No means NO!
How to control nipping in puppies is a controversial subject with as many opinions and methods to try as there are people to suggest them. It is also one of the most common complaints/questions/problems that puppy owners have.
Whether it's politically correct, whether it's the done thing, whether it's what the doggy psychologists suggest, I don't know. What I do know, is that a No means NO! policy works effectively with a wide variety of methods to enforce it.
They might be cute and look like teddy bears, but they really are fuzzy little terrorists who were born to work livestock and bred to withstand a kick from a cow, or an angry sheep trampling over the top of them, only to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and bounce back into the fray. So it is unsurprising that some individuals seem to be persistently nippy.
Redirection, giving them a toy instead of chewing on you, ignoring them, faint hearted no's and the occasional loud whisper is not enough to deter most puppies.
A high pitched yelp will make some soft hearted pups spit you out quickly as they didn't intend on hurting you but won't deter others. A scruff of their collar like mumma dog would do when she's had enough might be enough to stop some of the others. However some will still persist. Let me reiterate - turning your back, ignoring the puppy chewing on you, giving them a toy (rewarding them for biting you in the first place) will probably NOT work. For these ones you really need to adopt a No means NO! attitude. Consistently and firmly.
In my opinion, after 10 weeks no puppy should be chewing on you. It is not essential that they do so. It is not important for their development that you allow it. They should have plenty of other things to work their teeth on, and your body and clothes should not be an option. Failure to restrain this impulse creates a dog that is unpleasant to be around, and in some cases unsafe, especially around children. It is not the fault of the dog, but lack of boundaries. Please raise your puppies to be good citizens.
Remember - No means NO! If you say it, enforce it.
