Making decisions about rugging is much easier when you realise just how different horses are from humans. The temperature range where we feel comfortable (our thermoneutral zone, or TNZ) is much higher and narrower than horses.

In general, horses are comfortable between 5-25ā„ƒ, whilst humans are comfortable between 25-30ā„ƒ. That means that we feel cold before horses do, but horses feel hot before we do.

Horses would feel the cold more if they are old, ill, injured and cannot move, or clipped.

The PCA Horse Welfare Policy advises owners to be aware of the horseā€™s ThermoNeutral Zone (5C ā€“ 25C) and use rugs appropriately to protect against cold but prevent overheating. Check rugs daily and horses weekly for signs of abrasions and rubbing.

If it is 3C when you leave home for school or work, but it will reach 20C, get the rugs off before you go.

Hereā€™s a test for you:
If rugged, would the horseā€™s coat be dry (no sweat) underneath the rugs, if you checked under them during the warmest part of the day?

Working with Dan the man. The new project ottb.
Using our recycled material round yard.

With Equitation Science we have a new way in asking questions.

We had our first ride and it wasnā€™t the best no one got hurt but we found that there are several issues including some not so clear signals meaning we were lacking In ground communication. Once we fix this we should be able to try again and have more confidence to go forward.

I donā€™t believe itā€™s natural to have horses backing and backing to a point there is no stop to the point they sit on their behind or fall over themselves causing injury. We didnā€™t get to that point and as I noticed escalation we stopped when we got forward and I hoped off. My wonderful partner filmed it so the footage isnā€™t shown as the quality is poor.

With Equitation Science we strive to communicate with little arousal and flight as possible. Even I have had to learn to be more quiet in my handling and not aggressive in correction but only reward the slightest try.

He can pick up his leads correctly in his canter work and he looks amazing when he canters head down stretching his topline.

Let the journey begin.

Here is a link to our grounds to raise some much needed funds after a devastating flood that has resulted in water having no where to go. With yards, arenas, club room and amenities all effected any donations would help to recover what was lost to bring this much needed Equestrian centre back to life for the Sunraysia district.

Thank you DR.Zoe manning at Murry valley Equine Dental Vet.
I have been a customer for over 3 years now.

Dans got a waved mouth and requires a re-visit in 6 months to help level his teeth. Wolf teeth removed so he wonā€™t get banging from the bit.
In 3 days the real work begins.

Iā€™m so excited to see where this strong muscled boy takes me :)

Good day everyone,

Those of us at Hay Plus Farms would like to share our concern about a trend we have seen emerge at the beginning of this year's hay season. I have noticed many people promoting first and second-cutting alfalfa as safe for your horses. This has traditionally been taboo as the protein and relative feed value are so high that kidney problems and laminitis (founder) are at much higher risk. Historically, the first 3 cuttings between late January to early May is whatā€™s called ā€œtest hayā€ meaning it tests high enough to promote high milk production in dairy milk cows (wet cows). In late May, as it starts to warm up, you will notice more bloom (purple flowers) on alfalfa fields. The plant has now put its energy into the flower. When this happens we grow dry cow hay for the non-milking heifers at a dairy also known as dry cows. The fiber levels go up and protein levels go down. This is much safer for your horses. For some background, this year the export market has slowed way down, milk prices are down, and currently there is a $60-$90 per ton gap between what a dairy is willing to pay versus what the retail consumer is willing to pay. Therefore, many people are selling 3-string alfalfa to the general public because higher profits can be made.
We don't intend to tell you what to do, but we want to help you make an educated decision.
Here are some things you may look for to identify test hay.
1) Is the hay super soft, meaning when you pull on the bale strings does the bale fold over.
2) No purple flower.
3) large stemmed but super soft hay. What we call ropy.
4) extremely green.
5) Or most importantly ask your supplier what cutting they are bringing you.

In conclusion, it doesnā€™t take long for a vet bill to significantly outpace the dollar or two you save on a bale of hay. We realize each person has different approaches and opinions; our recommendation is, unless you have milk cows, do not buy the first three cuttings of the year. Hay Plus Farms will not even carry it at our yard because of the liability. The hay pictured below is first cutting alfalfa, and may help you know what to look for.
Thank you for your time and make it a great day.

Saddle fit went extremely well. My thoughts confirmed ā€¦ black gullets gone and a red one is put in!!! I now have a saddle to fit both crim and Dan that will NOT be pinching the withers!! Which will no longer cause pain in forward moving.
:D
Almost ready to get back into the saddle.
Go slow! Go right then add the speed. Technique will always prevail over speed any day!!

What are the implications of mismatched front feet?

Many horses have high/low front feet, where one foot has a steeper angle then itā€™s opposite.
But do we realise how much effect this can have on the entire musculoskeletal system!?

We can have different types of high/low.
A boxy foot and an ideal foot.
An ideal foot and a flat foot.
A flat foot and a boxy foot.
Studies have shown that that amount of difference in angle between the two is proportional to the effects on the horses biomechanics.

These horses may require much more regular physiotherapy or chiropractic due to the profound compensations which are akin to sub clinical unilateral lameness. Especially in the back as Gomez Alvarez et al. (2007) measured the majority of compensations for lameness are seen in the spine.

This is a great example of how the hoof and the horse are inextricably linked as the hoof conformation is created by physiological influences. Below is a comprehensive graphic of the effects of high/low.

So around 2 years later and knowing this might be the last time Iā€™m here with these amazing rsi people were moving up into the new Dressage Institute with Alicia Dickinson. With a change in focus new knowledge and a ton of new tools! I canā€™t wait to see what this year will bring. I have already booked into 3 lessons for a full holiday for next year! Planing on taking either my mare or Dan the man.
Let the fun begin!
You think tashā€™s YRS was amazing wait until you get to learn from Alicia herself!
Unfortunately my horse I was borrowing wasnā€™t well so I didnā€™t get to ride but being an auditor and being able to speak to Alicia and ask a few questions but confirm a crap tone of knowledge I already knew was phenomenal!
Itā€™s worth every single penny!!! You donā€™t want to miss out message Your Riding Success and get onto this amazing journey Alicia knows her stuff and is actually training Tash herself! And get this itā€™s recorded! Online and easy to understandā€¦
So what are you waiting for click their page today and check out what they can offer you!!

After all this time there is still light at the end of this tunnel. I never in my mind think I would ever be able to come back here. Itā€™s an absolute privilege to still follow and be on this path the best I possibly can. With being a rider for Saturday that was unfortunately cancelled I have learned so much over the past 2 days.
Alicia Dickinson is absolutely amazing and turning DMA into DI is going to be incredible. Having the privilege of a DMA rider to see behind the scenes. If you thought tash and her riding was good come join us and see how supa amazing Alicia is turning it into! Itā€™s going to absolutely blow your mind!

Iā€™m just glad I did listen and my riding is on the right path.
Sticking with this one group of coachs from DMA turning into DI and I get 9 sessions each week that I can pick a trainers brain every month for the next 12 months. That is roughly 0.40 per sessionā€¦ I would be crazy not to take advantage.
With doing a diploma in equitation science and learning from these coaches I understand today that I have been on the right path and I need to stop second guessing myself and asking other peopleā€™s opinions because itā€™s non of their businessā€¦. šŸ¤Æ! Amazing right.
So prepare for some entertainment:)

Love yas!

Why is it imperative that you flush your horses every month with spylium husk..
because you get so much sand in their guts that they colic if you donā€™t!
Check out these images of dans excrement! No doubt in my mind even after aprox 5 cups over 5 days worth of sand that there would not be a repeat if I didnā€™t do more then 5 days šŸ™„.
In another week I will give him another 3 days done just to help expel more.

Itā€™s shocking but a very good warning and wake up call!!

Sand colic is one of the hardest colics I have delt with thus far but very happy to announce we as a team have made it through this horrid ordeal! I have shared some photos of the sand in his p**p the sand test I did measure of 1/3 sand in his p**p.

So back story I put the two new horses in the stable to do my weekly weeding and they were on day 3 of equitec*coolstance* sand flush as I do at the start of each month. Dan looked like he was just being lazy and was having a cute moment how ever that evening he was down again. I knew something was up.
Straight into colic recovery protocols. Into the front paddock walking and 2 very late nights we went from no s**t to seven to s**ts and the ugly presence of sand reared itā€™s ugly head.
With out the help of some highly regarded friends we may not had made it. Thinking we were going to have a funeral for a possible twisted gut we prepared for the worstā€¦ I havnt had a horse die in my watch yet! And I donā€™t plan on it anytime soon.
This is why you sand flush!! Even though he was fed in one of those blue orange picking plastic bins he obviously has had the sand accumulation well over the small amount of weeks we have had him!

Itā€™s not something to ignore if your horse lays down twice for no visible reasons itā€™s a crook gut and should never be ignored. Goal for riding after our trip to the DMA clinic in Melbourne.

And so it begins.. mares first time on the lunge.
