The Art of Dog aims to help you understand how your dog thinks and learns, to enable better communication and help you teach life skills that make living with your dog easy. I offer private dog training lessons at my property in Chiltern or in your own home. I teach you to train your dog in simple steps that can be accomplished in short sessions and provide tailored training plans based on your re

quirements. SERVICES

- Obedience: walk on a loose leash, come when called, sit, drop, stay etc.
- Basic manners: self control, doorway manners, leave food dropped on ground, be calm inside, get off furniture, nail trimming/grooming etc.
- Puppy training: settling into a new home, housetraining, mouthing, handling, leash training, socialisation, confidence building, prevention of behaviour problems etc.
- Behaviour problems: jumping, digging, barking, aggression and reactivity, shyness, resource guarding etc. All consultations include ongoing support via phone or email. METHODS

My training methods are largely reward based, motivational methods but will depend on your dog and your end goal. It is important to me that you are comfortable with the methods used and are confident in implementing them. QUALIFICATIONS

I gained a Certificate III in Dog Training and Behaviour in 2007 and am a Victorian Government approved trainer. I am also a certified CBATI - this is a technique for reactive and aggressive dogs - see http://empoweredanimals.com/ for more information on this technique. Subsequent lessons $70 per hour. Travel is charged at the hourly rate.

If you're questioning whether to sign up for a puppy class before your pup has had all its vaccinations, read this article now!

I highly recommend commencing classes as close to 8 weeks as possible - the key socialisation period for pups is short, make the most of it!

Indoor puppy socials are a crucial component of a well thought out socialization plan, forming the cornerstone of future social interactions with other dogs.

Our next Foundation course starts Wed 8 November! I still have a few spots left.
- Suits all ages.
- Runs for 3 weeks and costs $80. Full payment required to secure your spot. No makeup classes are available - you must be able to attend all 3 weeks.
- Classes start at 6:30pm and run for 45 minutes
- Classes are held outdoors, on grass, under lights as needed
- We are located 5ks out of Chiltern.

Love this! It's super important to respect your dogs space and learn to notice the signs that they're uncomfortable, particularly if you have children in the house, to avoid any risk of a bite.

There are lots of great training methods to create safety around touch, food, toys and valued places in the house.

Did you know our agility field is available for private hire? Steer clear of public dog parks and their associated risks, and give your dog a safe place to stretch out and play.

Question.

When was the last time you saw an assistance dog at a dog park?

A police dog?

A dog trainer with their own dog?

Have you ever stopped to wonder why?

NOBODY with any proper training and behaviour credentials and experience recommends using a dog park unless it is empty.

Why?

Because we see how bad they are for dogs.

We see the stress signals.

We see your recall and engagement going out the window.

We see the damage being done to your dog when you can't.

We see inexperienced owners trying to socialise their aggressive/reactive dogs in there thinking it's a solution.

We see the high disease risk because there is nobody enforcing vaccinations.

We see the fallout that often walks through our doors after an attack.

Dog parks are great in theory but practically you won't find anyone with any credibility recommending them as a great outlet for your dog.

Before you go to the dog park to exercise your dog, or have a playdate, please just let this post wander into your head. You may get lucky and get away with it for years, or you may not.

If you are going to use them despite this advice, please try to use it when it's empty

Weather is not being kind this week, very wet underfoot so the 10am class tomorrow is cancelled. We'll try again in a fortnight - Wed 19.

Wednesday 'Beyond Basics' classes will now start 21 June. At this stage I do not have numbers to run either of these so get in touch if you're interested! I need a minimum of 4 bookings to run.

If not enough interest by next week, I will convert the Wed PM class to a Basic Obedience course and advertise again.

The benefit of teaching puppies object exchanges! Zeke loves socks. Rather than running away and chewing on them when he finds them though, he knows if he brings them to me, I will praise him, not punish. While I try to keep my socks out of his reach (management is the easiest training solution), sometimes he sneaks a pair out 😂
