Equine Podiotherapy is the maintenance and rehabilitation of the equine foot by the application of physiologically
correct trimming which respect the role of orthopedics in sustaining lifelong soundness. The equine hoof has been made by nature to function in a certain way, and I trim each hoof keeping this idea always in mind. My job as a hoofcare professional is to help your horse have the best hooves possible. The hoof is a neurosensitive organ (contains feel/touch nerves). Blood flow within the foot is designed to dissipate energy via the vascular channels, including an extensive microvascular system. In short, the hoof is designed to distribute load, dissipate energy & support the horse. The key to a really good foot in brief terms:
Caudal (back) of foot has strong digital cushion and thick lateral cartilages. The toe area and breakover is short
Solar surface of the hoof is load bearing, there is no peripheral loading of the hoof wall. The hoof is compact and strong
Keep in mind that the hoof is very adaptable and will try it's best to adjust to every situation, even when it's a bad situation. A sound foot does not mean that it's necessarily "healthy".
