Sassie-Bell went home today & she’s most pleased with herself! She tangled with this giant Brown Snake on Sunday. After 4 vials (or more than 10,000 units) of anti-venom and a plasma transfusion later she finally began to clot her blood again.

The unusual thing about Sassie was that she did not show many of the neurotoxic signs commonly associated with brown snake bites. Hers were almost all to do with the coagulopathy effects of the bite (she bled profusely from a bite site to the ear).

We asked her owners to bring this monster in to ID properly using a scale counting key to ensure we had correctly identified it and treated Sassie with the correct anti-venom.
Turns out we had, just this monster must have injected a lot of venom! (Please note the snake was killed by Sassie and was frozen)

It’s wet wet wet! 🌧️🌧️
Remember to check your livestock for signs of foot rot in these boggy times.
Whilst many of us cant do much to get our cattle out of the mud there are several things that can be done to help and treat foot rot when it does occur.
Management:
1) if you have multiple paddocks - try to rotate stock through them to reduce bogging up and hopefully allow them to get slightly drier
2) ensure adequate nutrition: lots of rain means our grasses are often leached of nutrients. Supplying hay and supplementing with zinc, copper and selenium is often necessary.

Treatment:
If you notice lame livestock antibiotics and anti-inflammatories are often required to treat the infectious organisms that cause foot rot.
Sometimes a hoof examination and further treatment is required.

If you have any concerns don’t forget to give us a call for a visit.

Our Team gets to see some interesting cases! - Dr Simon and Dr Jayne have managed to get a published paper because of this very interesting case. Please have a read, it's not every day we see something like this.

Case of the week!

Stripey came in after it was noted he was not eating and loosing weight. On initial examination it was noted he had a fever, increased respiratory rate and dull lung sounds.
X-rays were performed and we found a pleural effusion in the chest. The lungs should be black, full of air and go all the way to the margins of the rib cage.
An ultrasound was performed and effusion confirmed. Some of the fluid was drained and we believe the culprit to be an infection from something like a migrating grass seed.
We hospitalised Stripey and monitored closely. Fortunately an in-dwelling chest drain did not need to be placed.
Stripey went home after several days - and we are pleased to report so far he is doing well!

Case of the Week!
Baxter came in after becoming unwell and stopping eating. On palpation it was noted that he had a mass in his abdomen. Radiographs revealed a large mass in the abdomen - exploratory laparotomy was performed.
The culprit an enlarged tortuous testicle that had become cancerous. Both testicles were retained in the abdomen (as this dog was obtained at 12 months old it was always just assumed he had been castrated but not tattooed).
Baxter will require 6 monthly metastases check ups ongoing to ensure the cancer does not spread.
Baxter has bounced back and is once again eating and happy!

Case of the Week!
Jazz came in on Monday with a partially severed tongue.
After an anaesthetic was performed we were able to better assess the degree of damage to the tongue.
It was discovered that about 1/3 of the tongue from midway to the tip had been partially torn off. We cauterised the remaining section attaching the torn piece as it had lost blood supply and was not viable to reattach.
The rest of the mouth and tongue was examined and no further significant wounds found.
However the likely culprit given the shape of a bite wound under the tongue was discovered - a lizard (water dragon or bearded dragon would be high on the list of suspects)!
Luckily for Jazz she should make a good recovery and not have too much issue with eating and drinking in future.
