The Birman is believed to have originated in Burma, where they were considered sacred, and the companion cats of the Kittah priests. The Birman was recognised as a separate breed in France in 1925. However by the end of World War 11, only two Birmans were left alive in Europe and a program of outcrossing was necessary to re-establish the breed.
The Birman is a semi longhaired cat with a strong b***d body, broad head and medium sized ears and a roman nose in profile. They are available in a variety of point colours being seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red and cream, and all combinations of tortie and tabby points. They have very distinctive white feet. The front markings are called gloves and the back markings are called gauntlets. In the lighter point colours, it may take up to 12 months for the white feet to be seen. All Birmans have blue eyes.
They have a very easy to manage silky coat so are quite low maintenance. Birmans are people orientated and become very attached to their family and love being involved in the happenings of the household.
IN 1989 I COMMENCED BREEDING BIRMANS AND MY FIRST CAT WAS A BLUE POINT FEMALE NAMED SASKIA. I ADDED SEAL AND CHOCOLATE POINTS TO MY BREEDING STOCK BUT I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED RED CATS. SO I NOW SPECIALISE IN BREEDING RED, CREAM AND TORTIE POINTS ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES OTHER POINT COLOURS ARE AVAILABLE. I PUT GREAT EMPHASIS ON TEMPERAMENT IN MY KITTENS AS IT IS POINTLESS OWNING A GLAMOROUS LOOKING CAT, IF THEY DON’T HAVE A NATURE TO MATCH.
