Happy New Year and Happy Birthday to Dr Scott 🥳 Dr Scott's Birthday landed in the holiday period, so we celebrated with him once we returned to work. Nurse Amylee made Scott a cake entirely out of protein, which is what you see him holding here.

What is Dr Scott doing with that egg yolk?

Well, he certainly isn't making egg nogg (although I'm sure the staff would appreciate some)! Fun fact - Egg yolk is used as a part of a mixture of ingredients in what we call a 'semen extender'. This is used to create an environment outside of the reproductive tract that will preserve the quality and function of the s***m. The proteins and cholesterol contained in the egg yolk protect the semen from temperature shock, whereas other substrates such as glucose and buffers provide an energy source and acidity protection respectively. These extenders need to be kept in an ideal environment free from heat and moisture to reduce the risk of bacterial growth.

So, next time you crack an egg, think about all the wonderful uses this fantastic product has, or you could make us some egg nogg, the choice is yours!
