☀️It’s hot in Hobart !☀️

With the weather heating up for the next few days, we thought we would share some tips to keep our pets cool.

☀️ Have plenty of water sources. You can add some ice blocks to keep water cool on hot days, and even freeze some treats as a fun activity.

☀️Walk your pets in the coolest part of the day, early morning and the evenings. Make sure you test the ground to make sure it isn’t too hot!

☀️Think about the positioning of pocket pets, pet birds and chickens. Making sure their enclosures are in a shady spot with good ventilation.

☀️If your pet has any light coloured patches of skin with minimal fur covering, consider using a pet specific sunscreen.

What other tips do you have for hot weather?

Yoshi the pirate pup 🏴‍☠️🐾

Beautiful Yoshi presented to the clinic with a bulging eyeball and eyelid. Commonly we see this presentation when an abscess forms behind the eye.

When Yoshi didn’t responded to treatment CT imaging was undertaken, and it sadly showed a mass in his eye socket. Yoshi’s mass is likely a osteochondrosarcoma which is a slow growing bone tumour that unfortunately has a chance of coming back even when removed.

The mass was causing an increase of pressure in the eye and therefore discomfort (it was also not functioning properly). Yoshi’s eye was removed and he recovered beautifully! With the eye removed Yoshi is has a new lease on life and is the cutest pirate pup in Hobart!

Sometimes we can’t cure all problems with our patients, but we can definitely make a difference in their quality of life 💙 and currently Yoshi’s is A+! Dogs handle the loss of an eye amazingly well, Yoshi is still able to do all the doggie things that he loves 🥰

💜 Brave Billy 💜

Today was an exciting day at NHVH as it was Billy’s last chemotherapy session!

Last chemo days are always bittersweet. During chemo treatment we get to know and create strong bonds with our patients. Once they have finished their treatment we miss seeing their happy faces regularly in the clinic 💙

Well done Billy 🙌 you are a superstar 🤩

🥰 Terrific Tommy 🥰

Recently we had a patient in the hospital who required a blood transfusion prior to their surgery.

A big shout out to Small Paws Animal Rescue for your timely response to our call out for donors and giving us the pleasure of meeting Tommy, the heroic greyhound! Tommy has such a gentle and pleasant temperament, he shared lots of cuddles with the team 🐾

Greyhounds are ideal blood donors due to their gentle nature and the fact that they have a universal blood type, making them compatible with many other breeds.

Like humans, prior to transfusion the blood group of each pet is checked to make sure the donor is an appropriate match for the recipient🩸

Luckily, the two were a match and the surgery could go ahead. As a blood donor, Tommy saved a life at the clinic, proving that every wag can make a difference 🐶

Let's give a round of applause for our furry lifesavers! 👏

🎄Merry Christmas to Our Valued Clients🎄

As we gather to celebrate this festive season, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks for your trust and support throughout the year. While Christmas brings joy and togetherness, it's also a time to be vigilant about the potential hazards that can affect our beloved pets.

🌸Lillies (Lilium species): These beautiful flowers are often used in holiday decorations, but they are extremely toxic to cats. Even small amounts can lead to serious kidney damage, so it's crucial to keep them out of reach.

🍫Chocolate: A festive favorite for humans, chocolate is toxic to pets. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, seizures.

🔋Batteries: Many holiday gadgets and decorations use batteries, which can be a choking hazard for pets. If ingested, they can cause chemical burns and gastrointestinal blockages.

🍡Kebab Skewers: These can pose a significant risk if your pet accidentally swallows them. They can puncture the digestive tract, leading to serious internal injuries.

🎄Tinsel and Baubles: While they add sparkle to our trees, tinsel can cause intestinal blockages if ingested, and baubles can shatter, posing a risk of cuts and injuries.

🍇Grapes and Raisins: These seemingly harmless snacks can cause kidney failure in dogs. It's best to keep them out of reach and opt for pet-safe treats instead.

🧅Onions and Garlic: Common ingredients in holiday meals, both onions and garlic are toxic to pets and can lead to gastrointestinal upset and more severe health issues.

🍷Alcohol: Holiday celebrations often involve alcohol, but it's essential to keep it away from pets. Even a small amount can cause significant health problems, including lethargy, vomiting, and even coma.

As you celebrate this holiday season, please keep these hazards in mind to ensure a safe and joyful Christmas for both you and your pets. Thank you for being a part of our community, and we wish you all a happy and safe holiday season!

💎 Shining Sapphire 💎

Meet Sapphire, a beautiful dog from North Hobart who came to us unable to walk. A CT scan revealed a pr*****ed disc that was compressing her spinal cord.

When a disc shifts from its normal position, it can move into the space where the spinal cord resides, putting pressure on it. This compression blocks the signals from the brain to the legs, resulting in paralysis.

Dr. Karen, our Small Animal Specialist Surgeon, performed spinal surgery to remove the disc material that was causing the compression. This procedure allowed the spinal cord to return to its proper position, initiating the recovery process.

We are thrilled to report that Sapphire has made an incredible recovery and is now walking exceptionally well—just in time for Christmas! 🎄

Do you have questions about spinal issues in dogs? Feel free to post them below! 👇

Our Story

North Hobart Veterinary Hospital was established in the 1950’s by Drs David Brown and Graham Gledhill in the building on Tasma Street. Dr Geoff Baxter joined the team in December 1969 and Dr Don Pattullo joined in 1973, which is when they built the Rosny Park practice at 58 Bligh Street. Dr Maree Richards came to the hospital in 1974.

After the Tasman Bridge collapse in 1975, the Eastern Shore Practice became markedly busier, and in 1978 they divided the practice in two, with Maree and Geoff staying in North Hobart and the others taking over the Eastern Shore practice.

During the 1970’s horses and cattle made up a large part of the practice but throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s there was a move to seeing mainly companion animals. In the late 80’s the practice commenced limited use of 273 Elizabeth Street until 1991 when a renovation combined the two buildings
