Exciting week concluded with the Mantrailing Global Instructors course, led by instructor Ree from the UK. Developed new engaging exercises for our teams to enhance their abilities in progression classes. Had the opportunity to observe level 1 assessments for some Brisbane teams. Stay tuned for our upcoming workshops on Introduction to Mantrailing and Puppy-only Introduction to Mantrailing.

On the weekend we ran our 1st progression class for our Intro to mantrailing participants.

All the teams did a great job, it was so good to see the dogs having such a great time 😁

Yesterday we conducted canine cognition testing on our search and rescue dogs.
This test provides us with an insight as to how each individual dog learns. It measures their natural inference vs memory abilities.

With this information I am able to tailor training sessions to each individual dog to suit their natural learning style.

The trip to the USA has began, on Tuesday I travelled from Darwin to Brisbane and today I leave for Sacramento.

The most important thing as a trainer and a detection dog handler is to never stop learning.

The month of February will see me travelling to Santa Rosa CA USA to enhance my skills and knowledge with Cameron Ford and Michael Ellis (two trainers I have followed and admired for many years).

I am super excited to see what I can bring back to my clients, AUS-1 K9 Team and of course my pack. 🐕🐾🐕‍🦺

Yesterday Zacc got to show off his detection talents for the Minister of Agribusiness and Fisherie Mark Monaghan MLA and Media from Nine News, SBS, ABC and NT News.

As always he performed great and lapped up all the extra attention 🐶

This is why agility, fitness and stamina is such an important part of our USAR K9 training.

In situations like this the dogs have to navigate unstable and dangerous environments.

USAR K9 are used to access areas deemed unsafe for rescue workers, they can do this safely due to their agility & balance.

The searching component is only one part of what makes a USAR K9.

Jaeger enjoyed an explore this morning with Ryks and a new buddy with the wonderful Mon from Monstar crew.

I use Monstar so the dogs are used to being handled by people other than myself and get to go to new exciting places while I am at work.

Tonight we finished off with a slat mill session, swimming and a scent detection training for Jaeger, Ryker, Zacc and Scout.

Happy new year from the Top End K9 crew!

2022 saw us add an additional invasive pest to the pups skill sets.
Spend a month on the road over to the east coast to train with some amazing overseas detection trainers.
Ryker excelled in his USAR training, progress through his obedience training with winning Dog of the month in level 1 & 2.
Zacc becoming a movie star by starring in Dogs to the Rescue film for the Top Dog film festival.
Scout is half way through our training for a new project and in October we welcomed a new addition to the crew with Jäger joining the crew.

I got to work with some amazing clients and I completed my Canine Fitness Trainers course.

May everyone have a safe New Year’s Eve and an enjoyable 2023.

A SAR dog’s life in some ways….

Can't take him to the beach for a walk because he bothers you and messes with the vacation... I'm not allowed to rent a house if I have a dog, and I can't take him.

However, I can take him to the rubble to find you after an earthquake, in the woods after you get lost in the mountains and you didn't have neither map nor gps; under snow because you made a detour not allowed off track; in the water despite the red flag. You have entered the sea and your life is in danger!

And finally ....
It's just a dog, but it will find you. And it will save you!!! Dedicated to all those who DO NOT like dogs!

A fun visual representation of what your dog sees (smells) every day. Look at how noisy it is and how many tracks there are intertwining. The different animals, people, and dogs movement in just one area. The snow lets us humans see the history of this area and what animals and people have passed through. A dog will smell this every day and know who and what animals have passed through. Smellavision!!!!

Dogs are incredible.

Imagine tracking and detection dogs needing to filter out all this noise and track a single scent down. Amazing!
