With the Australian summer in full swing, the rising temperatures and humidity can be tough on our pets. Stay mindful of your dog's comfort and safety with these essential tips to help keep them cool and healthy during the heat.

- Fresh Water: Always provide fresh, cool water for hydration.
- Limit Exercise: Walk your dog early morning or evening, not during peak heat (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
- Shade & Ventilation: Ensure your dog has shaded spots and good airflow indoors.
- Cooling Products: Use cooling mats, vests, or bandanas to help cool them down.
- Groom Regularly: Brush your dog to remove excess fur; trim thick coats but avoid shaving completely.
- Paw Protection: Avoid hot pavement. Walk on grass or dirt instead.
- Indoor Cooling: Use fans or AC and place damp towels on your dog.
- Frozen Treats: Give ice cubes, frozen dog treats, or frozen fruit for a refreshing snack.
- Cool Pool: Let your dog splash in a shallow kiddie pool to cool off.
- Signs of Overheating: Watch for panting, drooling, or lethargy. If in doubt, contact a vet.

Summer horse care tips to ensure your horse stays healthy and comfortable during the warmer months.
💧Hydration - Ensure your horse has constant access to clean, fresh, cool water, and consider adding electrolytes to encourage drinking if needed.
☀️ Shade and Shelter - Provide shade or a cool, well-ventilated shelter and avoid long periods of direct sunlight to prevent overheating.
😰 Exercise - Exercise your horse early in the morning or late in the evening when it's cooler, and reduce the intensity during the hottest part of the day.
🐴 Grooming - Brush your horse regularly to remove sweat and dirt and clip their coat if needed to help them stay cool.
🥕 Nutrition - Offer quality hay, adjust their feed based on activity levels, and add electrolytes to their water or feed if they’re exercising or sweating excessively.
🪰 Fly Control - Use fly and insect repellents, flyveils and rugs to protect your horse from insects.
😎 Sun Protection - Apply sunscreen to sensitive areas like the nose and ears, and provide extra shade for horses prone to sunburn.
🥵 Heat Stress Monitoring - Watch for signs of overheating like excessive sweating or rapid breathing, and cool them down with shade and cool water if needed.

Help keep your pets cool this Summer with the Scream Cool Pad! It assists in keeping your pet cool by absorbing body heat & dissipating this back into the air through evaporation via the areas of the cool pad not in use. Using the Cool Pad is better for your pets than laying on an already cold surface. Scream Cool Pads are suitable for dogs, cats and small animals.

It is important to remember that not all dogs instinctively know how to swim and some are actually scared of or don’t like the water. We have put together a few tips to help teach your dog how to swim, enjoy the water and most importantly to stay safe.

- Introduce your dog to water when they are young. The earlier you get them comfortable with the water the better.

- Never force or pull your dog into the water, this is likely to scare them more. You can coax them by using their favourite toy or calling them in.

- Start with a small amount of shallow water. A wading pool or clam shell is a good starting point. Then you can gradually increase the water depth as the dog becomes more confident.

- Starting in a creek, dam, calm water beach or somewhere they are able to walk into the water can be less daunting than a swimming pool as they know they can touch the bottom.

- If swimming in a pool, ensure that your dog can safely get out. Sometimes a ramp can be helpful and easier to use than stairs.

- Take your time teaching them to swim, doing it over several days if they are hesitant.

- The swimming action of paddling the feet generally comes naturally when a dog is in the water and can’t touch the bottom. Many dogs just need practice to perfect the motion. If they need help learning this you can hold the dog around their middle and balance on them against your body while gently moving their legs in a paddling movement.

Remember, safety first when it comes to letting your dog swim. Always supervise them, never let them swim alone. Ensure that they are close enough to hear you and that you can reach them if needed. Make sure the water is safe, clean, free of debris and not in an area with a strong current. The vet-n-pet DIRECT Help Centre has a great article on Water Safety Tips For Dogs to remind everyone how to keep your dog safe around water, read here >> https://help.vetnpetdirect.com.au/kb/water-safety-tips-for-your-dog/
