Tom Curtain's Katherine Outback Experience show combines authentic horse-starting and working dog demonstrations, live music, horse riding trickery and humorous bush tales. We provide a unique window into life on the land, showcasing and celebrating the Australian Outback. We are based in Katherine, Northern Territory from April to the end of October. Tom Curtain began his horse training and music career in the Northern Territory in 2001, working first in the stock camp at Heytesbury Beef’s Mt Sanford Station. Here he worked with the station's horse breaker and musician Martin Oakes, who recognised Tom’s passion for all things musical and encouraged him to pick up a guitar and start writing songs about his experience in the Territory. This humble beginning led to the release of the award winning album ‘Smack Bang!’, the title song which stayed at the top of the Australian Country Music Charts for several weeks. During this time Tom decided to go out on his own, doing contract horse breaking throughout the Territory in order to continue his love of working with horses and the pastoral industry while still being able to continue his song writing and singing. In 2005 Tom moved to Kingaroy, Queensland to further his music career and establish a horse training business on his property. After touring extensively throughout Australia with Sara Storer, the Sunny Cowgirls and other leading Australian Country Music Artists and releasing his second album ‘Heatwave’, Tom decided to focus on building his horse training business with his young family. It was only a matter of time before the Northern Territory lured him back to Katherine, where he continues to train horses with Riverboyne Horse Breaking and Training. Being a tourist mecca during the dry season, Katherine provided the perfect platform to showcase station life by sharing Tom's extensive knowledge of the pastoral industry and training horses and dogs with his love for performing live music. Since its launch in July 2013, Katherine Outback Experience has grown from strength to strength and is now one of the highest rated experiences in the Top End - described by guests as a must do! If this wasn't enough, Tom's latest album 'Territory Time' debuted at No. 1 on the Australian iTunes Country Music Chart. The single Never Never Land', a duet with Luke O'shea, went on to win two Golden Guitars at the 2018 Tamworth Country Music Awards, before Tom took our 2018 Australian Independent Country Music Artist of the Year, Male Vocalist, Album and Single of the Year. Kathrine Outback Experience also won Tourism NT's 2018 Best Tourist Attraction and Best Visitor Experience Awards before being awarded bronze at the National Tourism Awards.

Crossing the Nullarbor with these 2 ratbags! Harry and Lottie have actually really enjoyed the travelling. We’ve found the more we talk and discuss the different topics travelling through the regions the more they respond and become extremely interested in the subject matter. Harry is very mechanically minded and is always looking for tractors, harvesters or road work machines and Lottie is more into the animals and music. She calls out all the different types of cattle and sheep as we pass them and if she doesn’t know them, she makes up a name for them!😂 She wanted to ride the whale like her horse pumpkin, as we pulled up for five.

We stayed at Mundrabilla Station on the Nullarbor Plain and caught up with Ben Campbell, with an interesting story on a million acres!

We were coming through Marrabel SA the other day and were waved down by Bill Rowett as he knew we were out of hay and wanted to stock us up with hay for the horses. We went back to his farm and met his son Nathan and mate Rob. We loaded on 30 bales of lucerne and went to pay, but they wouldn’t let us and said it was their way of saying thanks for travelling to remote communities around the country. Bill had just finished telling me it was their worst drought in his lifetime and he still wouldn’t take the money. We ended up telling them that we will repay them in other ways down the track but thanked them profusely. So a massive thanks to Rowett Farms from Marrabel and the story about the bucking horse “Curio” and Marrabel rodeo, it was a very humbling experience!

Last night was the Brolga Northern Territory Tourism Awards in Alice Springs. We were fortunate to take home the Tourist Attraction award and the Chairman’s Award. 🏆 🏆

Unfortunately due to commitments on the road with Tom Curtain’s national Good Life Tour which includes shows all weekend plus EQUITANA Australia in Melbourne all next week, neither Tom or Annabel could make it back to Alice. Lucky for us, great mate Den Cheal represented the team and did us all very proud.

As always, there’s a number of people behind the scenes to thank for their support including (but not limited to):
- our amazing team both on the ground and remote
- Sallie Gregory and the team from Top End Marketing Co.
- Tourism Tribe who have been amazing support in the digital space and more
- to the RTOs Tourism Top End, Visit Katherine, Tourism Central Aus and even Kununurra Visitor Centre just over the border who work tirelessly promoting tourism businesses and regions
- Tourism NT and Tourism Australia for their ongoing support and work
- most importantly everyone who has visited us and/ or recommended us. Word of mouth remains the greatest way people learn about our attraction in Katherine.

Congratulations to all other winners, with an extra special mention of fellow Katherine operators Nitmiluk Tours/ Cicada Lodge and Gorge View Bush Retreat Katherine as well as Tourism Top End!

A special thank you to Den for making the trip down to Alice on our behalf, we cannot wait to have you back on the road with us all in the coming weeks!

We love sharing a glimpse of what life on outback cattle stations is all about through real horse training and working dog demonstrations. We are so pleased it resonates with our amazing guests and industry.
