The Killarney Vets staff had a rude awakening this morning with 3 out of 4 dogs in nurse Kearna’s household being bitten by this rather large brown snake. 2 are very much worse off but the border collie is less affected. 🤞🏻we get all 3 through.
This is a timely reminder as the weather warms up to keep an eye out for snakes and any signs of snake bite in your pets. These include collapse, salivating, tremoring, vomiting, dilated pupils and seizures.

Spring is in the air! We have had a few mares in for scanning with 1 mare being sent off for a successful live cover.
Remember now is the time to start planning if you are thinking of breeding your mare this season. Some stallions stand for limited periods and extreme temperatures can affect mares cycles.
Killarney Vets offer a variety of packages to get your mare bred including set up for live cover, chilled AI and frozen AI.

Coming into spring, you may notice an increase in environmental allergies that can be affecting pets!

Dermatological health issues can be caused by many different factors, such as allergies, parasites, bacterial and fungal infections, metabolic issues, and immune disorders.

Did you know seasonal allergies can result in ongoing ear infections? In this video Royal Canin shows how the ESP test (ears, skin and paws test) can be used to see if a seasonal allergy could be affecting your dog.

We’ve been made aware of a recent scam email targeting pet owners.

These emails appear to come from Petchip & falsely claim your pet’s microchip registration has expired and often look very convincing, including your pet’s name, microchip number, and other personal details.

The Dog & Cat Management Board has confirmed there has been no data breach of the official Dogs and Cats Online database.
Genuine emails from them will never include this level of personal detail.

If you or someone you know receives one of these emails:
Do not click on any links or give out personal details.

🚨 We are already starting to see a rise in tick paralysis cases. Wetter weather and the approach of spring means ticks are becoming more active.

Dogs and cats: Ensure your pets are up to date with tick prevention. Daily tick checks are recommended whenever possible.

Calves: Young calves are particularly vulnerable to paralysis ticks due to their size and lack of previous exposure. Many herds calve when tick activity is at its peak, so it is essential to use tick/ectoparasite tags or pour-on products as part of your herd management.

Prevention is always better than treatment. Do not wait until you see symptoms!

Just a reminder that we're offering 20% OFF all equine dentals this month!

Horses’ teeth erupt continuously, leading to sharp points, overgrowths, and malocclusions that can cause pain & weightloss. Now is the perfect time, especially if your horse is gearing up for the breeding or competition season.

🐄 Rotating Cattle Drenches 🐂

Using the same drench active over and over can lead to drench resistance in worms, making treatments far less effective over time.

Resistance Management in Cattle:
• Rotate drench classes – rotate between different active ingredients, not just different brand names (avoid repeated use of the same active ingredient or chemical group)
• Use combination drenches (dual or triple active) to help delay resistance development
• Reserve pour-ons for strategic use or low-risk groups
• Oral drenches are ideal for high-risk animals, such as young stock or where resistance is a concern

Maximising Drench Effectiveness:
• Dose to the heaviest animal in the mob to avoid under-dosing
• Ensure oral drenches are properly administered (re-dose if it’s spat out)
• For pour-ons, make sure coats are clean and dry, avoid heavy rain after application, and prevent licking between animals
• Check expiry dates before use
• Shake or mix thoroughly if using combination/custom mixes
