HENDRA ALERT!
A positive Hendra case has been confirmed in an unvaccinated horse in Cardiff (Newcastle Suburbs). The horse presented with mild symptoms of depression and not eating which progressed to collapse and death within 24 hours after vet attendance.

This is the second positive Hendra case reported in the Newcastle region. The first was in Wallsend in 2021.

Vaccination continues to be the best way to protect your horse and family from Hendra virus. Please ring the clinic if you have questions regarding Hendra vaccination or check out the NSW DPI website for information regarding Hendra virus.

Protect your horse. Protect your family. Protect your vet. Vaccinate.

Well this is where it all started. Gatton College graduation 1961, then Veterinary Science graduation 1968. The time has come for me to cease travelling for Equine Dental work. One more trip to Hervey Bay and surrounds late February to complete current bookings. After that will be available locally at Inverlaw. Very grateful for the wonderful support for the past 20 years from my clients. Have thoroughly enjoyed working as an equine dentist and helping many horses in that time. This has been a very satisfying chapter in a long career in Veterinary Medicine. Have not lost the horse bug. Just want more time with my own horses.

A young Peter, back in the day before he graduated as a vet.

Diploma day where he gained his Diploma of Animal Husbandry, as well as just a couple of awards. 😂

To all our EVDS clients, followers and supporters...
Lara here, the EVDS Practice Manager. Over the coming days and weeks, you'll get to know various members of our team as we initiate our flood response in an effort to help out our vet colleagues, who are working their backsides off trying to treat the huge amount of flood affected animals in our region and further north.
While our amazing leader, Dr Oliver Liyou, does what he does best, networking and offering professional support, our team will be stepping up to keep our social media page up-to-date with what we are doing in response to the current situation, as well as share resources and links that we think may be of assistance to our fellow veterinary professionals, as well as our horse owner clients.
Below is our initial flood response road map. We are currently in stage 1 and will keep you updated with all the initiatives and progress we have made while we try to positively impact this terrible situation.
We are very aware how lucky we are to be safe and dry in South Grafton, and know that this small amount of effort is nothing in comparison to what the Northern Rivers and Far North Coast vets and clinics are doing out in the field.
Stay safe.
- Lara

Some days just start well.
Was on my way to vaccinate the worst needle shy horse ever and expecting drama.
My client met me at the gate and said just walk down to the yard as we have built a crush especially for you to needle Gunner.
Had a stool placed for me to stand on, mane plaited clear of injection site, horse sedated with oral ACP.
Needled with no drama.
Such consideration for welfare of vet and horse has blown me away.

Here is a very good reason for examining two year olds when first being bitted up.
Note the point on the first premolar and the crescent shaped ulcer inside the cheek.
This was present both sides and caused by bit pressure .
Second view shows mouth after treatment, much more comfortable.

Another interesting days dentistry.
Warmblood mare age 21. Losing weight, difficulty chewing.
Severe overgrowth of molar 311, impacting tooth above and blocking any normal chewing. Then a deep cheek ulcer and a loose lower molar on opposite side.
Nice feeling to relieve all this pain in about one hour.
Not a job for the no gag, no sedation experts.

Foal Immunoglobulin G (IgG) Testing:

It’s always a very exciting moment when your foal finally first shows their face in the world. A foal is born with a functional immune system (if all is normal), but has a general absence of immunoglobulins to aid in the defense against infection. The foal acquires their initial immunoglobulin protection from the mare’s first milk and without receiving adequate levels this can lead to serious health problems for the foal.

Foal Immunoglobulin G (IgG) tests assess the adequacy of colostrum intake and antibody absorption. Foals should ideally be tested at 12-24 hours of age.
IgG test categories:
> 8g/L adequate passive transfer of immunity
4-8g/L Partial failure of passive transfer of immunity
0-4g/L Failure of passive transfer of immunity
Failure or partial failure of immunity is a recognized risk factor for the development of septicaemia or joint infections. Knowing a foal’s IgG levels helps your vet decide whether further colostrum or a plasma transfusion is indicated.
