Star the 19 week old Standard Poodle puppy, is here is with me for a 4 week board and train while her dad is visiting family in Singapore. Shes going through a bit of a fear period at the moment, so the only thing I’m looking for here, is that shes not too stressed out. I’m also encouraging her interacting with the environment and looking at everything because how else will she learn to process the world? She’s still giving me some beautiful engagement, but I also want her confident in herself, not just confident that she’s only safe because I’m right there.

* I use a harness and flexi set up for this sort of training because there is no pressure then placed on the dog and if they do have a big scare and kick into flight, they don’t feel as trapped. This is not the set up I recommend if you need control in an environment. I had a slip lead ready to go in my pocket incase I needed it, and had plenty of tasty food in my treat pouch to get her attention if needed. *

With puppies, it’s all about how rewarding and fun you are. If you work hard to be the most interesting thing around the dog, then suddenly you are who the dog is interested in.

Here’s 5 month old Odin the Standard poodle puppy, showing off his newly formed loose lead skills and his engagement with his owner. And his owner showing off how willing he is to pay for that engagement!

If you are after some good quality exercise or some confidence building, I highly recommend the Woofer Wagon!

It’s always important to makes sure you pets are tick protected, but also that you get into the habit of checking your dog for ticks every day, especially if you have gone for a walk in the bush or live in a wooded area. Tick products on the market currently will not prevent ticks from landing and attaching to your dog, they will just kill the tick once they have bitten. So be mindful of this when out and about in tick prone areas.

⚠ SERIOUS NEW DOG DISEASE IN QUEENSLAND ⚠

The tick-borne dog disease ehrlichiosis (err-lick-ee-o-sis) has been recently confirmed in a Queensland dog. It is reported that this dog had not travelled outside of Queensland, meaning the disease has likely found its way into our local tick population.

Erlichiosis can make dogs very sick – and without treatment can kill them.

Dogs that are sick with this disease get a fever, look very tired, do not want to eat and lose weight. Their eyes can also go blue and mucky, and they can get nose bleeds. It is important you use anti tick products on your dogs to stop the ticks from biting them and spreading the disease.

If your dog is sick, make sure you take it to a vet.

Dog owners should have their dogs on regular tick products, always check their dogs for ticks, and look for signs of the disease. Talk to your vet about the best tick products to use.

If you think your dog has ehrlichiosis – speak to your vet, community Animal Management or Environmental Health Worker straight away.

Working on boundary training and not running out the open front door with Shadow and Coco.

So many people over look just how smart and quick to learn little dogs are, but they are just as capable as a big dog if you put in the time and work.

Frankie the French Bull dog had her first train ride this morning and did so well! We have been going to the train station for a few weeks now, exposing her to the train platform and the train coming in and out of the station. She has not been phased by any of this, so today we took the leap and got on, going one station. Training there, then catching the train the one stop back again.

This little pocket rocket has come along so far in her training, both public access and her task training at home!
