⚠️ Paralysis Tick Alert ⚠️

In the past couple of weeks, we've seen a sharp increase in cases of tick paralysis at our clinic - these parasites are on the rise with the warmer, wet weather.

Tick paralysis is extremely dangerous and can lead to life-threatening complications in both dogs and cats. Treatment can cost anywhere from $1500 to $2500, depending on the severity. Prevention is simple, effective, and could save your pet’s life!

What can you do?
✅ It's more important than ever to ensure your pet’s tick prevention is up to date (call or pop in to chat if you're unsure). We have a range of safe, effective options for both cats 🐈 and dogs 🐕
✅ Regularly check your pets for ticks with daily tick searches
✅ Know the signs of tick paralysis: weakness, difficulty walking, changes in breathing, vomiting - act fast and contact us if you notice any of these symptoms.

Check out this adorable Pomeranian litter that visited us last week for their first vaccinations and microchipping! 🐾

Vaccinations are a crucial part of your puppy’s healthcare, fortifying their immune system against contagious and potentially fatal diseases.

Key Vaccinations: 💉
• C3: Protects against Canine Distemper, Canine Parvovirus, and Canine Hepatitis
• C5: Includes protection against all of the above, as well as Parainfluenza and Kennel Cough

**Recommended Vaccination Schedule:**
✅ 6-8 wks old: First vaccination (C3)
✅ 10-12 wks old: Second vaccination (C5)
✅ 14-16 wks old: Third vaccination (C5) - this 3rd shot is the critical period when maternal antibodies have diminished, requiring your puppy to develop their own immune response.

Annual booster vaccinations are necessary to maintain immunity and will be recommended based on your puppy’s specific needs and lifestyle.

**Worming Schedule:**
✅ Every 2 wks until 12 weeks of age.
✅ Monthly until 6 months of age.
✅ Every 3 months for life.

At each puppy consult we vaccinate, microchip and assess for any other health concerns and also ensure they are up to date on worming/flea/tick prevention. 🪱🛡️

🩸 Did you know that dogs can give and receive blood transfusions? 🩸

Yesterday, Wh**ey, one of our vet nurse's dogs stepped up to save the life of another furry friend in need.

Just like humans, dogs sometimes need blood transfusions to treat life-threatening conditions such as severe anemia, immune disorders, toxicities, and traumatic bleeding. Every donation helps us provide the best care possible for our patients. 🐾❤️

Donors can give blood every 3-6 months, with only a small amount collected each time. Generally, dogs can donate if they are between 1-7 years old, weigh more than 25kg & are up to date on vaccinations, worming etc.

As a thank you, each donor receives a $50 clinic credit! The donation process is quick, taking just 10-15 minutes, and we use light sedation to ensure our patients feel relaxed and comfortable in a hospital environment.

If you're interested in learning more about our blood donor program and how your pet can become a hero too, reach out to us or email [email protected].

We Are On The Search For Another Vet!!

With 1 of our vets moving on to pursue a residency, Killarney Vets is seeking a mixed animal veterinarian preferably with 1 year or greater experience to join our practice. Remuneration is above award, aligning with experience. We are also very happy with applications from new-grads with a passion for mixed-practice and a can-do attitude.
We recently built a new small animal clinic and have horse breeding facilities based at a separate site. We have all the latest equipment; from IDEXX in house lab, DR x-ray, high quality ultrasound, cattle pregnancy ultrasound, SmartFlow and ezyVet as our practice software. We are a very forward-thinking practice and offer a very high calibre of medical and surgical care to our patients and clients despite our small-town status. We are looking for a fellow veterinarian who is willing to offer our clients the same degree of veterinary care.
The clinic is a genuine mix of 50% small and 50% large animal. The small animal case load consists of general consultations, internal medicine, soft tissue surgery and orthopaedics. The large animal case load consists of mostly beef cattle with ambulatory work, pregnancy testing and bull testing , a small portion of dairy work, horse ambulatory work, internal medicine and on-site horse breeding. Killarney Vets services a wide area including into Northern NSW with a consulting room in Woodenbong. The clinic has been established for over 30 years and has deep community roots in the area.
Our opening hours are 8am-5pm Monday to Friday, 9-1pm Saturdays, with on call offered weeknights and weekends. We work hard during the day but our on-call load is very light with an average of 1 call out every 3rd night and minimal over the weekend. Our clinic workload is equivalent to 2.5 FTE vets and our roster is set for 1 in 3 weekends on call. You receive a generous number of RDO’s in a 3 week block to offset the weekends rostered on call.
Killarney is located 2.5 hours from Brisbane, 1.5-1.75 hrs from Gatton and 1.5 hours from Toowoomba. Therefore, we are well situated to refer cases as needed, and our clients are willing to refer most times. We also have access to a travelling specialist surgeon who we have utilised on many occasions for clients who do not necessarily wish to transport their pets to referral centres.
Our team of nurses are fun and always trying to offer our clients the best opportunities to have their animals looked after while also trying to ensure the vets are not over-worked. With the current veterinarian staffing crisis the whole industry is facing we are acutely aware of looking after our vets.

If this sounds like a job opportunity you would like to consider please don’t hesitate to contact us!

When Straining to urinate is not a UTI!

This pup presented to KVS with some trouble urinating. Upon checking the urine, struvite crystals were found on cytology.

Struvite stones form in the bladder of dogs, more commonly in females and small breeds. These stones often cause pain and urinary tract infections (UTIs), which increase urine pH and promote stone formation.

An ultrasound was used to check the contents of the urinary bladder, and a radiograph confirmed the suspicion of a urolith.

Treatment involved:
• Dietary Changes: Special diets can dissolve some stones.
• Surgery: Larger stones, such as this one here need to be surgically removed (cystotomy).

To prevent stones from coming back, it’s crucial to manage any infections. Special diets can also help by regulating minerals, keeping the urine pH balanced, and increasing urine volume to flush the bladder.

Proper treatment and diet management are essential to prevent uroliths in dogs from recurring.

🦷 **Pet Dental Health Awareness**🐾

Did you know that 85% of cats and dogs over 1 year of age are affected by dental disease?

Dental disease can lead to various issues, including bad breath, sore gums, loosening of teeth, and the risk of tooth root abscesses. Moreover, untreated dental problems can result in infections in the mouth and body, potentially affecting vital organs like the liver and kidneys.

Check out this incredible before-and-after photo of a dog's teeth after a scale, polish, and clean at our clinic. This dog also required an extraction of a fractured carnassial tooth with root decay.

Here are some practical tips to keep your pet's teeth and gums healthy:

🦷 1. Oral Hygiene: Incorporate oral hygiene products like Greenies, raw brisket bones, dental water additives or even dental diets into your pet's routine. Look for products with the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal, indicating they meet specific standards for reducing plaque and tartar. You can find a list of accepted products at https://vohc.org/accepted-products/.

🐶🐱 2. Brush regularly: The best way to prevent tartar buildup is by brushing their teeth regularly. Use a pet-specific toothbrush and toothpaste to keep their mouths fresh and clean (human toothpaste can be harmful for pets).

🩺3. Annual Dental Exams: Schedule annual dental exams with our veterinarians to catch any issues early or ask us during your pets next vaccination!

🧐 4. Signs of dental issues: Keep an eye out for signs such as bad breath, swollen gums, or difficulty eating.

Remember, dental health isn't just about fresh breath (although that's a nice bonus!). It's about preventing painful dental diseases and ensuring your pet's overall well-being.

🐄 Don’t Turn a Blind Eye to Pink Eye!

Pink Eye, or Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis, is a painful bacterial infection that affects cattle, potentially leading to permanent blindness. Commonly triggered by flies, dust, sunlight, and grassy material.

Moraxella bovis is the bacterium responsible for pinkeye - it produces a toxin that attacks the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye, resulting in inflammation and ulceration.
The infection is contagious and can be spread to other animals, most often by flies.

Symptoms can range from mild watery discharge to severe swelling and even eye rupture, resulting in vision loss. Early detection and treatment are vital for successful management.

Treatment typically involves a long-acting eye ointment. If you suspect Pink Eye in your herd, reach out to our clinic at 07 4664 1344 for prompt assistance. Your herd’s vision is our priority! 🐮👁️
