❓Can PEMF go through the hoof?
❓Can it help hoof issues?
❓Does it matter if the horse is shod?

The hoof is made up of cells, so yes PEMF does help hoof conditions, and yes! The Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field does get right through the hoof.

It will also go through casts/dressings/boots etc, and metal shoes are not an issue.

Increasing blood flow to an area is essential for healing and hoof growth. It also assists protein synthesis - which are essential for cell function, i.e, new tissue growth.

Decreasing pain and inflammation provides relief from inflammatory conditions such as laminitis, bruising etc. And the effect on abscesses is to speed up the drawing out process and recovery afterwards.

Bone healing has been shown to increase with the application of PEMF - it is FDA approved for non-union fractures, and utilised by NASA to prevent bone degeneration in the absence of the earth’s magnetic field.

Using PEMF therapy for the management of progressive, degenerative and inflammatory conditions, and to help reduce pain and inflammation has been very beneficial. Every horse responds differently but there are a lot of great success stories out there.

As well as PEMF, diet and nutrition should be addressed and environmental factors need to be taken into consideration as well. There are also other treatment options your vet may prescribe and other modalities that can be utilised in conjunction with PEMF therapy.

Horses wont improve on their own - putting them out on spell won’t actually “fix” them.
Keep up with their maintenance even when they are on holidays!

🐴 Let’s talk about the poll🐴

The poll consists of the atlas and axis vertebrae and the associated soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, and fascia. This region is responsible for the horse’s ability to flex and extend its neck, allowing for a wide range of movements. The health of the poll is crucial as it connects the head to the rest of the body, making it a central point for balance and coordination.

The way a horse carries its head can significantly affect its biomechanics. A horse with a relaxed, low head carriage is more likely to move freely and effectively engage its hindquarters, while a horse with its head held high may experience tension and restrict movement.

The poll area is rich in nerves and plays a significant role in proprioception—the horse’s awareness of its body position. Tension in this area can disrupt the horse’s ability to sense its own movements, leading to misalignments and potential injury.

A horse with a tight or restricted poll may display irregularities in gait, such as uneven strides or stumbling. This can lead to compensatory patterns in the rest of the body, which over time can cause chronic pain or musculoskeletal issues.

As horse owners and caretakers, it’s essential to be aware of signs that may indicate issues with the poll:
- Difficulty flexing or bending the neck
- Resistance to bridle pressure
- Changes in performance or movement
- Stiffness or reluctance to engage in work
- Excessive yawning or head shaking

Equine bodywork, including techniques like massage, myofascial release, and craniosacral therapy, can be incredibly beneficial for addressing poll-related issues. Share your experiences with your horse’s biomechanics in the comments below!

Have you noticed any changes in your horse’s performance related to their poll? Let’s start a conversation! 📸
