Equine Dentals out in the field 🐴🐎🦷
Farewell Liv 👋
We would like to thank Dr Olivia Williams for spending the last 3 weeks locuming for us. We loved having her & are grateful to our wonderful clients for welcoming her to Gowrie Vet too. With such a shortage of Vets in the industry it is difficult to get locums & having Olivia has allowed each of our hard working Vets to have some much needed time off.

Bonus points if you can circle it on the X-ray posted in the comments 👇
These two sweet little girls are still available for homes 🐱
Entropion
This dog had a bilateral entropion, where one or both of the eyelids are rolled in toward the eye.
This causes extreme irritation to the surface of the eyeball and causes eye ulcerations which is very painful.
Nothing a little plastic surgery can’t fix.
Photos of Dr Sarah’s plastic surgery skills are posted in comments.

Did you know mould ingestion can be dangerous for our pets??
Mould ingestion can cause toxicity, signs to be aware of include
👉 reduced appetite
👉 vomiting and diarrhoea
👉 muscle and head tremors
👉 coughing, wheezing or sneezing
👉 lethargy
👉 bleeding from the nose and/or mouth
👉 seizures (in severe cases)
This little dog stole some mouldy bread, who would have thought the reaction could be so dramatic!!
Thankfully, our little patient made a complete recovery after 4 days in intensive care and an induced coma
Spring is here, the sun is shining & slithery venomous snakes are on the move!
We have already diagnosed two snakebite victims this month.
The symptoms of snake bite may vary but please be aware of the following :
🐍vomiting
🐍ataxia(wobbly hind legs)
🐍salivating
🐍dilated pupils
🐍foaming from the mouth.
Snake bites can present in many forms. If your pet is behaving out of character, early diagnosis and treatment can make a vital difference.
The video below is a sample of blood taken from a dog who was bitten by a snake. As you can see, the blood doesn’t clot. A clotting test is a vital tool in snake bite diagnosis, along with other blood tests we are able to run quickly inhouse.
Wow what a day!
Two snake bites within 20 minutes of each other...snakes are obviously still out. 🪱🐍
We also performed dental treatment on a 4 year old cat with a severe tooth ache. Have a look at the video of Gundi talking about neck lesions below.
If you’ve got a cat, please check its teeth.
🐱 It’s baby season 🐶
With Spring upon us we are seeing all the little puppies & kittens you could dream of. And with that a few cases of Milk Fever (hypocalcaemia). Milk fever is commonly seen in small/toy breed dogs feeding medium-large litters of puppies of about 3-4 weeks of age. But it can present in any bitch or queen that is actively lactating at any time.
Signs of Milk Fever can start subtly with panting, shivering, twitching & progress rapidly to seizures & death if left untreated.
Thankfully, Milk Fever is easily prevented with calcium syrup added to food daily from the time the babies are born until the mum has fully weaned them. We also recommend switching the mothers food to a breed appropriate puppy diet which provides higher levels of calcium as well.
If you have a beautiful mumma at home getting ready to have babies or already feeding please drop in & pick up some calcium syrup today 😊
And remember we are always available for emergency treatment if you feel Milk Fever may be affecting your pet!
