Chocolate toxicity...

Chocolate is great for people, but it can be very dangerous for dogs.

Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine, as well as caffeine, both ingredients make chocolate highly toxic to dogs. Cats may also be affected, but they generally tend to avoid sweet foods. Dark chocolate and unsweetened bitter chocolate are the most toxic.

Clinical signs depend on the amount, type of chocolate ingested and the and the weight of your dog.

The most common signs are vomiting and diarrhea, increased thirst, panting or restlessness, excessive urination, hyperactivity and a racing heart rate.

If you believe your dog has eaten chocolate or you are concerned by any of the clinical signs above call us ASAP.

If the chocolate was consumed less than two hours ago, we may induce vomiting or give several doses of activated charcoal, which works to move the toxins out of the body without being absorbed into the bloodstream.
