Batteries are an expensive and inefficient energy storage method. It's one of the reasons so called "renewables" are not going to drive energy costs down.

Whilst the world and media is focused on the fires in LA that have claimed 5 lives to date, meanwhile you hear very little about the earthquake in Tibet that has claimed 126 lives with thousands more missing and displaced. We should be focusing on all victims of natural disasters, not just the ones who have lost multi million dollar homes.

The earthquake, which has killed at least 126 people, is one of China's deadliest in recent years.

This is very welcome news for Katherine as we have been suffering from increased crime and lack of police able to respond. Well overdue but better late than never.

The Northern Territory Police Force has sought assistance from South Australia Police, who are one of our cross-border partners.

NT Police Commissioner Michael Murphy made the request of SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens for assistance.

The deployment was requested to continue an increased police presence in Alice Springs and transition NT Officers out of Central Australia and back to the Top End, particularly in Katherine for Operation Oxley.

Oxley will see an increased, highly visible police presence and the creation of the Fugitive Taskforce to target high harm and high-risk offenders.

Ten SA Police officers will be sent for the first eight-day rotation and they are expected to leave Adelaide on Monday 6 January and be sworn in as officers of the Northern Territory Police Force. It is expected the deployment will end in early February.

Each South Australian officer will be partnered with an NT police officer, and be utilised for patrolling high risk locations, licensed premises and engaging with unaccompanied youth.

The officers have received full cultural awareness training, with South Australian Police having assisted Alice Springs in a similar capacity in April 2024.

Commissioner Michael Murphy said, “I have made the decision to draw our members back to their various locations to ensure policing operations are continued throughout the Top End.

“The assistance of South Australian Police will ease this process and ensure the good work we have seen in Alice Springs over the past few months is continued.

“I thank the SA Police Commissioner, Grant Stevens, and the entire South Australian Police who, without hesitation, agreed to help the Northern Territory during a period of incredibly high police demand.”

I have concerns that the Federal Government advice following the recent incident of poisonings in Fiji, could instill a false sense of security in travelers.
"The Australian government issued a travel update warning people to “be alert to the potential risks around drink spiking and methanol poisoning through consuming alcoholic drinks in Fiji”, adding: “Get urgent medical help if you suspect drink spiking.”"
This suggests that people just need to protect themselves against having their drinks spiked.
The deaths in Laos and this latest incident are suspected methanol poisoning. This doesn't occur due to drink spiking, it occurs when illegally distilled spirits are used or, more frighteningly, when locally produced spirits from Government run or licensed distilleries have poor production or quality control.
Even drinking spirits or cocktails from an upmarket resort or bar can pose a risk if they use locally produced spirits, particularly in developing countries.

Anywhere and Everywhere needs to also include Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.
Road safety is important too but so is community safety, if the police are not currently resourced to do both then help must be sought.
One of my constant criticisms of the former NT Labor Government was their refusal to call in the Federal Government for assistance with policing when our resources were stretched. I hope this Government doesn't exhibit the same bloody-mindedness. Asking for help when you need it is not an admission of failure.

Australia's second largest hotel chain, Australian Venue Co, has announced that it will not celebrate or even acknowledge Australia Day in any of its' venues.
People in Darwin can show how they feel about this by spending their money in other venues. Boycott Shenannigans Darwin and Monsoons Restaurant and Party Bar if you want to show your disgust at this decision.

The NTG has had the capacity to revoke the lease of the Darwin Port for many years now, due to Landbridge not fulfilling its' obligations under the lease term. Labor was unwilling to exercise this right, let's hope the CLP will have the fortitude Labor lacked.
