It wasn’t Orange Ears day at Sandown on Wednesday. She will come home for a spell now. OE looked fabulous and was jumping out of her skin, such a credit to Tal Nolen and his team.

It's wonderful country trainers like our friend Gerald Egan who keep this industry alive, through hard work, a love of the animals they work with, dedication and honesty. Congratulations Gerald! Well done on the well deserved recognition.

What a beautiful day. Watching the Inglis sales via the live feed and moving cattle. Somewhere in this paddock there is cattle, but the feed is over my head, so I can't see them 😂.

Finding the line in perfect timing. Well done to Costamony, Tal and Shaun Nolan. She was nearly retired this season to go to stud, but has earned two wins this preparation. Beating course record holder yesterday on a slow 6, running 1000m in 57secs.

Straight out of the paddock (with rugs of course) this superb filly has certainly been enjoying her spring break.

We've had quite a lot of rain over the past few weeks, but when the sun comes out everything looks better. Even the winter woollies!

Our thoughts are with the Tony Noonan Racing team, Alistair and connections of this beautiful mare. We were lucky enough to spell Tori when she resided in Victoria.

Deeply saddened by the loss of our great mare Ortensia, pictured here with Jake at Sha Tin in 2010.

We'll miss you girl.

Our condolences to the Inglis extended family. Our thoughts are with Arthur and Charlotte at this time.

There has already been an overwhelming response from the equestrian and thoroughbred communities for the mosaic print which is being put together for the Inglis family. Please post your favourite photo of you and your beloved horse and add , and it will then be incorporated into the mosaic which will make up the one overall photo of Olivia riding. All are welcome to share this post to show their support.

Moving the cattle tonight. We now keep a modest herd of cattle. They are great foragers and eat down the grasses further and more thoroughly than horses. Cattle are great to rotate onto horse pastures, not only is it good for the pasture... they taste good too!

Our fences feature top and bottom Electrobraid and Borderline PVC inbetween. The electric top and bottom discourages the horses from rubbing or laying on fences and also stops them trying to 'talk' to horses across the laneways from them. Unlike wire the electric rope will snap if a horse hits it at speed, minimising injury.

As most people will know, we concentrate primarily on spelling and convalescing race horses. We also take pride in growing out young young horses and preparing yearlings (and older horses) for sale. We are excited to be kicking back into yearling preparation with a draft to prepare for the Magic Millions Adelaide sales. Paddy does a super job, and is occasionally able to accept horses to prepare.

Looking back through the photo files and found this one from the early days (circa 2006)! Plenty of feed, that's for sure. The main difference is now the shade and trees that we have on the farm.

You won't find a magazine worthy entrance or stable block at Springbank, but what you will find are functional and well thought out paddocks and stables. You will find irrigated pastures that are sewn, fertilised, rested and maintained. You will find horses naturally do better here, with green grass beneath their hooves, room to move and a restful environment (and we weigh them on our purpose built in ground scales so that you know exactly how well they are doing). You won't find paddocks bare of feed or over run with cape w**d nor marshmallow.
You will find a common sense approach to horsemanship, with an industry professional with 25 years experience in the thoroughbred industry. You will also find access to world class veterinarians, literally 5 minutes drive from us.
See for yourself, with photos taken today around the farm. The water in some photos is from irrigation, as it's going to get hot next week!

New Zealand Thoroughbreds

A remarkable era in New Zealand thoroughbred breeding history has ended with the death of the champion stallion Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram).
The son of another great sire in Sir Tristram, Zabeel passed away peacefully overnight in the paddock he has occupied at Cambridge Stud since 1991.
An emotional Sir Patrick Hogan announced Zabeel’s passing and made the following statement.
“Cambridge Stud is sad to report that during the night Zabeel passed away peacefully in his paddock. The sire already of 44 Group One champions, Zabeel was 29 years old.
“He was a sire who excelled at the very highest level and was able to carry on where his own great sire Sir Tristram had left off.
“Zabeel contributed to the thoroughbred industry and excelled above all expectations and having enjoyed his retirement for the past few years he will be sadly missed by all here at Cambridge Stud.
“He will be buried alongside his sire Sir Tristram in the very same tradition, with his tail facing the sunrise and his head facing the sunset.
“Zabeel gave so many people though his progeny the greatest thrill of winning so many races at the highest level. He surpassed all stallions that have come before him, past and present in New Zealand. Four Cox Plates and three Melbourne Cups – what more can you say?
“So a big thankyou from us all and God bless, rest in peace.”
