The North East Animal Sanctuary Tasmania not only rescue and re-home domestic pets in need, but provide a forever home to those animals who most people consider unhomable due to age, health or behaviour. We strive to educate owners/potential owners on animal health and maintenance, and are working to reduce the number of unwanted domestic pets within the Dorset and Break O Day municipalities via e

ducation, a strict in house policy on neutering and collaboration with other groups and rescues. Long term we are working towards implementing programs to help people keep their pets, whether it's to secure their yard better, training for their animal or to help them find the right help if they are in difficult family situations. Please consider donating, or becoming a regular donor to help us to continue saving lives. Account name: NORTH EAST ANIMAL SANCTUARY INC

We hope everyone is keeping safe and that you've not sustained too much damage.

We and all the animals are safe if a little wet footed.

We had a big tree come down over the driveway at HQ as well as flooding in the kittery and the palace at HQ2.

Thanks to the Tasmania SES for coming to help with this giant and to our vollies and friends for helping move this big boy from our driveway.

If you're trying to contact us please be patient while we continue the clean up process.

We will get back to people once we've caught our breath.

Stay safe out there!!

Whoo, this weather! We hope all of our supporters are keeping safe and have ensured their loved ones - both human and otherwise - are also safe and secure. Please make sure your little and large pets (and people!) are secure and safe, with adequate shelter and be aware that this weather could do anything at this point. It's really starting to blow again at NEAST HQ and NEAST HQ2, tho it hasn't really stopped all day. We've secured all the animals and ourselves, wish us luck and we'll see you on the other side....

PS we may or may not have phones after this so if you are trying to reach us, understand that we mightn't be able to return calls.

Introducing the squish squad: Winston (ginger and white Exotic Shorthair), Lana (torti Persian, mama of Winnie and Murph) and Murphy (blue and white Persian).

Oh what a trio. So pretty yet so complex!

Winstons issues are all up the front - he has an ongoing skin issue on his face and some Persian typical issues with his eyes where his tear ducts don't drain properly and create problems in the creases between his eyes and nose. We are presently treating the skin issue as an allergy and have transitioned him onto a very specific diet to see if we can resolve this.

Whereas Lanas problems are all up the back - she has irritable bowel issues. (Yep. Runny bum flare ups and a Persian coat. Good times) Lana is also being managed with a strict diet and supplements at present, and is putting on some weight which is lovely.

And Murphy... the most medically interesting of them all! Murphy has the occasional tummy flare up themselves, and is managed the same way as their mum Lana. Murphys most interesting factor? They're intersex. We are still finding out if this is something we need to factor into Murph's ongoing management...

The Squish Squads ongoing monthly costs including food, supplements, medication, litter average at around $215 per month. If you or your business are keen to come on board and help us help Poppy by sponsoring her as either a part or sole sponsor please contact us!

It's going to get windy and wild out there folks, statewide! Please take a little time today to prepare for the upcoming weather by following some handy advice from the SES. Secure all the flappy things (it is trampoline migration season!), take lots of care with your outside pets (ideally where you can, make them inside pets!) esp the wee ones like rabbits and guinea pigs in hutches that can blow over, maybe make sure your neighbours are aware so they can prepare too and don't park your cars under trees if you can avoid it. And remember - your power may not be reconnected as efficiently as usual right now, so prepare for lengthy outages.

Tasmania SES is encouraging people to be prepared and informed with the potential for damaging and locally destructive winds to hit the state this week.

🍃 The severe weather is expected to develop early Tuesday morning and may continue throughout the week.

💨 The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Weather Warning for statewide damaging winds, with the potential for locally destructive winds.

🎐 Wind gusts around 100 km/h are possible in the north, with gusts around 110 km forecast for the rest of the state.

⬆️ From Tuesday morning wind gusts are likely to reach around 125 km/h in elevated terrain and parts of the east coast between Swansea and Orford, before easing later in the evening.

👀 Although winds may ease at times, we encourage the community to remain vigilant, as the wind and developing rain conditions will likely continue throughout this week.

🌳 The combination of high soil moisture and damaging to destructive wind speeds increases the chances of trees being brought down.

💧 The Bureau has also issued a Flood Watch for the Tamar, Derwent, Huon, Forth and Mersey rivers, and parts of the north-west coast.

🌧️ We will be monitoring the rain levels, with the possibility of widespread minor flooding due to catchments across Tasmania being relatively wet due to recent rainfall.

🚨 As always, our dedicated SES volunteer crews will be available to support the community if and where needed, however, we’re urging all Tasmanians to monitor the conditions and prepare appropriately.

Our sweet girls Daisy and Rosie had their vet work done today including dentals which involved some extractions. They had blood work done to ensure that they have no underlying health issues.

Both girls received a clean bill of health and now we just need to find them a loving home together!!

Time for another REHOME ASSIST! Today, meet HUGO, a chonky pocket rocket with all the love to give🩷

Hugo is a Spaniel Hound X and is 4.5 years old, weighing roughly 30kg. Hugo is crate trained, knows how to sit, lay down, give some knuckles and wait for his food.

Typical of the hound types, he doesn't have the best recall and due to his high hunting drive he would be best suited in a home with no small livestock such as birds, chickens or rabbits.

Hugo gets along great with humans and other dogs, but he can just become a wee bit too boisterous at times. Hugo has had no exposure to small children and because of this, plus how boisterous he can be his best suited to a home without little kids - he tends to get excited and zoom around at times!

Hugo does require daily medication for anxiety + his eyes, but this is pretty straightforward.

He adores his humans and will need someone who will make sure he's getting all of his hound energy needs met: exercise, mental stimulation and a decent sized yard. He doesn't enjoy being left outside for long periods of time on his own.

Hugos owners hope there is someone out there who could love Hugo as much as they do and can provide him his needs. He will be your most loyal companion and the absolute best of friend. 🐕🩷

***Please note: as a rehome assist, NEAST are simply here to put you into contact with Hugos owner. We have not done any health checks etc and can not make any guarantees.

Our latest intake of Labradoodles.

***Please note that we have already locked down homes for these 6.***

This was taken the day they arrived and we are currently working through grooming them and getting health checks and vet work done before they head to their carefully selected homes.

We have posted in the comments the state of some of the coats we are seeing 😞

I just want to share what our lovely foster carer (and Doodle mum to Tuhi) has to say as it is so true.

Part of the reason we're sharing the stories of these dogs & collecting photographic, medical, social & psychological evidence is because the laws & penalties we currently have don't reflect what people expect in society today. We want people to be more aware regarding our responsibility as humans for animal welfare & to better understand what appropriate care & responsibility look like from people towards animals.

The RSPCA, welfare organisations, rescues & shelters want to do so much more in ways that better reflect our current values. This is going to require significant changes in legislation so there are more significant penalties for animal cruelty & mismanagement - particularly for deliberate situations like this one.

Legally, the RSPCA have achieved the best outcome possible under current legislation. With these opportunities to share our concerns & voice them, we can assist animal welfare groups to lobby for more appropriate laws & penalties. 💪🏻💪🏻

We can use this horrid situation to help focus our concern & sign petitions, write letters to local & state government, & speak to our parliamentary representatives in person, asking for change & continuing to follow up until it happens. With this kind of focussed response, hopefully we won't see another situation like this oodle-dog farm again, & if we do, hopefully we will have given the RSPCA more appropriate authority to charge those involved & new laws that mean the courts can implement much more appropriate penalties & consequences. 💛💛

Our Story

North East Animal Sanctuary Tasmania is a non profit organization and registered charity (ABN 27131439521) that is privately run by a small group of like-minded animal lovers who have identified a gap in the animal welfare section within North East Tasmania, and have come together to rescue and re-home domestic pets in need.

NEAST is a No Kill organization We care for these animals in our own homes and NEAST HQ remains a place where we quarantine our animals before they get vaccinated and go into foster care. NEAST HQ also accommodates and cares for many of the animals that come in to the sanctuaries care.

We strive to educate owners and potential owners on animal health and maintenance and aim to reduce the number of unwanted litters within the area via education and a strict in house policy on neutering. Long term we would also like to implement programs that can help people keep their pets, whether it's to secure their yard better, training for their animal or to help them find the right help if they are in difficult family situations
