Keep Your Pets Safe in the Summer Heat! ☀️🐾

With temperatures rising, it’s important to protect our furry friends from heat-related dangers. Here are some essential tips to keep them safe and comfortable:

✅ Hydration is Key – Always provide fresh, cool water. Consider adding ice cubes for an extra chill!
✅ Limit Outdoor Time – Walk your pets early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day.
✅ Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car – Even with the windows cracked, temperatures can rise dangerously fast.
✅ Watch for Signs of Heatstroke – Heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, and vomiting are all warning signs. If you notice these, contact your vet immediately.
✅ Protect Their Paws – Hot pavement can burn sensitive paw pads. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet!
✅ Provide Shade & Cooling – If your pet is outside, make sure they have access to shade and a cooling mat or damp towel to lie on.

🌿 Warmer Weather & Allergies in Pets! 🌿

With the change in seasons, we’re seeing an increase in pets suffering from seasonal allergies. Just like us, our furry friends can react to pollen, grasses, and other environmental triggers.

Common signs of allergies include:
🐾 Excessive scratching or licking
🐾 Red, irritated skin
🐾 Ear infections or head shaking
🐾 Watery eyes or sneezing

Did you know that more pets go missing on New Year’s Eve than any other night of the year? Be prepared this year by keeping your pets secure and indoors 🏡

NYE distraction strategies include:
-Utilise enrichment - frozen treats, licki mats, toys etc.
-Provide them with a safe hiding place
-Tire them out with activity throughout the day
-Ensure they are wearing identification
-Provide background noise - Radio, television etc.

For those of you who have not been introduced, please meet Dr Lachlan Shilton our new veterinary director 🤩

Lachie joined our sister clinic North Hobart Veterinary Hospital in March 2024 and in October he became the Huonville Veterinary Director. Lachie grew up on a hobby farm in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria. He spent his younger years helping out at the family veterinary clinic. He studied Science (Geology) at Melbourne University and ventured into the gold mines of WA, but returned to uni to study Vet Science at CSU, Wagga, NSW, graduating in 2020. Dr Lachie spent 12 months working in emergency at AES Hobart!

Lachie brings experience and passion for animal welfare. He is dedicated to providing exceptional care to our community’s pets. He looks forward to getting to know our clients and their furry companions. Please join us in welcoming him to the team! 🐾
