Since moving to the South Coast, I have developed a bigger sense of appreciation for this beautiful land we are able to call home. As a first-generation Australian, fortune must have been shining on future me when my parents individually both made it to Australia. Knowing where you came from, generational history is important, even when it is difficult to hear. Many visitors who visit may not know but the coast is steeped in Indigenous Australian history. Town names including Kiama, Bombo, Gerringong, Nowra, Minnamurra and many more, are local Aboriginal names. Close by, in Minnamurra in October 1818 there was as an Aboriginal massacre by white settlers who killed at least six Aboriginal people. More than 150 massacre sites have been identified in NSW alone by Professor Lyndall Ryan from the University of Newcastle. Imagine, and most of us don’t know about them. It is important to acknowledge the past although it might not be directly ours. I look out from my balcony with a beautiful view and acknowledge that I live on the lands of the Dharawal people, the Traditional Custodians of this area and pay my respects to their Elders past and present and their connection to land, sea and community. I extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
