The wait is finally over! πŸŽ‰ We are thrilled to announce that our first IVF calves are starting to be born as part of our initial embryo production. The first two calves arrived early, born 10 and 9 days before their due date on December 4th, weighing 40kg and 34kg, respectively. πŸ„βœ¨

We’re also excited to share that pregnancy testing on our early spring IVF implants (approx. 750 implants) has been incredibly positive, with an impressive average success rate of 61% (fresh and frozen), ranging from 46% to 72%.

Most importantly, we’re very pleased with the consistency of these results.

Stay tuned for more updates as this journey continues!

CONSISTENT IVF RESULTS UNDERPIN THE COTTAGE CREEK HERD

There are some famous female lines represented in the paddocks at Cottage Creek, Tarcutta. NSW.
Cottage Creek invested in 2 leading daughters of Texas Undine Z183, purchased Wattletop Barunah E295 from Sprys Shorthorns & Angus and bred 2 outstanding daughters of DMM Miss Essence 61W.

From those humble beginnings, a tremendous herd is forming and it’s the use of IVF that is helping to underpin progress.
In the space of only a few years, Cottage Creek has built their investment into an active herd that includes 13 daughters and 15 granddaughters of Wattletop Barunah E295, 2 daughters and 16 granddaughters of DMM Miss Essence 61W and 2 daughters, 13 granddaughters and 4 great granddaughters of Texas Undine Z183.
Cottage Creek principal Tony Rutter says, β€œIVF just fits. It allows us to catch the lead herds in terms of quality and performance.”

And it’s not just about multiplication of animals, the Cottage Creek program is well structured, just accelerated.
β€œI won’t use a sire I haven’t seen, I’m critical on structure and temperament. We are using elite donors and we need to maintain the phenotype. But equally, we are rapidly accelerating our herds rate of genetic gain.”

Once the elite progeny hit the ground, Tony says data collection and selection pressure are the keys to building the herds footprint for clients.
β€œIVF allows us to have 5 or 6 calves on the ground from elite heifers when they have their first calf. That gives us a lot of information about her at a progeny level very early in her career. That builds consistency for our clients in the long term.”
Cottage Creek have been involved since the initial trials of IVF with Holbrook Breeders and has seen their IVF results come to fruition.

β€œWe achieved an 83% conception from the last fresh IVF program and 69% from the last 2 frozen IVF programs.”

With IVF a key pillar for building the Cottage Creek herd, these results are important in helping to underpin the herds development.

β€œHolbrook Breeders have definitely gotten their processes right now. I think a big part of the secret to IVF or MOET is the quality of the technicians and Holbrook Breeders certainly have two of the absolute best in Australia.”

Great week in the IVF Lab as the Spring breeding season ramps up.

βœ… Monday pregnancy testing on recipients (100+) for resynchronisation showed our frozen IVF embryos sitting at 67% while our frozen MOET at 72%. We expect a 2-5% loss by 50 days.

We are proud to be involved in the entire process supporting the genetic rebuild of the Norfolk Island cattle herd.

Holbrook Breeders worked with Jack Laurie from Breeder Genetics to source donors from multiple herds to produce export qualified embryos that were implanted by Dr Stuart Geard and Dr Felix Coates.

Australia is once again able to begin collection of embryos for the New Zealand market, thanks largely to the work the Ruminant Genetic Trade Advisory Group (RGTAG), who have worked diligently behind the scenes to see this market reopened.
There are increased protocols and only embryos collected under these new protocols will be eligible for export to NZ; embryos already frozen won’t qualify. This is due to testing that needs to occur on the date of collection.
The New Zealand market has been a valuable market for Australian seedstock producers, so it is fantastic to see the market opened once again.
If you would like to collect donors for New Zealand, please contact Debbie Mills at Holbrook Breeders Australia on 0260 363149 or email to [email protected].
