We relocated this adorable little Keelback (Tropidonophis Mairii) from Churchill.

Here are some fascinating facts about Keelbacks:

•Keelbacks are the only non-venomous, semi-aquatic snakes in Australia. They are often mistaken for the highly venomous Rough-Scaled Snake.

•Depending on the temperature, Keelbacks can be active during the day (diurnal) or night (nocturnal).

•When threatened, they release a foul-smelling musk to deter predators.

•Their diet consists exclusively of vertebrates, including frogs, tadpoles, and lizards. They use their sharp, backward-curved teeth to grip prey and, unlike most snakes, consume their meals tail-first.

•Keelbacks have limited resistance to toad toxins, allowing them to successfully prey on small to medium-sized cane toads.

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

DAY 12

THE COMMON DEATH ADDER SNAKE
(ACANTHOPHIS ANTARCTICUS)
HIGHLY-VENOMOUS

● VENOM
The Common Death Adder is Highly Venomous and is among the most venomous snakes in the world. It has neurotoxic venom that can cause paralysis and, if untreated, respiratory failure. Before antivenom, bites had a fatality rate of about 50%. But with prompt medical attention, fatalities are now rare.

● PREFERRED FOOD SOURCE
Common Death Adders feed on small mammals, birds, frogs, and reptiles. Their prey is ambushed and immobilized quickly with a rapid strike and potent venom. Common Death adders are sit-and-wait hunters, remaining motionless for long periods to ambush prey, using its tail as a lure, twitching it to mimic a worm or insect and attract prey.

● PREFERRED HABITAT
The Common Death Adder is found in diverse environments, including forests, woodlands, grasslands, and coastal sand dunes. It often hides under leaf litter, logs, or rocks, making it well-camouflaged.

● REPRODUCTION
Common Death adders are ovoviviparous, which means they gives birth to live young. The females produce around 10–30 offspring per litter, usually in late summer or early autumn.

●DIURNAL/NOCTURNAL
The Common Death Adder is nocturnal meaning it is active primarily at night but may also hunt during the day.

• If you see a Common Death Adder Snake, do not approach it, try to touch it, or attempt to catch it. If it is outdoors and it's not bothering you give it some time to move along and if it doesn't move on and you want it relocated call a professional.

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

DAY 11

THE BANDY BANDY SNAKE
(VERMICELLA ANNULATA)
MILDLY-VENOMOUS

● VENOM
The Bandy Bandy is mildly venomous but not considered dangerous to humans. Its venom is used primarily for subduing its prey, and bites to humans are extremely rare.

It is known for its unique defensive behaviour, where it lifts loops of its body into the air, creating a striking display to startle predators.

● PREFERRED FOOD SOURCE
Bandy Bandys feed almost exclusively on blind snakes (Typhlopidae), a unique dietary specialization. They locate prey underground using their keen sense of smell.

● PREFERRED HABITAT
The Bandy Bandy Snake is found across a range of habitats, including forests, grasslands, and arid regions. It is typically burrow-dwelling, often hiding under rocks, logs, or within loose soil.

● REPRODUCTION
Bandy Bandy's are Oviparous (egg-laying).
Females lay small clutches of 2–15 eggs in summer, often in secluded, warm areas. The hatchlings emerge fully independent and are patterned like adults.

●DIURNAL/NOCTURNAL
The Bandy Bandy is most active at night, often seen crossing roads after dark. They are typically shy and non-aggressive. Its defence display is purely a bluff to deter predators.

• If you see a Bandy Bandy Snake, do not approach it, try to touch it, or attempt to catch it. If it is outdoors and it's not bothering you give it some time to move along and if it doesn't move on and you want it relocated call a professional.

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

DAY 10

THE YELLOW-FACED WHIP SNAKE
(Demansia psammophis)
MILDLY-VENOMOUS

● VENOM
The Yellow-faced Whip Snake is venomous but not considered dangerous to humans.
Its venom is primarily designed for subduing prey and is unlikely to cause significant harm beyond localized pain and swelling if bitten. Prompt medical attention is recommended for any snake bite and to manage symptoms and monitor for complications.

● PREFERRED FOOD SOURCE
Yellow-faced Whip snakes feed on lizards, especially skinks, which are abundant in their habitat and occasionally other small reptiles or reptile eggs.
Active and fast-moving, this snake relies on its speed and agility to chase down prey. Its excellent vision allows it to detect movement and quickly react to fleeing lizards

● PREFERRED HABITAT
The Yellow-faced Whip Snake can be found in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, woodlands, and scrublands. They prefer dry regions and are often spotted under rocks, logs, or in leaf litter. They can also be found in and around homes.

● REPRODUCTION
Yellow-faced Whip Snakes lay between 5 to 20 eggs in a single clutch, depending on their size and age. They usually deposit their eggs hidden in, warm, and humid locations, such as under rocks, logs, or within leaf litter. The eggs take around 6–10 weeks to hatch, depending on environmental conditions like temperature and humidity. The Hatchlings are independent from birth and measure about 15–20 cm in length.

●DIURNAL/NOCTURNAL
Yellow Faced Whip snakes are active during the day (Diurnal), particularly in warm weather. They are fast and alert, making it challenging to approach.

• If you see a Yellow-faced Whip Snake, do not approach it, try to touch it, or attempt to catch it. If it is outdoors and it's not bothering you give it some time to move along and if it doesn't move on and you want it relocated call a professional.
