This little love had the fight of her life at 6 months of age. After having her airway obstructed on wednesay, she was rushed into us in a bad way and needed intensive care. She stayed the night with one of our nurses but her prognosis was not good and we expected the worst. Caramel beat the odds though and improved overnight and once she started searching for food, we knew she would make it! It has been a pleasure to look after her and its so rewarding to see her able to go back home to her family.... her sister really missed her! ❀️🐢

It's that time of year again when we start to feel the winter chill roll in. Our pets feel the cold too and the elderly are especially vulnerable. Some pet owners may notice their pets moving more stiffly or seem awkward to stand up or lay down. These are signs of arthritis which can be exacerbated in the cold weather, Give us a call if you are concerned and we can help you get your pet feeling more comfortable.
Also ensure that pets have access to warmth at night and put their coats on.... Or you may have to share that electric blanket! πŸ₯Ά

There are currently road works in Waratah st and Lurline rd which will stop our clients being able to park out the front of the clinic or down Waratah Ave. If you let the workman at the roundabout know that you need to come to the vet clinic, they should let you in.
You can also park along Lurline rd or Katoomba st and walk down, if you need a hand with your animal, give us a call and a nurse can come and help you.

Please ensure you have enough of your pets medication to see them through the Christmas break. Special compounding medications may take longer to arrive during this time of year. Its also helpful to call ahead if you need meds so the vet can make them up for you as this can sometimes take some time if the vets are very busy.

With the heat wave predicted over the weekend, now is a good time to prepare some water dishes for our wildlife. You can also leave a rock or branch in so small animals can get out of larger dishes of water.
πŸ”₯Also beware of walking your dogs in this heat. Its recommended to walk them in the early or later hours and not in the heat of the day.
πŸ”₯Walk on the concrete in bare feet, if its too hot for your feet, its probably too hot for your pets to walk on for any prolonged time.

Help our wildlife beat the heat! πŸ’š

Please help us spread awareness about a few things you can do to help our wildlife during a heatwave.

Christmas is only 25 days away! Don't forget that summer hazards like paralysis ticks and snake bites are also in higher numbers during this time of year as we have already seen. Keep your pets up to date with flea and tick control and be mindful of pets on bushwalks or in your yard.

This handsome devil is Fox 🐈 He lives in Medlow Bath and did himself a mischief by playing with a highlands copperhead 🐍 Its not very often we see where animals have been bitten by snakes but Fox also had a swollen cheek which suggests he was bitten on the face.
After fast action from his dad, Fox recieved treatment before he started deteriorating and he is doing well is hospital. This is a good reminder to keep an eye out for pets outside and if they start to show sudden signs of illness, seek help sooner rather than later. We have had an increase in snake bites just in the past week.

It seems a good idea to repost this now we hearing about snakes that are out and about enjoying this heat.

'Tis the season for snakes!

Even with all the rain, the weather is warming up- which means perfect ssssssnake time. Katoomba Vets has already had multiple cases of snake envenomation come in to be treated.

Signs of snake envenomation can vary, dependant on the snake. Common signs include:
- Vomiting
- Salivating
- Wobbly gate
- Uncontrolled urinating and defaecting
- Changes in vocalisation
- Paralysis
- A minor decline in health, followed by recovery, followed by a decline in health

Signs can vary from pet to pet, and species to species. If ever unsure, it is always best to contact your local vet.

So what can be done to reduce the chances of a snake encounter?
- Keep your back yard mowed short
- Well stacked wood stacks
- Rubbish kept to a minimum
- If you have birds, snake proof their enclosure
- Chickens should have a treadle style feeder to reduce rats and mice
- Avoid long grassy areas on walks
- Be aware at water holes

What to do if you think an envenomation has occurred:
- Remain calm (this will help not just you, but your pet also!)
- Restrain your pet to minimise movement
- Contact your vet ASAP

While snake identification can be helpful, it is not necessary for veterinary treatment.

*Please note that it is illegal to remove, harm, or kill a snake.*

If you require a snake to be removed, please call:
- Katoomba police (02) 4782 8199
- Katoomba Fire and Rescue (02) 4784 8343

This poor little guy was bought into us after a couple found him on the road unable to fly. Initially thought to be hit by a car, an xray revealed he was actually shot by a air rifle πŸ˜’ Dr. Lucy removed the pellet and he has a fractured wing but he will be headed to a WIRES carer to heal and will be released when he is ready.
❌ ️It is an offence under the National Parks and Wildlife act to harm native animals and penalties include a fine and jail time.
