heart of gold and a supportive family.

Very remiss of us not to do a big thank you post to the crew over at Animal Rescues Appeal who once again gifted us a lovely package for Christmas with treats for the dogs, cats and even a few for some of the two legged crew! The squish squad couldn't wait to poke their little faces in to rummage through

If you are looking at giving back this year and love animals then we need you!

NEAST is 💯 volunteer run and we are in need of people to come help us care for the animals.

We are looking for regular volunteers who can come out for a couple of hours a week to help clean the cattery and/or walk the dogs in our care.

Of course it does involve playing with cats and kittens, but 90% of our volunteers time is spent cleaning!

Litter trays, p**p, vacuuming, scrubbing down walls and benches, etc. It's very hands on. If you're afraid of cat poo/wee then this is not for you - but we promise the kitty cuddles after is worth it!

You will need to be physically fit as there is lots of bending and lifting.

If you're more if a dog person then being physically strong to be able to walk dogs and negotiate farm gates is a must and dog experience essential.

Hours are in the morning, generally 9-11 so if you're keen to make a difference and want to help pop us a message.

Time for the ubiquitous New Years post!
2024 has been a big year for NEAST with plenty of change. We have welcomed new permanent residents such Rory (a pound puppy with neurological issues) and the Squish Squad (two of which have health issues we’re still trying to get to the bottom of) and sadly we have farewelled some of our four legged NEAST team members, the most well known being our disabled hooligan Loki.
We commenced our Pound Puppy Program rescuing dogs/puppies from high kill shelters in the mainland and we have also begun rehoming Tassie ex racing greyhounds. And who could forget Doodlemania, when we proudly supported the RSPCA Tasmania team by taking on some of the poodle x lab doggos from notorious breeding facility here in Tasmania. And of course, we continued our tireless work with cats and kittens, rescuing and rehoming many throughout 2024.
It would be remiss of us not to thank our amazing team members, foster carers, volunteers, vets, donors, adopters… the list is endless. As we always say – we can’t do what we do at NEAST without you guys behind us in our corner. You guys are the VIP. Those who show up for us rain, hail or shine, on the good days and the bad days. Who support us financially or otherwise, and are as emotionally involved as we are. Animal rescue is HARD and it takes some serious backbone to be involved.
So on to 2025! Watch this space – we have some exciting projects coming up that we can’t wait to share with you! We look forward to you guys joining us going forward, and hope you’re as excited as we are!
If you’re keen to continue to support us financially into 2025 and onwards, you can do so via paypal or bank deposit – either one off or regular donations, we appreciate it all x

We had Ash come to us before Christmas.

Unfortunately she had a large fluidy mass on her neck so while she was desexed it was drained and checked.

It turned out to be a cyst in her saliva gland which was drained and she was given antibiotics.

It rapidly filled up so Ash went back to have it drained, scraped and tied off so it doesn't return as well as a drain in to help it stay empty while it heals.

Ash has a very sweet nature despite being timid and easily startled.

Once she knows you Ash is like a cling on needing assurance and affection.

Ash will require a patient home where her family will help her feel relaxed and comfortable as el as continuing her lead training as she is very nervous on a lead and had a tendency to freeze.

We've been told that Ash resource guards but we've not seen that.

However to be on the safe side if she goes to a home with another dog we feel it best to feed seperate from each other .

Ash isn't ready for adoption just yet as she is still healing from her recent surgery but we are happy to take expressions of interest.

Our Story

North East Animal Sanctuary Tasmania is a non profit organization and registered charity (ABN 27131439521) that is privately run by a small group of like-minded animal lovers who have identified a gap in the animal welfare section within North East Tasmania, and have come together to rescue and re-home domestic pets in need.

NEAST is a No Kill organization We care for these animals in our own homes and NEAST HQ remains a place where we quarantine our animals before they get vaccinated and go into foster care. NEAST HQ also accommodates and cares for many of the animals that come in to the sanctuaries care.

We strive to educate owners and potential owners on animal health and maintenance and aim to reduce the number of unwanted litters within the area via education and a strict in house policy on neutering. Long term we would also like to implement programs that can help people keep their pets, whether it's to secure their yard better, training for their animal or to help them find the right help if they are in difficult family situations
