Is your cat or dog on tick prevention? 📣

Ixodes holocyclus, commonly known as the Australian paralysis tick, is one of about 75 species in the Australian tick fauna. Tick paralysis is caused by the exposure to a neurotoxin released by tick salivary glands during a bite. Tick paralysis is a serious and a potentially fatal condition that requires urgent veterinary attention. It’s crucial to be able to identify the symptoms so you can seek emergency help for your pet.

Clinical signs usually occur within 3 – 5 days of attachment, depending on the type of tick involved.

Symptoms of tick paralysis may include:
◾️ Loss of coordination in the back legs (wobbliness)
◾️ Difficulty sitting
◾️ Unable to move or rise from a lying position
◾️ Laboured or rapid breathing, grunting noises and/or abdominal heaving
◾️ Change or loss of bark
◾️ Coughing
◾️ Gagging and vomiting
◾️ Loss of appetite
◾️ Inability to blink

If you notice any signs of tick paralysis in your cat or dog, it is important to seek veterinary attention immediately. The sooner an affected pet is brought in for treatment, the more effective the treatment can be. Recovery is a slow process and takes on average between two and nine days. Affected animals require supportive care including oxygen, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, anti-nausea medication, bladder expression and lubrication of the eyes.

Tick preventative products are available. There are several methods to help prevent your pet from contracting a paralysis tick, which should be administered all year-round.

◾️ Routinely administer tick preventatives to your cats and dogs as they may be susceptible to tick paralysis, even if they have suffered from it before.
◾️ Use the most effective product for your pet’s lifestyle, for example, if your pet is regularly bathed or goes swimming, avoid using a product that needs to be spread on the coat.
◾️ Ensure the preventative medication you are using offers protection against paralysis ticks.
◾️ Read the label instructions and administer accordingly i.e. the correct dose for your pet‘s weight at the appropriate dosing interval (e.g. monthly)
◾️ If you are travelling to a known tick area, seek veterinary advice regarding when you need to administer the tick preventative prior to departure, and once you return.
◾️ Have your pet’s coat clipped short to make locating ticks easier during summer months.

Do I really need to give my dog heartworm prevention. We say yes!

Meet Tunza! Tunza is a 6-year-old Smithfield cross. He was recently adopted and his owner brought him into the clinic for a health check. It was found Tunza wasn't receiving any preventative treatment for heartworm so we performed a heartworm test and unfortunately found Tunza was positive.
Treatment takes at least 12 months and often not without complications. Tunza had a minor stumble in his treatment at the beginning but earlier this month he was given the all clear and returned a negative test. Congratulations Tunza! ❤❤❤

🐾 In the last two years Passionate Paws has treated 6 patients with heartworm disease. Prevention of heartworm is easy and inexpensive. Treatment is difficult, expensive, and often results in disastrous side effects, including death. Prevention is always better than cure!

🐾 Did you know heartworm is spread by mosquitoes? When an infected mosquito bites your pet it injects larva (known as microfilaria) into the blood. In dogs, these microfilariae make their way to the heart and lungs, where they mature and grow. This insect-borne method of spreading is the reason why heartworm is more prevalent in tropical and warmer environments.

🐾 Heartworm prevention is available and easy to do! A heartworm injection once a year covers your dog for a full 12 months against heartworm. Alternatively, monthly all in one products that combine heartworm control, flea, tick, and intestinal worming protection are an easy way to ensure all bases are covered.

Cats can become sexually mature as young as 4 months of age so your kitten could have kittens!! 😿 Desexing prevents your female cat from developing pyometra, a potentially fatal infection of the uterus. It helps reduce the urge for your male cats to roam minimizing the risk of fighting, traffic injures and helps reduce the overwhelming number of kittens and cats in rescues.

😢 Such a sad face Paddington!

He came and saw our emergency vet, Dr Emma, recently with vomiting.

Vomiting by pets is not normal but is quite common. In most cases, one-off vomiting is just an attempt to eject something they have eaten and is normal in even the healthiest pets. Continuous vomiting, however, is not normal.

It is important to monitor your pets’ symptoms once they have vomited to make sure they are not ill or have consumed something toxic. It is serious if your pet is:

🐶 Vomiting multiple times within 30-60 minutes.
🐶 Vomiting mucus without presence of food
🐶 Vomiting blood or bloody bile
🐶 Showing other symptoms such as discomfort, pain, diarrhoea or inappetance
🐶 Vomiting water after drinking
🐶 Lethargic after vomiting
🐶 Not interested in their normal meals

Check your pet’s vomit to make sure it is free from blood or toxic material. Blood in the vomit is a sign that your pet is seriously unwell, and they should be taken to a vet immediately.

If your pet is otherwise bright and happy:

🐶 Withhold food for an hour.
🐶 Don’t let them drink large amounts of water. Encourage small regular sips of water.
🐶 After fasting, try a small amount of their normal food. If they vomit, consult a veterinarian.
🐶 If there is no vomiting after this time, continue with small meals every 2-3 hours.
🐶 Gradually increase back to their normal amount over the next 2 days.

A foreign object in the gastrointestinal tract, bacterial or viral infections, hormone disorders such as pancreatitis, kidney disease, or diabetes amongst others can cause serious vomiting. This will not resolve on its own and requires immediate veterinary attention. If vomiting continues, see your vet.
