Safe Driving with Pets - Tips
🚗🐾 January 2nd is National Pet Travel Safety Day 🐾🚗
Traveling with pets is common in Australia, especially at this time of year.
Whether you're road tripping across town or setting off across country to explore, travelling with pets can be a fun and exciting, but do you know the risks and tips to keep them safe while driving?
🐾 Always keep them secure in a harness and safety lead attached to the car seat belt or in a carrier/crate. It is indeed illegal for a pet to sit on the driver’s lap.
🐾 In all state across Australia it is an offence to drive with your pet on your lap, fines can exceed $400.00 with other penalties also associated.
🐾 Never leave your pet unattended in the car. Pets die in locked cars every year.
🐾 Get everything prepared before leaving, are they safe to travel? A vet visit may be needed to check or provide calming medications. Have their favourite toys, treats available. Poo bags and correctly fitting collar, harness and leads. Are they up to date with their vaccinations and prevention?
🐾 Despite the seeming biological imperative of pets wanting to stick their head outside the window, it's actually a harmful and risky habit. Their eyes are exposed to dust, dirt and rocks from the road. Your pet can also be at risk of falling out the window, the window should NEVER be down enough for their whole head to be out, allowing fresh air in but their head and body remains inside.
