🌟 Caturday FAQβ“πŸˆπŸŒŸ

Why do cats have mad moments?

Cats would naturally spend a great deal of time during the day, stalking and chasing prey or avoiding danger in their adrenaline-fuelled lifestyle of hunting and exploring. A day in the life of the average house cat doesn’t really include anything very dangerous and energy may not get used up.

Suddenly, often without warning, this energy will burst out and your cat will act out a little fantasy role-playing, alternating between the hunter and the hunted, dashing around the house with a flicking tail and widely dilated pupils. This often occurs at times of the day and night when cats are naturally more active, for example at dusk, and it can be triggered by a loud noise, a visit to the litter tray or something quite inconsequential.

Your cat may stare into the top corner of the room before launching itself across the carpet but don’t worry; it’s just using up that excess energy. 😺

🌟 Ringworm 🌟

Did you know that ringworm can affect our pets too? 🐢🐱

πŸ” What is it?
Ringworm is a contagious skin infection caused by fungi. It can affect dogs, cats and other animals, as well as humans.

πŸ€” How is it transmitted?
Pets can contract ringworm through direct contact with an infected animal or by exposure to contaminated objects, such as bedding or grooming tools.

πŸ” Signs to watch for:
Keep an eye out for hair loss, red, scaly patches and itching in your pet. Ringworm lesions can vary in appearance, so be vigilant!

πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ Veterinary care:
If you suspect ringworm, consult with our vets promptly. We can perform tests to confirm the diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include antifungal medications and topical solutions.

🧼 Prevention is key:
Regular grooming, maintaining a clean living environment and avoiding contact with infected animals can help prevent ringworm. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling pets, especially if they've been in contact with strays.

Why do some cats turn their noses up to cold foodβ“πŸ˜Ί

Ever wondered why your cat ignores wet food straight from the fridge but dives in when it’s a bit warmer? Science has the answer!
A cat’s taste receptors work best at around 30Β°c, about the same temperature as their tongue. When food is served cold, their ability to taste it drops. But if their food is warmed up a little, you’re turning the flavour dial way up too!

When feeding your cat wet food, it’s best to serve it at room temperature so the food is more appealing and natural for them to eat. If the food is stored in the refrigerator to keep it fresh, take it out a little while before a mealtime to let it warm naturally or gently heat it up. When heating food, always stir and check the temperature carefully for hot spots that could burn your cat’s mouth, and allow heated food to cool back to room temperature before serving. This tip is especially helpful for fussy eaters or cats that are under the weather or unwell.

So next time your cat is giving food the cold shoulder, swap fridge-fresh for room temperature, or try a gentle warm-up, to make mealtimes more mouthwatering!
If your cat isn’t eating as they normally would or appears to have become β€˜picky’ with their food, please book a consultation with our vets. πŸ“ž

🌟 Send hugs! 🌟

Unfortunately, Dr David has had a fall resulting in a broken ankle! Never fear, he will still be at the clinic, but mostly seeing cats and smaller dogs as big dogs are a bit difficult for him to examine.

In the meantime, we also have Dr Mel, Dr Nancy and Dr Kaitlyn to look after all your pet's needs. πŸ©ΊπŸ’•

🌟 Does your dog suffer from allergies? 🌟

Allergies are a common cause of recurrent skin and ear problems seen in dogs. They can be caused by fleas, dust and pollen or food.

🐾 Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) results from an allergy to a protein in flea saliva which comes into contact with your pet when the flea bites.

🐾 Canine Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a genetically predisposed allergic skin disease. These dogs are allergic to environmental allergens such as dust mites and tree pollens.

🐾 Allergic Contact Dermatitis occurs when your pet comes directly into contact with something they are allergic to, such as certain plants and deodorisers.

🐾 Food Allergy is caused by an allergy to a component of your dog's food. The most common allergies are to beef, soy, chicken, milk, corn, wheat and eggs.

A diagnosis can be determined by a thorough allergy questionnaire, looking at the distribution of skin lesions, and/or running an elimination diet trial.
If your pet suffers from ongoing itchiness or skin problems, call our friendly nurses and book an allergy consultation today. πŸ“ž
