🦠🦠 CANINE PARVOVIRUS 🦠🦠
We have been seeing a number of positive parvovirus cases in the last couple of weeks. It is very important to know that it is currently present within our communities and begin to take measures to prevent an infection in your dog.
Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that affects unvaccinated and partially vaccinated dogs.
Symptoms include lethargy, depression, and loss or lack of appetite, followed by a sudden onset of high fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Treatment is an option, but remember, prevention is key! It's always better to avoid problems before they happen. Plus, it's much cheaper in the long run.
So let's stay proactive and keep our pets healthy and happy! 🐾
Ho. Ho. Ho. Merry Woofmas!

Warning some people may find the videos confronting!!
We recently had Beebo in for sudden onset seizures. After several days in hospital for treatment Beebo was well enough to go home and continues to improve week by week.
His seizures were thought to have been caused by a mycotoxin.
Tremorgenic mycotoxins are metabolites from fungi that cause neurotoxicosis in dogs and are most commonly found growing in compost piles and mouldy food (meat, cereals, nuts, eggs, cheese, pasta).
The most common clinical sings seen with tremorgenic mycotoxins are;
- muscle tremmors (twitching)
- seizures
- ataxia (uncoordinated gait)
- vomiting/diarrhoea
- hyperaesthesia (increased reactions to stimuli)
- nystagmus (rapid eye movements)
- hyperthermia (fever)
In many cases diagnosis is presumptive, based on the presenting clinical signs and history of access to compost, mouldy food, and eating things they shouldn’t.
Treatment consists of decontamination and managing the effects of the toxin. In this case Beebo presented with seizures, vomiting, and hyperthermia. There was a history of possible access to the chook pen that may have contained some mouldy foodstuffs. He was given anticonvulsants to manage his seizures and tremors, and IV fluid therapy to help flush the toxin through, reduce his temperature, correct electrolyte imbalances, and support the kidneys.
The final video is an at home recheck of Beebo the following week. The ataxia can resolve in days, but there are recorded cases of it lasting for months.
