๐ถLoki is a beautiful 2 year old German Shepherd who recently came to us to work through some issues with reactivity and overexcitement. As you can see here, Loki was very frantic and strong on the leash (even more so under distraction) and found it difficult to walk without cutting laps of his owners and pulling very consistently on the leash.
He barked and lunged at our chickens as the temptation of a live chicken proved to be stronger than the cooked chicken in our treat pouch.
But his main issue was reactivity toward other dogs. You can see from 40m away, Loki sees the other dogs and is reacting at them, dragging us strongly toward them. He would not listen to the commands we gave him, wasn't talking treats and was focussed on the other dogs.
These short clips give us a good insight into his state of mind despite him going through positive reinforcement only training. Like so many dogs, solely telling him what we wanted him to do using treats and affection was irrelevant under real world distractions.
๐After 4 weeks of training incorporating an e-collar, he can now be off leash with so much more freedom and happily interacting with these dogs. We taught him what behaviour will be rewarded, but also showed him that unwanted behaviours will come with healthy, proportionate consequences.
A lot of dogs are only reactive on leash, but he is now able to control himself and walk nicely on leash toward the other dogs, a scenario which you saw was previously unachievable to him. He is now so much more genetically fulfilled, calmer, happier, safer to live with/take in public and enjoys more off leash freedom than ever before.
One of the main tools that we used throughout his training is an e-collar. Although it is a widely misunderstood tool, it is the most gentle and effective way to train a dog. We are happy to prove this to you in person. For years, Huon Valley K9 have had an open policy of meeting anyone who wan

Tasmanian Prong Collar Ban
Last week the Tasmanian Parliament passed an amendment to the Animal Welfare Act which bans the use of Prong Collars in Tasmania.
Despite us getting in touch with the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee and the politicians as far back as August 2021, we were cut out of the process and only given 10 minutes to present our case 2 days before the ban was passed in the Upper House and after it had already been passed in the Lower House.
The video below contains part of our 10 minute presentation as well as our thoughts on the process and how undemocratic it has been.
This law was passed based on lies, misrepresented studies and pseudo-science presented by the RSPCA - an organisation who would rather kill THOUSANDS of dogs each year due to their behaviour rather than consult with trainers like us who can fix these behaviours.
The CEO of the RSPCA Tasmania lied directly to Parliament when she stated that the RSPCA does NOT put down dogs due to their behaviour, but as you can see later in the video, the statistics released by the RSPCA themselves show that 67% of all dogs that they put down last year were killed due to behavioural reasons. This is just one of many lies that the CEO told during this process and we find it abhorrent that there are absolutely no consequences for misleading parliament and the public, and if anything, they are rewarded for it.
The RSPCA states that positive reinforcement only training is more effective, ethical and is the only training method that they approve. We have asked many different trainers and organisations to show us how they get the results we do with positive reinforcement only training. To this date, no one has shown us or been willing to engage with us. This is because it is NOT more effective, they CAN'T get these results and would rather KILL or MEDICATE dogs that they can't fix than use these tools to get happy, relaxed and safe dogs.
Regardless of your view on prong collars, the fact that our government can pass laws

One of the most rewarding things about having dogs is being able to take them to the places they love without the stress of not knowing whether they will listen to you. Drop is one of the many exercises we cover in group class and with practice and the right motivation, you can also achieve this. For more information on our group classes and whether they are right for you, please send a us a message!
